Two of the most anticipated numismatic releases of the year happen today after a delay from their initial June 1st scheduled appearance. At Noon (ET), and likely available for not long after, the United States Mint will begin accepting pre-orders for the 2021-D Morgan Silver Dollar and the 2021-S Morgan Silver Dollar.
Both are struck from 0.858 troy oz. of .999 fine silver to an uncirculated finish at the Denver and San Francisco Mints, respectively.
These silver dollars are part of six offered by the U.S. Mint to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the transition from Morgan dollars to Peace dollars. The coins were authorized by Public Law 116-286, the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act.
In May, the Mint offered for pre-order the 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar with a CC (Carson City) Privy Mark and the 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar with an O (New Orleans) Privy Mark as the first two of the six associated dollars. Their launch, however, was riddled with issues as U.S. Mint customers experienced multiple website glitches when trying to place their pre-order. Acknowledging the problems, the Mint first postponed and then announced later pre-order dates for the four remaining dollars, with two for today and the last two in a week.
"During the initial pre-order window for the Morgan & Peace Dollars, the Mint experienced an extraordinarily high volume of BOT traffic. These BOTs were programmed to conduct technology-driven transactions which caused significant interference with many transactions by Mint customers," the U.S. Mint explained in part. "The Mint has now identified a solution that we expect will mitigate most of the issues caused by BOT traffic."
In addition, the Mint reduced household limits for each dollar to three from ten.
All of this leads us to today’s offering of the 2021-D and 2021-S Morgan Silver Dollars, two months and two days after originally scheduled. Assuming a relatively smooth debut, the Mint plans a final 2021 Morgan and a 2021 Peace dollar to follow on the 10th. Both will be produced in Philadelphia but will not carry a mintmark.
2021 Morgan Dollar Designs and Specifications
The authorizing law for these coins requires that they feature designs similar to those on the century-plus old Morgans. As such, the Mint scanned its historic assets using modern technology to recreate the designs for 2021. U.S. Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan created the original artwork which appeared on silver dollars from 1878 to 1904, and then again in 1921. It is for his work that these coins have taken their nickname.
On obverses (heads side) of each is Lady Liberty in profile. A cap, flora, and a crown incused with the word "LIBERTY" adorn her head, while 13 stars, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the date of issuance encircle her.
Reverses (tails side) depict a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings clasping arrows and an olive branch, accompanied by a wreath. Reverse inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR."

Pre-ordering and Shipping
Pre-order the coins directly from the U.S. Mint’s online store at 2021-D Morgan Silver Dollar and at 2021-S Morgan Silver Dollar.
Each coin is $85 with an initial household order limit of three.
Pre-sales of the dollars are expected to last just a short time despite the official U.S. Mint ordering window which extends to Aug. 17. Shipments will not begin until October, but credit card information will be verified by the U.S. Mint when pre-ordering. The actual charge for the coins will not occur until products ship. It is recommended to always keep current credit card information on account with the Mint to prevent order cancellations for later shipping products.
The silver dollars ship in a black box with an outer sleeve adorned with an image of the coin obverse and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
Typical government service that makes things more difficult than are required. Wait until they are allocating health care. Finally was able to check out.
Last year I had an enrollment order that never was sent. Charged my card, but did not send the products. Order totaled $4,300. Visa would not issue a chargeback and I had to pay the charge. Took me almost 8 months to get a refund. Finally had to go through my congressional representatives to get final resolution. The mint is not our friend.
Looking back on it, it truly gave me reason to question why I do business with this institution. After about 5 weeks of asking them why the tracking number was not in the system, or where is my order (two gold eagles). They made me fill out a form and send it to them. All the information that was on the form they had, with exception of my signature. For six months I called (no answer for month’s due to COVID. Had to leave message.) VISA would not issue a charge back I guess because it was a government agency.… Read more »
This is just soooo bad.
I have sent a certified letter to the director of the mint, never ever have i ever been so jerked around by a governmental agency as this one! Each time, they find a reason to cancel the order. TRY calling the 800 # and they disconnect you each time! And I have to feel ‘some’ people got all they wanted and those of us on line got zilch
Ordered 2 of each at noon. Placed in cart with transaction and order confirmed by 12:03. I had two tabs opened on my laptop. One for the S ordering page and one for the D using my same login acct. Both orders place at the same time. Four coins in the cart…..done and done! Very little lag time.
Same circumstance and strategy with two tabs – everything in cart at 3 minutes past….I spent the next 15 minutes repeating until I finally received confirmation of order.
This was the way I did it…click to order, waaaiiit, bad gateway, hit the browser back button, repeat.
I had to do the exact same thing…..SIX TIMES before it accepted and I finally got the confirmation !!! It took 15 minutes.
