The United States Mint is selling the highly anticipated 2016-W Standing Liberty Centennial 1/4 Ounce Gold Coin beginning at noon ET today, Sept. 8. The commemorative appears 100 years after the original Standing Liberty quarter debuted, and it is the second of three gold coins for this year to celebrate the 1916 renaissance in American coinage.
Unlike its century-old predecessor that was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, this newest collectible is composed in .9999 fine 24-karat gold. Its one-quarter ounce weight is symbolic of the coin’s denomination, as is its business strike.
Here’s a table comparing specifications between the original quarter and the new centennial quarter:

Second Release in 2016 Centennial Gold Coins
In April, the U.S. Mint released the first of the three centennial pieces, the gold Mercury dime. Priced at $205; limited to a mintage of 125,000 coins; and restricted to sales of 10 coins per household, it effectively sold out after 40 minutes.
The gold Standing Liberty quarter has a lower mintage of 100,000 but it has a smaller household ordering limit of one coin and it is priced higher at $485.
A 2016-W Walking Liberty Half-Dollar Gold Coin will debut later in the year, completing the centennial product series.
Ordering
Those interested in the gold Standing Liberty quarter can order one on release straight from the U.S. Mint’s website. The coin’s product page is right here. Place phone orders at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
Update (Sept. 9 at 10:19 a.m.): First-day sales of the Standing Liberty 2016 Centennial Gold Coin reached 47,884, the United States Mint announced.
Update (Sept. 13 at 5:02 p.m.): The U.S. Mint reported sales of 53,378 coins through Sunday, Sept. 11.
Thank you mint for the 1 per household. Had same problems as everyone else, but finally got one at 12 :12. I didn’t get the dime ,sold out to fast.
Update #2:
With two hours having passed and still not receiving a confirmation email, while clicking on ‘check order status’ returned a 404 error page – I ordered again. This time the confirmation email arrived a minute later.
Then I went back and – surprise – I was able to check order status and both orders went through. Now let’s see what happens when you exceed the household order limit…
Congrats to all who perservered and got your orders in.
-Mammoth
Mammoth got two (?) congrats! With that scenario I should have orders in for about 8. It was 24 minutes of ! stress ! before I received confirmation. How do dealers receive quantities for immediate resale?
Got through finally,, system also processed two for me, it timed out hit enter again both went through, called mint they told me one would automatically cancel, that they were aware of the doubling, hopefully all will go well
Anyone have any sales number updates from the mint?
Moneta – Dealers don’t have the coins in hand. They are doing “Pre-sales” on Ebay™ & their coin dealer websites. They don’t always say so, but it is a pre-sale as the Mint cannot release any coins for sale till Noon ET to anyone, not even the President! But you can pay for expedited S&H $20.95 & usually get items in stock the next morning by 10:30 am by UPS with adult signature required. I love this 1 coin per household (address) limit since it is fair to all & is driving the dealers & flippers crazy! LOL This coin… Read more »
Seth, I just check the mint website and they are still selling the Gold Standing Liberties mote than 31/2 hours later. It was not fun on the mint web site today. It took 20 minutes to get signed in and the coin in my bag and down to the step 4 of check out and then I got a pop up that said “wait” so I did and nothing ever happened. So I moved away from the IPad to my IPhone started all over found the mint using a different program format for the iPhone but was able to order… Read more »
They may be offered at $1400, but the bid is closer $600 and falling.
Update #3:
Three HOURS after my first order went through, the confirmation email finally arrived. Subtracting the second order number from the first gives a figure of 21,100 for the 2-hr. duration between 12:30 and 2:30 EST, so if you assume 50,000 of these coins sold in the first half-hour and 71,100 by 2:30 – it is likely the 100,000 coins did not sell out today. We’ll see I guess.
bilelle – Glad you got your gold quarter after all that computer tech mess! We have to be more creative these days with a backup plan since the “old” pre-internet days (actually the Mint didn’t even have a website in the early 90s when the www started!) They didn’t even have a phone number until late 80s.! They actually did numerous television ads when they got a toll-free phone number & took orders by mail & later by phone too ! LOL Now, the only way to order (they stopped mail orders last year) is with web access & a… Read more »
I had the same thing happen with the doubling. We will see if they ship both. I had a 6 min difference in order time between the first order confirm on the two orders, and a 1 hr difference between the second order confirm. My order numbers were 11k apart. I’m also surprised they didn’t sell out. The Platinum Liberty sold out in about an hour with a limit of 1 per household (10k mintage, but obviously much more expensive), figured this would go in a max of 3 hours, very surprised to see them still available. I don’t particularly… Read more »
6 1/2 hours later (6:30PM EST) and they are still available.
