I received my Gold Merc Dime yesterday and sent it back today. It was obviously one that had been previously sent back due to a rather large spot, discoloration in the field of the reverse. It would never be valued above gold spot which is fall below what I paid for it.
Ken – Most of the nearly 9,000 gold dimes sold last week were coin dealer returns since the limit on day one in April was 10 coins per household & they had 7 days from receipt in mail to return those coins they thought wouldn’t grade 70. The Mint resold them all (124,950 of the 125,000 mintage limit). Meaning that the Mint only considered 50 coins to have major damage. They admitted reselling the returned coins in a coinworld.com article. I have always said here that they do this regularly & now the Mint has publicly confirmed their deceptive practice!… Read more »
It was a disappointment to be stymied trying to order a gold Mercury Dime. When the online order would not go through despite repeated attempts, I called the US Mint and was told that since I’d bought two of them earlier this year, they would not sell me any from this batch.
A public notice from the Mint beforehand, would have been most appreciated.

Deceptive? They can sell returned coins? Where does it say that the mint thinks these will grade at 70? I’m sure some people ordered them just for the beauty. They could have melted them, but there were enough posts from people that just wanted the opportunity to purchase one. The mint listened and sold them.
Johnny –
If you are ok with receiving other people’s returned coins due to problems like scratches etc. – go for it! But remember, a coin with a problem is always worth less.

Is off topic but I am new and respect your knowledge on this thread: please explain….When the production limit for uncirculated 5oz commems is 30,000 that they are selling out at 18,000? I feel lucky to have a brace of the Teddies
