US Mint Sales: Nearly 540,000 Apollo 11 Commemorative Coins Sold In Six Months

Stories last week about the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing boosted sales of the U.S. Mint’s commemorative coins celebrating the event.

The dome-shaped commemoratives realized their strongest week of sales since February. Four of the available seven Apollo 11 coin products were among the Mint’s top weekly sellers. The 2019-P Proof Apollo 11 Silver Dollar led them all, advancing 8,636 to 184,911. The West Point gold proof ranked ninth, despite its higher price, climbing 1,061 to 29,584.

Overall, collectors scooped up another 14,311 Apollo 11 coins to nearly triple their previous weekly sales, which itself was strong given that their initial launch dates back six months. A combined 539,374 have now sold.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 156 numismatic products. Seventy-one of them outperformed their prior weekly gains against 59 previously. Nine products increased by more than 1,000 units compared to 5 previously.

In addition, 3 products saw their sales reduced compared to 2 previously. Two of them fell more than typical with the War In The Pacific Three-Coin Set dropping 303 units to 11,819 and the no-longer-available 2019 American Legion Silver Dollar and Medal Set falling 32 to 9,888.

In my opinion, The finest proof $5 gold coin the Mint has ever made hands down. From the special last week on the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, They showed those 2 pictures that were taken on the moon, And, They look identical to the coin. Phenomenal job,craftsmanship United states Mint. I love mine.These should’ve sold out long ago.

Actually the silver looks more ‘authentic’ (closer to moon color). Maybe they should have done these in platinum or palladium…

IMHO Only on the 5oz does the design pop & come alive. The others are too small. Should have gone with something different, legislation is stupid if it mandated ALL with the same designs……
