Silver futures declined Thursday while gold, platinum and palladium gained following their losses in the previous session.
Gold for December delivery rose $2.90, or 0.2%, to settle at $1,515.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"We are seeing increasing volumes in the exchange-traded funds (ETF) to position gold on yesterday’s sell-off. This goes to show that these dips are being bought by investors," Reuters quoted Daniel Ghali, commodity strategist at TD Securities.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,507.10 to a high of $1,519.50. They fell 1.8% on Wednesday, they rose 0.6% on Tuesday — marking their highest settlement since Sept. 4, and they gained 1.1% on Monday.
Silver for December delivery gave back 16.1 cents, or 0.9%, to settle at $17.912 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $17.78 and $18.11. They sank 3% on Wednesday, they lost 0.4% on Tuesday, and they surged 4.8% on Monday — closing at their highest point since Sept. 5.

January platinum settled up $7.10, or 0.8% to $942.70 an ounce, ranging from $933.50 to $944.40.
- Palladium for December delivery jumped $31.10, or 1.9%, to $1,642.90 an ounce, trading between $1,611.90 and $1,644.30. On Tuesday, they finished at a record settlement of $1,646.40.
London Precious Metals Prices
In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Wednesday PM to Thursday PM:
- Gold declined $22.35, or 1.5%, to $1,506.40 an ounce.
- Silver dropped 60 cents, or 3.2%, to $17.97 an ounce.
LBMA platinum and palladium prices are available on the LBMA’s website with a delay of midnight.
