Precious metals futures closed Tuesday in opposite directions from the previous day — gold, silver and platinum climbed while palladium fell. Gold’s gain was its fourth in five sessions.
Gold for August delivery edged up 50 cents, or 0.04%, to finish at $1,246.90 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Gold appears to be setting into a $1,240 to $1,260 trading range — more or less between its 50- and 200-day averages," MarketWatch quoted Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets. "It’s underlying bullish trend remains intact."
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,241.80 to a high of 1,253.80. They slipped 0.8% on Monday.
Elsewhere, silver for July delivery added 1.6 cents, or 0.1%, to settle at $16.588 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $16.49 and $16.67. They declined 0.5% in their start to the week on Monday.

July platinum gained $2.10, or 0.2%, to $918.70 an ounce, ranging from $915.80 to $924.40.
- Palladium for September delivery declined $5.60, or 0.7%, to $858.35 an ounce, trading between $857.15 and $867.20.
London Precious Metals Prices
In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Monday PM to Tuesday PM:
- Gold rose $4.30, or 0.4%, to $1,249.55 an ounce.
- Silver gained 13 cents, or 0.8%, to $16.66 an ounce.
LBMA platinum and palladium prices are available on the LBMA’s website with a delay of midnight.
