Demand increased last week for U.S. Mint collector products following two straight weeks in which they made rather lethargic sales gains.
Two new products supported stronger advances — the 2017-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle and the 2017 Ozark Riverways Quarters Riverways Three-Coin Set.
This year’s West Point Mint-struck uncirculated Silver Eagle launched last Thursday, June 29, for $44.95. It scored a four-day sales total of 111,224. The start is well slower than last year’s 30th anniversary edition and from the one in 2015 but quicker than those from years 2014 and 2013.
Sales of the past five issues opened at 134,925 (2016); 127,872 (2015); 106,349 (2014); 104,570 (2013); and 123,801 (2012). After not having been produced for two years, pent-up demand boosted buying of the 2011-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle. It debuted with early sales of 184,967.
Three-coin sets of Ozark Riverways quarters launched on Monday, June 26, for $9.95. The product includes an uncirculated quarter from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints and a proof quarter from the San Francisco Mint. The new set posted opening sales of 9,821, ranking in the middle against other series issues since 2016.
This year’s first two sets and last year’s five sets opened with sales of:
- 9,415 sets for Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in DC,
- 10,261 sets for the Fort Moultrie in South Carolina,
- 10,030 sets for the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota,
- 9,723 sets for Harpers Ferry National Historical Park of West Virginia,
- 9,638 sets for Cumberland Gap National Historical Park of Kentucky, and
- 10,086 sets for Shawnee National Forest of Illinois.

225th Anniversary Products are a complete bust.
2017 certainly has the look of very low sales on almost everything from the Mint. Perhaps the Mint’s menu has too many items on it. Though I don’t understand why they can’t show what’s coming out in the next 5 months? Perhaps some of us would pass on one item for something that’s available in November. Silly not to show the plan for the year.
The Mint wants collectors to focus only on what is available this month & next month & therefore refuses to release a product schedule beyond that short period. Very sad!

Mike Unser –
Due to low sales during the first four days, the Mint at around noon today lifted the 1 coin per household limit on the 2017-W Proof Platinum American Eagle $100 coin.

Thanks for the update Seth! Any idea on how low sales have been for the Pt coin? Gosh the price of Pd is getting close to Pt??? amazing.

And STILL no sell out! Just checked the Mint’s website ..sarcastic wow …. if you go by the “standard” of the 2015 proof APE with its totally artificially created mintage rarity (as compared to prior years’ sales) and 2016 (when probably folks jumped in thinking another rarity in the making.. NOT as it turns out … ) … this one is a dud … well the design is truly a dud … maybe they big boys buyers and flippers are waiting for the price to be adjusted down this Wednesday …
New motto for the mint: “The U.S. Mint, charging as much as we can squeeze & making poor decisions and ignoring customers with glee……. since 2015….”
I called the mint early this year and asked them if they were behind on the schedule. They said the schedule would come out each month showing what coins are available, I said well that sux. She acted startled I would say that, then silence for a minute. I then told her I am used to seeing the schedule for the whole year so I can plan ahead for it. She said I’m sorry and that was that!
The mint is in big trouble I think!!
