Precious metals registered increases Tuesday that ranged from 0.8% for gold to 2.5% for platinum. The gains for gold and platinum were their fourth in a row.
Gold for June delivery rose $14.20 to settle at $1,743 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Gold and silver prices are are solidly up in midday U.S. trading Tuesday, boosted by short covering in the futures market and perceived value buying in the cash market. A rally in the crude oil market after Monday selling pressure and a weaker U.S. dollar index today are bullish ‘outside market’ forces working in favor of the precious metals bulls," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,728.20 to a high of $1,746.70. They inched up 0.02% on Monday.
Silver for May delivery advanced 44.7 cents, or 1.8% to settle at $25.227 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $24.79 and $25.36. They declined 0.7% on Monday.

July platinum added $30.70 to $1,240.50 an ounce, ranging from $1,202.80 to $1,248.70.
- Palladium for June delivery added $35.50, or 1.3%, to $2,690.20 an ounce, trading between $2,646 and $2,699.
