Australian bullion sales ended mixed in December but sharply higher for 2016, figures from the Perth Mint show.
December sales of gold coins and gold bars at 63,420 ounces advanced 15.8% from November and surged 58.2% from the same month a year earlier.
Annual gold sales reached 520,295 ounces, posting gains of 14.2% from the 455,630 ounces sold in 2015 and 0.7% from the 516,709 ounces moved in 2014.
The Perth Mint sold 430,009 ounces in silver bullion last month, for the weakest total since June 2015. Still, and speaking to a strong year, it was only the 5th time in the last 16 months that sales finished below 1 million ounces. Until September 2015, the million monthly mark had not been seen since at least February 2013 when CoinNews started tracking Perth Mint data.
March 2016 was the Mint’s biggest month for silver bullion with more than 1.7 million ounces sold.
Annual silver sales at 12,236,766 ounces jumped 5.5% from the 11,595,504 ounces moved in 2015 and soared 61.7% from the 7,567,467 ounces delivered in 2014.
