Five new products from the United States Mint debut today, Mar. 2, with the release of 2017-W American Eagle Gold Proof Coins and a companion four-coin set.
The four coins are featured in 1 oz., 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz. and 1/10 oz. sizes with respective face values of $50, $25, $10 and $5. Found in the four-coin set is one of each size.
All American Gold Eagles bear the same basic imagery with a collector-grade proof quality finish identified with frosted designs and mirror-like fields. This varies from the associated investor-grade bullion coins which have otherwise similar specifications including a composition of 22-karat gold.
Pricing and Specifications
Initial pricing for the coins and set is shown in the chart further below, and are the same as when last year’s issues debuted. They are based, in part, on a weekly average of LBMA gold prices that is within $1,200.00 and $1,249.99 an ounce.

American Gold Eagle Designs
Since their introduction in 1986, Gold Eagles have carried the same obverse (heads side) design showcasing Saint-Gaudens’ image of Liberty. The design first appeared on the 1907 $20 Double Eagle and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful ever to grace a coin from the United States.
50 stars surround Liberty along with the inscriptions of LIBERTY and 2016. A ‘W’ mint mark indicates the coin was produced at the U.S. Mint’s facility in West Point.
The reverse (tails side) depicts a family of eagles with the design by Miley Frances Busiek. Inscribed above is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. Below we find the coin’s precious metal weight and legal tender face value.