I got my order in at approximately 12:20PM EST..
I wasn’t in a big rush this time; I had a feeling they would still be available for at least three hours.
It’s great to see that the limit allowed me to buy a coin for my collection without having to hand over a large premium to a flipper. At least when you buy a flipped house you get a highly overpriced paint job and maybe a new carpet.
I can’t believe how some of these flippers charge. Just for fun, I offered a flipper his $995 asking price but said he needed to waive the shipping charge. The flipper countered with $1000 and no shipping cost. I couldn’t believe it.
Thursday September 8, 2016 @ 4 PM PDT, all 100,000 U.S. Mint 2016-W Gold Standing Liberty Quarters have not sold out after 7 hours. On ebay today, they have resold from $595 up to $650. The highest price paid so far was $797 for ebay item #271391234465 sold on April 19, 2016 @ 9:06 PM.
If anyone wants one now, you shouldn’t have any issues at all.
Just for the heck of it, I attempted to buy a second one and it was smooth and uninterrupted.
The limit of 1 per household really makes it hard for me to get 1 for each of my children as an heirloom. I had to convince 3 other people to get online and use their credit cards to buy today. They were all going nuts and calling me because they had never experienced the terrible ordering process with any other e-commerce website. I attempted to warn them that it is a pain in the _ss.
These look great. I ordered one today to sit next to my mercury dime. One thing I wish they would have done is match the size of the originals, not the weight. It would have made for an odd and pricier gold weight, but nicer to have a collection of the original and new versions with the same size side-by-side. 2021 peace dollar anyone?
With a price of $485 & a limit one most collecter got theirs. Filping only works. When you have a buyer!!! Most buyer who flip pay a little, to the first buyer plus the price of the coin and s%h. $485 reduces the number of buyers.
Status updated from processing to shipped. I thought this would sell out inside of 3 hours but mint is still taking orders. Rough go at the start but anyone wanting this should have no problems getting one.
I think anyone who received more than one confirmation using the same Credit Card stands a pretty good chance of NOT GETTING ANY OF THESE COINS. The Mint attempts to check CC#’s for duplicate use and I think they may not ship any coins that fall into this category. Mark, I can relate to you and your friends experience. My wife had heard me grouse about the mints “Tech Torture Time” on several occasions. She just heard me talk about the WACKY SYSTEM. I told her how my screen rolled like a slot machine and rolled her eyes. Today she… Read more »
Luckily it looks like everyone who wanted one got one. The dealers will be stuck with these thinking there would be another less than an hour sellout. MCM In Sarasota, Florida has been hawking them by email since after noon for $599 for PCGS SP-69 & $749 for NGC SP-70. I hope their naive customers know they are still available directly from the Mint still!

I tried to get one right at sale time but had problems right from the start. I expected that so I kept my cool and got off line. I got back on and the same but I stayed on and just stayed with it. Finally got my one.
Gathering and comparing order numbers from various blog sites has provided enough information to established that 1/2 of total SLQ mintage has been sold.
As of this morning (Sept. 7, 2016) “Still Available.”
Yes, the long availability is a pleasant surprise. Guess the dealers and flippers had trouble getting other people to buy coins for them. And, with the household limit of one, they had a difficult time finding others with extra coins to sell to them. I ordered immediately at noon and had some issues, but all went well in the end, and I got the confirmation. The main problem I had is that I selected the expedited shipping and it came up with the standard shipping ($4.95) and I could not change it even while ordering. No problem, though. I’ll just… Read more »
I duplicated my order by accident with the system timing out, called mint this morning, they placed one of my orders on hold (the second one) and show the other as shipped, so if by chance you ordered two accidentally you should receive just fine according the lady I spoke to at the mint, not bad service ordered on Thursday at 12:30 shipped by next morning, now if only a way to keep the poachers from buying all of the short supply coins so the collectors could really get them
That is better than mine. I finished at 12:02 and it still hasn’t shipped.
UPS delivery expected on 9/13. Agreed will be a nice looking set of three when all is said and done.
The U.S. Mint announced first day sales of 47,884 coins, for 47.9% of the allotted 100,000.
