Too bad the 12 Dealer-Flippers got most of them. They make the money from the poor saps who keep them in business. Better them than me!!! LOL…..
I see the mint posted 10/18/18 release date for the limited edition silver proof set.I imagine it will have an S silver eagle this year as they minted them this year. a reverse proof would make the 50th anniversary really special. I can wish can’t I.
The Proof Palladium Eagle is the most aesthetically appealing coin the U.S. Mint has produced in years.
Kudos to the U.S. Mint on a job well done!
I agree it is beautiful. But wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had artists of high caliber who had new designs for such issues? The silver, gold, palladium issues are all using obverses that are over 100 years old. Surely we’ve made some artistic advances since then.
Agreed, Richard….but these 2 high relief engravings have never been seen together on a single coin together until this coin was issue….that I’m aware of. And so while we are waiting for the US Mint to employ an engraver / sculptor as talented as A. Weinman or his son Robert Weinman, this Palladium Liberty will certainly be quite acceptable to me as high quality worthy of the investment into purchasing one. I feel these high relief engravings are much more aesthetically appealing and technically advanced (different levels of frosting were used in this proof design) than the much, much poorer… Read more »
Thanks for the thoughtful reply. No question you are correct, except I just don’t see why another Weinman, Fraser, St. Gaudens, etc. isn’t out there. It is just going back over and over to the same designs, no matter how beautiful, that I find unimaginative. Yes, genius is not predictable, but to have several in a short time and then no such level of talent again…maybe the mint isn’t looking hard enough.
1060 Ebay sales of the new palladium coin for over $2000. There is another 200 listing. It is heading towards a 10% turnover of these coins in a couple weeks. How many people that bought them actually bought them to keep? Who are the people paying so much over the issue price so quickly? It isn’t because they aren’t available on secondary market.
I do believe many collectors got caught up in the frenzy and hype….understandably so for a coin of this exceptionally high quality. So when they were unable to purchase one direct from the US Mint, that panicky feeling of “Gotta get one right now” must have kicked in and some were willing to pay substantial premiums in the after market. I understand that jonesing feeling….I’ve had it more than once in the past and it makes you do somewhat irrational things sometimes. So I’m not going to condemn those collectors who paid $2K plus for this coin. Each person has… Read more »
Received my 2018 palladium and had it graded. Came back as a 69. Looked at it under a jewelers lighted magnifier and it has a rim defect which is from when it was minted. Has anyone else noticed this flaw? Rest of coin is perfect.