Are your orders showing up as ‘back ordered’ on the website?? Thanks
Yep. “Back ordered” with a firm order number. Won’t be made and shipped until October.
Thanks for your reply. I had ordered baseball gold back a few years ago and they had a ‘back ordered’ status but I never received them. Hope this isn’t the case for these Morgans.
The message I am hearing from multiple customers is “Don’t count your Morgans until they are in your hands.”
Me to, it was a lot better this time with out the bots.
Correction needed! My AmEx card was charged during the transaction. In fact, I got the email from them telling me so before my confirmation from the Mint.
Nope, I have a pending charge for the six I got yesterday!
Kirk,
Yes it will show as a ‘pending charge’ for a few days, possibly even a week, and then it will disappear until the coin ships. You’re only charged when the item shows up in the ‘transaction’ page, so relax, as that won’t be until mid October!
My Visa was the same for these two and the previous two.
I am going to go buy a case of condoms and send them to the US mint and tell them to go get F***ed
yeah that should be helpful – what is wrong with people today?
Make sure they have a mint mark on them!!
Such a bargain at $85.
I was able to get each one but I’ll tell you it wasn’t easy I mean it’s funny though because it asked me if I was human and I had to put my finger on my phone and scan it I was like what the f*** is this a blood pressure device or what my blood pressure was so high anyway at that point that it didn’t matter but at least I’ve got all of them so far now I have to get the ones for next week and they haven’t even shipped yet these aren’t going to ship until… Read more »
Kaiser – Actually it was Rosie the Robot who was trying to keep Elroy from ordering off of George Jetson’s credit card.
You will be assimilated.
Another joke on the morgan dollars. Ordered 3 denver. And 3 san frans. Coins were in my cart and after 12 attempts to finish the order. Coins are not available. They were in my cart….trying. To complete the order. How can my coins be taken from my cart. The ordering process. Was not fixed just as bad as b for.
Sorry man, that really sucks. That’s what happened to me with the CC & O except my order window was may 20 seconds instead of 20 minutes.
Those coins were not yours yet. You had not checked out nor had they been paid for.
I agree with you – same thing happened to me. They took it out of my bag – I ordered 1 minute after 12:00 P.M. EST Really frustrating but I am sure a few dealers got to receive a few thousand coins! Aargh!
You know that 10% received first strike, MS70 pieces. Urks me to no end. Mine will probably be graded at MS68 at best.
The rest of us do have evidence that the Bulk Purchasers get 10% off the top. We READ !! Actually, I think it is. I tried to purchase a limited quantity item from another company some months ago and had items removed from my cart in less than 3 minutes (from adding the item to my cart to hitting the final purchase button and being told my cart was empty). I was outraged. That rep said they use Instacart and it doesnt hold items when they are in a cart. Imagine shopping at the supermarket when someone removes an item from your cart and after you confront them tells you what To Clarify says above. Would anyone here find… Read more »

Yep!

Kaiser, your wit is very much appreciated.

I entered the fray at 9:00am (ET) sharp and got confirmation at 9:06am that my order for (3) 2021-S Morgans was accepted. The night before I added paypal to my US Mint account and when it came time to order today, paypal wasn’t an option so I tore around madly looking for a credit card. I deputized my significant other (also a collector) to order the 2021-D coins. She also started at 9:00am and got her confirmation at 9:14am after several error messages. I think the first credit card she tried was rejected. So far so good, but based on… Read more »
Interesting considering that the coins didn’t go on sale until 12:00 (ET).
3 to 10? When did that happen? Didn’t happen today when I was ordering that’s for sure. I count myself lucky that I managed to get 3 for each mint mark. When I did try to add more than three in my cart the site gave me an error.
Did anyone else manage to order 10?
they reduced the number to allow more people to get them… in fact the original idea was to have a min of 25…!!
I got on at 11:00 central time and had 3 of each in my cart. After three Bad Gateway messages was able to place my order. All told it took 10 minutes. Much smoother than the last few offerings.
Wanted just one coin the morgan s and everything was going fine up to place your order then it pop up, bad gate way. Four times bad gate way came up 10 minutes in then on my 5th try finally order accepted with confirmation of order.
What is the status of your CC and O privy Morgan orders? I made the pre-order within minutes and had both acknowledgement and confirmation emails sent to me. I know the coins won’t ship until October but now the “Status” of my two orders is “Backorder”. To me this implies I am no longer confirmed to receive the coins. Does anyone else have this same status? Is it normal because the coins won’t ship until October? Calling the mint customer service did not get me any answers other than, “The product will ship if it becomes available”. Which we all… Read more »
My 3 orders were confirmed by email & changed to backorder from processing. I assume it’s all good and just means they’re set to ship in October once the order is ready. The orders all have to be packed, addressed, etc etc.
