Series-ending United States Mint products launched last week, including coins honoring Ronald and Nancy Reagan. They sold quickly despite their release on Friday, and ahead of Independence Day weekend.
2016 Nancy Reagan First Spouse Gold Coins logged 4-day sales of 2,220 with splits of 1,428 for the proof and 792 for the uncirculated.
Their starts are stronger than more recent issues, like the immediate prior pieces featuring Betty Ford and Pat Nixon. The Fords reached 3-day sales of 1,565 with the proof at 960 and uncirculated coin at 605. The Nixons posted 4-day sales of 1,845 coins with splits of 1,159 for the proof and 686 for the uncirculated.
Presidential $1 Coins for Ronald Reagan also launched at noon ET on Friday. Available options include rolls, bags and boxes of circulating-quality Reagan dollars struck in Philadelphia and Denver with mint marks of ‘P’ and ‘D’. A combined 2,776,750 coins sold in the first four days.
Earlier this year, the Ford dollars opened with 6-day sales of 2,751,325 coins and the Nixon dollars debuted with 5-day sales of 2,856,925 coins.
Lastly, the 2016-W Proof Platinum Eagle debuted one week ago and sold out in less than an hour. Its official sales tally is 9,810, which is 190 away from the originally allotted 10,000. The quick sellout is a second in a row for the series, and impressive given its higher mintage and $1,350 price. Last year’s coin had a lower mintage of 4,000, was priced at $1,200, and sold out in less than 10 minutes.
This year’s proof Platinum Eagle marks the end of a two-year design theme titled Torches of Liberty.
