Precious metals registered losses Wednesday that ranged from 0.3% for gold to 2.6% for platinum. Gold’s decline was its fifth in a row.
Gold for February delivery fell $6 to settle at $1,844.90 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The settlement was the lowest since Jan. 19.
Gold was "pushed back and forth … by strength in the dollar Index, which is bearish, and a fall in the 10-year Treasury yield, which is bullish" for the metal, Brien Lundin, editor of Gold Newsletter, told MarketWatch. They’re "just the same kind of daily crosswinds that will create wiggles in gold’s long-term uptrend."
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,835.20 to a high of $1,851.50. They shed 0.2% on Tuesday and they slipped 0.05% on Monday.
Silver for March delivery fell 14.9 cents, or 0.6%, to settle at $25.389 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $25.02 and $25.55. They gained 0.2% on Tuesday and they lost 0.3% on Monday.

April platinum closed down $28.40 to $1,079 an ounce, ranging from $1,064.10 to $1,108.
- Palladium for March delivery gave back $14.50, or 0.6%, to $2,310.50 an ounce, trading between $2,304 and $2,332.50.

In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Tuesday PM to Wednesday PM:
- Gold fell $13.60, or 0.7%, to $1,843 an ounce.
- Silver declined 21.5 cents, or 0.9%, to $25.185 an ounce.
