In trading action Thursday, gold and silver bounced to recover some of their prior-day losses, platinum advanced more than it lost on Wednesday, and palladium ended lower for a second day in a row.
Gold for February delivery settled up $5, or 0.3%, to $1,913.60 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Overall, "the gold market is caught deep inside ‘no man’s land’," said Edward Moya, senior market analyst, at Oanda, in a market update reported by MarketWatch. " One session gold is lower as yields rise alongside with the dollar, then the next one has gold bouncing back on the reflation trade."
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,907.50 to a high of $1,929.60. They fell 2.3% on Wednesday, they climbed 0.4% on Tuesday — ending at their highest price since Sept. 18, and they tacked on 2.7% on Monday.
Silver for March delivery gained 21.9 cents, or 0.8%, to close at $27.261 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $26.02 and $27.50. They dropped 2.2% on Wednesday, they advanced 1% on Tuesday, for their highest settlement since Sept. 1, and they soared 3.6% on Monday.

April platinum tacked on $14.40, or 1.3%, to $1,124.60 an ounce, ranging from $1,098 to $1,131.40.

Palladium for March delivery fell $16.50, or 0.7%, to $2,431.60 an ounce, trading between $2,408.50 and $2,464.50.

In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Wednesday PM to Thursday PM:
- Gold declined $11.85, or 0.6%, to $1,920.10 an ounce.
- Silver fell 39.5 cents, or 1.4%, to $27.13 an ounce.
