Two collector products launched last week — a 5-coin set of 2018 silver quarters and a 3-coin set of 2018 Pictured Rocks quarters. The pair were the U.S. Mint’s strongest weekly sellers.
The quarters in the silver set honor national sites in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Georgia, and Rhode Island. Produced at the San Francisco Mint to proof quality and in 90% silver, the set posted four-day sales of 43,254. That’s pretty much on par with how last year’s set started.

Does anyone know what the story is with the George Rogers Clark Silver 5 ouncer? 25k limit and listed as “sold out” on the Mint website with only 14,739 sold….. and 3 other 2017 pucks are still for sale with greater totals. What gives?
Mike Smith, I contacted the U.S. Mint regarding this situation; unfortunately just ended up getting the runaround. The claim was that the unaccounted-for 10,261 George Rogers Clark 5 Oz. uncirculated silver coins are in a non-publicly-reported and therefore not enumerated category called “damaged and replaced”, which is supposed to be a rational explanation for why the number of listed sold coins stands at 14,739 rather than anywhere near the designated 25,000 unit mintage limit. When I subsequently asked why 10,000 of these coins being damaged and subsequently replaced didn’t still count as sold I was put on hold while a… Read more »
This situation has happened a lot in the past 2 years gentlemen. The collector “P” version 5 oz pucks & the plain bullion version pucks are made on the same (& only one special coin press for the 3-inch diameter coins) & they supposedly only make them in batches of 100 coins each at a time. Therefore, if they don’t see orders coming in to reach 100 coins towards the last couple months of a year, they call a “no longer available” so they can move on to the next design or go on a coffee break! They have not… Read more »
Thank you both for taking the time to answer – very interesting indeed
Mike Smith,
You’re very welcome; my pleasure.
Seth Riesling,
Between the “next design” or the “coffee break” options for dereliction of (Mint) duty, I’m inclined to go with the latter; it seems to be the more likely considering the pattern the Mint seems to follow.
Well, it looks as though, either by design or ineptness, the Mint has created a new key puck for the ATB 5oz P series. Move over Volcanoes!!
Thank you all for your comments. I learn something new every time I go to this site. Great commuity and a wealth of knowledge.
Cheers,
Mouse
Mike Smith,
I think that if one takes a good look back throughout the history of the production of coinage, what reveals itself is that most examples of coins that have come to be thought of and/or known as “key dates” have almost always in fact been the result of some sort of defect, miscalculation, accident, happenstance, misunderstanding, mixup, confusion, breakdown, malfeasance, misappropriation or even random as yet unexplained snafu of one kind or another that occurred somewhere along the way during the minting and its attendant processes.
