The Royal Canadian Mint unveils another innovative piece to its collection with the release of its 2017 $20 The Little Brown Bat 1 oz. Pure Silver Coin.
Limited to 7,000 coins, this collectible marks the second 99.99% pure silver coin from the Mint’s Nocturnal by Nature series with selective design elements in black rhodium plating. The first coin, featuring a barn owl, is at 90% of sales.
Designed by Canadian artist Calder Moore, the collector coin’s reverse or tails side depicts a little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) and an enlarged moon. The moon alone lacks rhodium plating, appearing to shine through a dark sky night.
"Tilt your coin to alter your perception of the plating’s hue, which varies from a dark black colour to a gun-metal grey, and adds to the contemporary look and feel of the overall design," describes the Royal Canadian Mint.
Above the bat and moon is CANADA. Below them are 20 DOLLARS and 2017. Moore’s initials of ‘CM’ appear under the bat’s left wing.
Coin obverses show Susanna Blunt’s effigy of the Queen in silver with a background of black rhodium plating.
Around the portrait — to the left and right — are inscriptions of ELIZABETH II and D G REGINA.
