Weekly top-sellers for the United States Mint include flagship products, rolls of Reagan dollars and the 2016 American $1 Coin & Currency Set.
Coin and currency sets are probably the biggest standout. Released on June 16, they rose 3,650 for their strongest advance since launching out of the gate with first-day sales of 21,149. Prior weekly increases since its release totaled:
- 1,693 for the week ended July 17;
- 1,499 for the week ended July 10;
- 1,771 for the week ended July 4; and
- 2,632 for the week ended June 26.
The U.S. Mint originally imposed an ordering limit of 5 sets per household. That was removed more than a week ago, and is one of the reasons for the heightened sales. Collectors have now ordered a total of 35,742 sets, or 47.7% of the maximum 75,000.

I am still surprised at the low sales of the 2016 American $1 Coin & Currency Sets at less than half of the mintage of 75,000 sets sold! These are beautiful, historic sets with low serial number notes.
With platinum up $44 today, the Mint still has 713 unsold 2016-W Proof American Eagle Platinum $100 coins left in their Memphis fulfillment warehouse currently priced at $1450 each but “unavailable” ! A lot of money just gathering dust!
Happy collecting everyone!

I do read these posts but seldom write .Anything I write is nothing but my opinion.My take is our mint has been and continues to be stuck in a rut lacks energy boring and predictable.Collectors are bored to tears.This offering is inexpensive but has no future.Thousands of people have dresser drawers and boxes full of this junk.Had the mint been a private operation it would have been gone decades ago.Privatize the collectors Division.
With the low sales of the 2016 American $1 Coin & Currency and last year’s set never really sold out it should tell the Mint to… LOWER THE MINTAGES! That way maybe some people will not feel like all they have is just junk!
Junk? The $1 Enhanced Uncirculated coin exclusive to this set graded PCGS SP-70 sells for about $225 from reputable dealers.. I don’t call that junk. This is only the third Native American $1 coin in this special finish & a beautiful presentation folder all for just $14.95. & the $1 banknotes with low serial numbers with 2 digits sell for around $100 each. A great product at a low price.
I agree that the US Mint’s numismatic programs should be privatized.

I wonder how many get these set graded and how many will pay the price on the secondary market my guess would be few.i would like to see the numbers.Far too many minted.
Whatever the reason for so many TBD’s in the product schedule this late in the year, one thing you can count on with a late release is lower sales and a low mintage. That works for commemorative coins since the law allows sales only in the one year. Now there’s nothing stopping the mint from selling other coins from the previous year into the next year as well and they continue to do so. But maybe with the level of incompetence that’s prevalent at the mint these days they might just decide to chuck it all and start anew in… Read more »

The banknote I got with my American coin and currency set had 4 non-zero digits. There are only 90 2-digit banknotes and 12 banks giving only 1080 2-digit bank notes so if any of those were included in the set a few people were very lucky indeed.

You show a * by the 2016 proof platinum eagle indicating the coin is no longer available even though there was some activity albeit negative. Have you heard something, is this just a guess, or an error?

I agree about the TBD situation. Most of the special products for this year will all be issued in the last 4 months of the year causing chaos among collectors scrambling to budget for everything! Some may just say “No!” to certain items due to this mismanaged mess!
And, yes those few 2 digit notes are rare. I got one with 3 digits & the rest had 4 digits after the zeros.

I got that same US Mint email this morning August 1 at 10:04 am CT. But their website is not updated with this new information yet for some strange reason.