Good to know I am not alone, thanks for the confirmation.
I missed out on the CC’s, but I did get a few O’s. They are showing ‘backorder’ also. Hopefully I can trade an O for a CC down the road.
Thanks for the response, Tony. It is seeming more and more likely this is normal business operations rather than me having some sort of an error.
I’m not sure how much stock I’d put into ordering status on their website. I just checked the status of the 3ea S & D’s I received a confirmation email regarding & noticed I have a cpl orders processing in my history from a cpl yrs ago. I have received those coins long ago.
Very valid point, Phil. Thanks for keeping me grounded in reality.
Lol! I’m not overturning any rocks. Whatever dimension I may be in, on a decent roll & don’t want to upset the shopping, uhm..applecart. Have confirm on 1st 4 Morgans, T2 ASE & T2 AGE 1oz.
I’d never bothered checking order status on the website (or checking my credit card either) b4 reading all the angst regarding it on here recently. I’ve always just followed my orders by emails I receive with order & tracking #’s until coins arrive. So, I took a peek & just did so again for sake of accuracy. 1st page of my order history shows 10 entries. 2 are listed as shipped, 3 as backorder & 5 as processing. Only coins I haven’t received to date are this year’s pre-orders, obviously. That accounts for 4 of these entries. I’ve received all… Read more »
Backorder is correct, it you had pending, that would be a problem.
This has nothing to do with the Morgan or Peace dollars, but about similar order debacle in 2005. The US Marine anniversary silver dollar went on sale during the summer of 2005. I was online and waiting for 12:00 ET. At exactly 12, I placed five of the silver dollars in my cart and attempted to check out. After about five minutes of waiting, I got an error message that my order did not go through. I tried again, five more times before I got a message that the item was sold out. I was very disappointed that I missed… Read more »
Ordering the Morgan D & S was way better then the first 2 coins, I was only able to get the CC last time after being kicked out of the site numerous times and for the O could not obtain. I could not believe I was able to get both coins while ordering them separate. Was logged on before the time came, as soon as it was open I clicked on the S mint Morgan and added it to my cart, I’m not saying I didn’t have problems but way better then before. I then clicked on the D mint… Read more »

I just received my 2nd ‘confirmation’ email from the mint for the two orders placed yesterday. I initially put in an order for 3 S Morgans (that took forever!) and then placed an additional order for 2 D Morgans. I received the ‘confirmation email’ for the 3 S Morgans at 3:45AM and just now got the ‘confirmation email’ for 3 D Morgans! It looks like placing all of those repeat orders paid off with an additional D Morgan! Is it possible the Mint was just thanking me for procuring the 4 coin set of Proof AGE’s? It leaves me with… Read more »
The mint sold 350,000 coins in less than 30 minutes. If their severs could handle the traffic they would be gone in a minute and people would be complaining they missed the opening minute. Despite Mints problems, at least you have a chance to get coins as long as you are trying now. It would be interesting to know how many people are trying to buy these all at the same time. If there is more demand than coins, then unfortunately someone else’s misfortune is someone else’s good fortune. That is how it always is with limited resources. Buying becomes… Read more »
OR, they could double the price and probably still sell out within and hour.
Did all the orders confirmations come back as ‘backorder’ or is mine actually back ordered. Did anyone’s come back with something different on their website? Thanks
On the Mint’s ‘Order History’ page it will initially state ‘Processing’, after you get the ‘Confirmation email’ from the Mint, it’ll change to ‘Backorder’. They are so stated because they won’t be shipped until mid October. Congrat’s on getting your order through!
It is funny how the timing of the Mint’s confirmation emails is all over the map. First I ordered the (S), then went back in and ordered the (D).
The (S) confirmation email came at 3:44 p.m. while the (D) confirmation email showed up at 8:56 p.m.; meanwhile my sister’s (D) confirmation email arrived at 6:38 p.m.
Thankful these orders went through in the first place.
There doesn’t seem to be any pattern to the confirmations. I placed 3 orders for 4 coins. The order of the confirmations differed from the order of the submissions. One came 2 hours after the sale. One came early in the morning. The last one came just a couple hours ago. The order and time seemed pretty arbitrary.
I got my S and D, one of each, easy peasy lemon squeezy. Took about 4 minutes max total. Got confirmation soon after. One thing I think slows people down buying multiple copies of each coins. The system probably had a harder time calculating the stock. I also wonder if people buying multiple copies of each coin triggers the system to verify they’re human since the bots are likely trying to buy the max allowed, something us normal consumers don’t want.
I don’t think so. I didn’t place more than 1 of each in cart and had lots of website page issues and never had the site to verify I was actually a person. I suspect it’s a matter of timing, geography, setup on particular computers (VPN, security, host service, etc etc) that explains most of the variation in user experience.
