Precious metals futures registered mostly modest gains Tuesday. Gold climbed for a ninth time in ten sessions, but failed in returning to the fifteen-week high settlement level reached on Friday.
Gold for August delivery rose $1.90, or 0.1%, to settle at $1,331.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Early selling pressure that was tied to keener trader/investor risk appetite this week gave way to some bargain hunting following recent losses in the yellow metal," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Metals Inc., said in a report. "A slightly lower U.S. dollar index today and U.S. stock indexes backing down a bit also worked in favor of the precious metals market bulls."
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,323.60 to a high of $1,333.80. They fell 1.3% on Monday. On Friday, they ended at their highest price since Feb. 20.
Silver for July delivery added 10.1 cents, or 0.7%, to close at $14.74 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $14.63 and $14.79.

July platinum gained $9.10, or 1.1% to $814.30 an ounce, ranging from $800.40 to $815.90.
