Precious metals futures made gains Tuesday that ranged from 0.2% for gold to 2.7% for platinum. Palladium logged its fifth straight record settlement.
Gold for February delivery climbed $3.20 to settle at $1,468.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Gold continues to see some soft haven demand in Asia, but interest remains low. U.S. consumers’ inflation expectations rose slightly in November, bringing the outlook for near and medium-term inflation up from five-year low in the New York Federal Reserve survey has probably kept the bid under gold in Asia," MarketWatch quoted Stephen Innes chief Asia market strategist at AxiTrader.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,464.20 to a high of $1,473.70. They dipped 0.01% on Monday, marking their lowest settlement since Nov. 27.
Silver for March delivery moved up 6 cents, or 0.4%, to settle at $16.702 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $16.62 and $16.77. They gained 0.3% on Monday.

January platinum jumped $24.10 to $922.60 an ounce, ranging from $895.70 to $926.70.
- Palladium for March delivery tacked on $12.50, or 0.7%, to a record settlement of $1,869.10 an ounce. Palladium traded between $1,851.40 and $1,875.
London Precious Metals Prices
In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Monday PM to Tuesday PM:
- Gold rose $3.25, or 0.2%, to $1,464.95 an ounce.
- Silver gained 5.5 cents, or 0.3%, to $16.675 an ounce.
