Precious metals futures finished higher Tuesday. Palladium’s gain was its third in a row while platinum extended its winning streak to two straight. Gold and silver, meanwhile, climbed from two-week lows.
Gold for December delivery added $3.40, or 0.2%, to settle at $1,460.30 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"The only story here is the China-U.S. (trade deal). Last few sessions, gold has been selling off on hopes for a U.S.-China deal. Right now, gold is paused here and is in kind of a wait-and-see (mode)," Reuters quoted Bob Haberkorn, senior market
strategist at RJO Futures.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,449.60 to a high of $1,462.80. They declined 0.5% on Monday, marking their lowest settlement since Nov. 12.
Silver for December delivery rose 15.9 cents, or 0.9%, to settle at $17.045 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $16.78 and $17.09. They fell 0.7% on Monday, logging their lowest finish since Nov. 12.

January platinum added $11.30, or 1.3%, to $911.70 an ounce, ranging from $896.40 to $919.
- Palladium for March delivery — the new, most active contract — rose $10, or 0.6%, to $1,782 an ounce, trading between $1,752 and $1,792.
London Precious Metals Prices
In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Monday PM to Tuesday PM:
- Gold declined $3.75, or 0.3%, to $1,454.65 an ounce.
- Silver rose 6.5 cents, or 0.4%, to $16.935 an ounce.
