Sales of the 20th anniversary 2017-W Proof American Platinum Eagle have officially ended. The United States Mint this week tagged the coin’s product page with "sold out."
The platinum coin launched on July 6 with over half of its 10,000 mintage claimed within hours. Sales reached about 9,200 by early August and that’s when the coin’s availability started rotating from on to off as the U.S. Mint reconciled orders and cancellations. Since then, several U.S. Mint weekly sales reports have adjusted its total lower. The most recent one brought it down 35 to 8,957 coins.
Last year’s proof Platinum Eagle also had a 10,000 mintage. It sold out within an hour of launching and has last reported sales of 9,151. The proof Platinum Eagle from 2015 had a smaller mintage of 4,000. It attained sell-out status in seven minutes and ended with sales of 3,881 coins.

The 2017-W Proof Platinum American Eagle $100 20th anniversary coin did not sell out of the 10,000 mintage. The Mint simply decided due to low demand that they would just melt the approximately 1,043 coins unsold or returned. They are embarrassed that during their 225th anniversary & the 20th anniversary of the Platinum American Eagle, that the old design used from the first Proof in 1997 (and on all bullion versions since 1997 when the platinum coin program began) was not popular & had low sales from the start. They expected a first day sellout like last year’s version that… Read more »
Odd it’s still 2017, yet the Au SLQ & W/Lib languish…..forever selling few units a week. Think IF the mint made a Pt PD proof set this year, want a sellout, ltd. to 1 per HH & like a 5k limit…wow, I digress, for the 225th Anniversary we get Father Flannigan looking @ a tree, should be a 420 plant now THAT wold sell somewhere!!
Thanks for the update Seth! 225th anniversary only comes around once..sad. did the CCAC pick the design? had such a special occasion and blew it. strange year for the mint. decreases in sales all over the place. Pt = Pd per oz? wow!!
NW Robert – You are so right about it being a crazy year for the Mint! The “crown jewel” of their 225th anniversary offerings this year, the 2017-W $100 Proof American Liberty high relief gold coin with rare raised edge lettering with a mintage limit of 100,000 coins has not even sold 25,000 coins in the months since its release! Palladium traded above platinum a few times during the day today, which is simply amazing for sure. And the Mint still doesn’t understand that most if its loyal customers want a household limit if 1 coin or set on limited… Read more »
the CCAC folks should put on aprons, heat resistant gloves and googles and be forced to melt all the Platinum coins that haven’t sold. Nice job CCAC. 🙁 PS The American liberty coin is awesome, 🙂
NW Robert – I ageee with you totally. The 2017 American Liberty gold coin (& silver medal) is beautiful ! And with low sales it may have some real numismatic value in the future, especially if the Mint stops selling them at the end of the year (although there is no law on this coin that says that they have to). I am glad I saved up to buy one on first day of issue. I budgeted more for coins & medals for this year since it’s the Mint’s 225th anniversary & at the beginning of the year we didn’t… Read more »
6.5 years without a full-time Mint Director is crazy. I didn’t know it was that long. I beginning to wonder if they will ever have one???
joera –
Hope you are doing better healthwise.
Obama will go down in history as the only president so far who didn’t get either of his nominees for Mint Director confirmed by the Senate (except President William Henry Harrison who died just 32 days after inauguration!). So Obama didn’t have his own handpicked Mint Director during his two terms in office. The Senate needs to get its act together & confirm a qualified person for this very important position. Maybe Trump can do it.
Happy collecting!

Per AP- Trump has nominated MIke Mishak for Mint director!
wow…….
Ooops that was in…The Onion!!! He’s too busy anyway……or not he say he has “A lot of time on his hands…” hey that’s our time……!
I am having fun Seth and have a lot to learn. I also purchased the American Liberty coin on day 1. I thought it would sell out! Beautiful coin. I also learned about grading coins a couple of months later. A lot different than than back in the 70’s. Not a first day release without getting it graded by day x by one of the 3rd party companies. I can’t imagine the mint melting 75,000 of those coins. I guess you and I would have one of the lowest minted releases! I agree we need to get President Trump to… Read more »
Chas Barber – Mike would be perfect for the job, just as long as he doesn’t get to put his own price on mint products. He knows coins & hes on top of it all, & he can run a business. I would hope the CACC could keep him honest. He would probably come up with some good ideas, one thing is for sure he can sell coins. Hey, hes a no brain,er, can’t be any worse especially after all the lost opportunity,s of what could & should have been over the last few years. o’ya no inside trading with… Read more »
