Early U.S. Mint sales figures are now available for products depicting Michigan’s Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. There is also an updated total for the Mint’s new $10 gold piece.
Released last week on Monday, Feb. 5, the Pictured Rocks quarter is the first of five 2018-dated issues. Available products include rolls and bags of quarters from Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco with mint marks of ‘P’, ‘D’ and ‘S’.
The amount sold through the first seven days reached a combined 1,835,280 quarters. Early sales for other recent quarter designs tallied to:
- 1,907,680 for the 2017 George Rogers Clark quarter (Indiana)
- 1,902,180 for the 2017 Ellis Island quarter (New Jersey)
- 1,887,900 for the 2017 Ozark Riverways quarter (Missouri)
- 2,009,180 for the 2017 Frederick Douglas quarter (DC)
- 1,890,460 for the 2017 Effigy Mounts quarter (Iowa)
Last Thursday, Feb. 8, the U.S. Mint released its more affordable $10 American Liberty gold coin. The 1/10-ounce gold piece clocked in with first-day sales of 9,842 coins. Another 4,453 coins sold over the weekend, lifting its total through four days to 14,295 coins. The coin was the U.S. Mint’s strongest individual seller of the week.
The Mint’s newest 5-ounce collectible was its second best individual seller. The 3-inch coin launched on Friday, Feb. 9, for $154.95 and bears the same designs as the Pictured Rocks quarter. The collectible posted an opening three-day total of 13,952 coins for one of the better series starts — perhaps best when considering its release late in the week. For comparison, other recent 6-ounce issues opened with sales of:
- 14,612 coins for the 2017 George Rogers Clark 5 oz. (Indiana) over four days
- 14,642 coins for the 2017 Ellis Island 5 oz. (New Jersey) over six days
- 13,740 coins for the 2017 Ozark Riverways 5 oz. (Missouri) over six days
- 13,761 coins for the 2017 Frederick Douglass 5 oz. (DC) over six days
- 14,363 coins for the 2017 Effigy Mounds 5 oz. (Iowa) over six day

Hopefully the mint listens to the consumer / absorbs sales stats / the 1/10 ounce gold Liberty – top seller for the week / and continues to provide affordable options for their consumer base.
I love my 1/10 once 2018 Liberty / if they would have made it in a 1/4 ounce gold option, I would have bought it in a heart beat. Hopefully they do that for the next. Change up the fractional size for each new Liberty coin / First release in a 1 ounce platform than second in a new fractional size. Just an idea.
Mouse
Mouse,
I’m glad this beautiful coin ended up being a hit after all. Vindication, is this case anyway, feels rather good! 😉
I’d really like the see the U.S. Mint move away from the current packaging that leaves fiber pieces of the packaging inside the capsule that contains the coins. It’s really difficult to see if a coin has damage or if it is just some of the packaging fibers on a coin. I won’t order anymore coins from them that have this type of packaging. I’ll just get TPG slabbed versions of the coins instead.
Pictured Rocks 5oz from Mint, coming in damaged.
There is a nick in the edge of the coin by the “P” (ictured Rock), 2nd one I’ve received like this. I have another which is perfect.
So, if these are damaged from mint, there are less than 20,000 minted. Now, by my count, 19,998 🙂
rob,
Fortunately you have the option of returning the damaged coins to the Mint, but it’s still somewhat disconcerting that they are arriving in that condition.
JohnKT,
I don’t do slabbed coins because I wouldn’t be able to stand not being able to hold the coin in my (gloved, of course) hand. Each to his/her own.
Old Collector – yup, second time. I like the coin, it’s cool, and both my ellis island 5oz were damaged but did not know my return options had expired as I got to the coins about a week later.
I am not looking for MS 70 (etc) coins, not really concerned about that, but there should be no visible defects at all…