Wow, if only 47.9% of the allotment sold the first day, could it be that this coin will not sell out? If sales remain slow, I’ll be the mint opens up the household limit. That would be fine as far as I’m concerned. The one-per-household limit really worked for collectors, and the mint listened to us. If you don’t order the coin during the first couple days, so be it if it sells out. I’ll bet the walking half has a household limit of 2 to 5, but it would not surprise me if it is 10 like the dime.
I agree. I think it would be nice for the mint to do 1 per household limits for the first day and then open it up to the larger numbers after that. I know some only want graded 70’s, and I’m sure they will be paying quite a bit for them due to their decreased availability.
My order was shipped today at 9:26.
My coin won’t ship until next week because I got stuck with the standard shipping. This is usually what happens when you select standard shipping, but I was unable to select anything but the standard shipping. One of the problems with the ordering process. I’m not concerned, though, as I got the confirmation and I’m not in any hurry.
For those who want to sell there quarter, http://us12.campaign-archive2.com/?u=8b5087851323dfe36b780baf8&id=26a09aa971. I’m doing it and then i will buy the coin again when the mint opens up sales, or I will buy a sp70 for $550 in 4 months.
Wow! I think the sales numbers only reflects that collectors are a much smaller group, than imagined. Most investors in gold or silver would just buy bullion and forget about the high premium of this coin. If they had open up the limit per household, then fewer collectors would have been able to acquire them and they would have already been sold out, yesterday. Oh well, its great that all those who wanted one, got it. I think those coins, like the Kennedy’s are going to sit for a while. My guess is that this was a flop for flippers… Read more »
Wow, I stand corrected! Even though I have standard delivery, the Mint shipped my coin this morning and I will have it on Tuesday. Better than I expected! Could it be that the Mint is improving??
Interesting data concerning sales total for day one, thank you:
“Update (Sept. 9 at 10:19 a.m): First-day sales of the Standing Liberty 2016 Centennial Gold Coin reached 47,884, the United States Mint announced”
On ebay this morning Friday September 9, 2016 @ 10:34 AM, some buyer actually paid an astonishing $799.99 for a 2016-W Standing Liberty Centennial Gold Quarter as item #152234762739. This is the highest price paid for that coin ungraded. The irony is that the gold coin can still be ordered directly from the U.S. Mint for $485 + $4.95 shipping.
This one sold for $495.00. After Ebay and PayPal fees…..
Why?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-Gold-Standing-Liberty-Quarter-CONFIRMED-ORDER-/182273439456?hash=item2a7057f6e0%3Ag%3A0VsAAOSwGtRX0ZDD&nma=true&si=XpMKZODhQJnSCTsGJgwuylG8IBA%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Christopher: It seems ridiculous that any one would sell on Ebay for $495.00.
After paying the fees they have LOST money!
When selling on Ebay with an action, you have to be careful. When I sell through an auction, my starting price is the minimum I will accept after fees and shipping. The seller has little activity, so likely a rookie mistake.
Just placed order for 2016 SQL today (9/9) about 330p EST USM04460xxx.
In case someone wants to update 2nd day sales estimate.
So how do people in multi-family housing or apartments with the same address buy these if there is one per address?
Tim: I have to assume that apartment numbers since they are part of the address will distinguish each different customer. As far as multi-families living at the exact same address, I don’t know how that would work.
On ebay August 11, 2016 @ 02:32 AM, some buyer actually paid an outrageous Buy It Now price of $875 for a 2016-W Standing Liberty Centennial Gold Quarter as presale item #122079577919. This was the highest paid for such a raw coin.
OK, a new perspective on the PRICE of US Mint issues. Visit the Royal mint to see a 1/4 oz. Britannia & Lion, 2016 with a mintage only 730 pieces! Price 425 Pounds! I’m sorta feeling cheated now. Hope this link works:

Jerry In Jersey,
Exactly.
Ya, 730 vs 100,000.
No Ebay and TV flippers there scamming the public?
Hmm, where’s the US hype coming from causing frenzy
buying and elevated prices?
Pounds are more than dollars per unit but still ………..
I got 3 coming, one to my p.o. Box. One under my wife’s name to our home, and another to my mom’s address. So there are probably less collectors than the numbers show as I’m sure I’m not the only one getting multiples.
Ya there’s ways to get more than one. Probably none are
really cost effective on any large scale by flippers and dealers though.
Two’s the right limit in my mind. Kind of hard to gift one if you can
only get one.
Still not sold out.
magerlee
Hope u used credit cards with different billing addresses or they will cancel the duplicate address orders.
The Mint should be happy that magerlee ordered three. They won’t sell out until they raise the household limit