I have but from 1878
Just curious. Does the mint oversell high demand products such as these dollars? Have folks received receipts for placing orders and then had those orders unfilled due to no supply? I assume there are orders that cannot be filled for whatever (legitimate?) reason so that it is practically impossible to determine availability in real time. Does the mint try to guesstimate how many orders might get canned and thus how many they can sell at the risk of overestimating/over selling? Or do they end up with some unsold due to unfillable orders, i.e., to sell at a later date? I… Read more »
I think it changes with every issue as I researched this in depth a few years ago and at that time they did actually over produce the offerings only to accommodate irregularities. However, the reality is that people were able to put coins in their cart, then the website malfunctioned and 20 minutes later when the website began to function again we would be told the item sold out and the US Mint has removed the item from our shopping cart – that is the most common and aggravating scenario that I am aware – I do not know of… Read more »
Well, when you are on the public’s dime you can afford to discount bulk buyers who then turn around and use that advantage to profit at the public’s expense. Only government can afford to do that.
I was verified for the S Morgan but I was actually charged for the D Morgan, I had it in my cart in the first minute but did not get the coin until about 20 minutes later after several ridiculous us mint website errors and verify I’m a human garbage – by the time that was done the S were sold out and the D a few minutes later both lasting a few minutes longer than the less than 19 minute sell out of the others. WHY IS THE US MINT (US GOVERNMENT) RUNNING AN ADVANCE-PAY-SCHEME? WHY ARE THEY SELLING… Read more »
Senza,
This probably has nothing to do with your “Advance Pay Scheme” question, but I just found out NGC has a new label designation this year called ‘ADVANCE RELEASES’. An online dealer I’ve dealt with in the past is selling PF70 ASE type 2 proofs for twice what they are selling the Early Release ones which is 3 times the issue price.
Maybe all or some of the Morgans that get ‘certified’ will be designated Advance Release.
I am very curious who in their right mind would pay that much just to have them??? P.T. Barnum was right.
Carl,
I couldn’t agree more with you! It seems to me that these coin hawkers are selling collectible ‘coin holders/coin labels’ more than they are selling the coin.I bought one of the Silver Proof Sets from the mint for $105 and thought I was a bit of an idiot for paying that much for 7 coins. Then I saw them on HSN, in ‘Advance Release’ and they wanted $669! You can still pick that ‘highly desirable’ set on HSN.com! Good grief.
Speaking of …, does anyone think those “special” labels are worth anything?? Just wondering what others think.
I did get a couple of those pandemic PGS ones, not because I thought I was going to make a killing, but it seemed kind cool. This is just such a peculiar time.
Does “First Day” have any interest? “First Shrike” seems meh. “Black Label,”?wha’?
PT Barnum = Right On – the most valuable coin is the one you got directly from the Mint and have a receipt that you can provide if you decide to sell the coin and since all of the coins sell out on the first day and in the first 19 minutes of going on sale all of these ridiculous labels are just that = ridiculous. I have a lot of rules you might find weird but one of those rules is: a 10 cent plastic slab and a meaningless number or phrase only has value to the graders (middlemen, shysters,… Read more »
Did you notice the US Mint pushed back the reverse proof 2 coin release to September 13 without notice to anyone that I am aware of ? Also, their advance pay scheme seems to be imploding with all the coins they owe us collector’s and have already collected $$$ in advance but have yet to produce or deliver – even as they print $120 billion dollars a month for themselves they still can’t resist robbing the poor and middle class – I think it’s a disease of the rich and greedy elitists. Office of Inspector General to the rescue??????????????????
Senza,
i may have had a bad feeling about the magnitude and obvious corruption of our government, but dementia Joe (and his collection of lunatic Cabinet Appointees) is alleviating all misconceptions I may have had! If you can’t agree that dementia Joe is truly ‘unifying’ our country, there may be no hope for you. By the way, anyone here score one of those masterpieces of art offered by the esteemed artist known as Hunter Biden? I tried but was clearly out spent, by someone in China. But back to your original concern, no bad feeling.
Good News our posts and complaints may get an OIG investigation of the US Mint = the Government investigating the Government can’t imagine how that will work out ……. noticed noticed some of these blogs trying to take credit for our pain and heart felt complaints like they even cared(not) before we the victims spoke out and now they are acting like an authority on the matter lol…. we were victimized by the US Mint and it’s sham operation including but not limited to: giving all the best coins to HSN and criminals called dealers who then expedand the scam… Read more »
Went on site at exactly 12:00, and ordered one each S & D Morgan Silver Dollars. Got all the way thru check out, and it spent ten minutes in “Confirmation Buffering” before it timed out, and I had to start all over again. Just checked the latest tracking of this Tuesday’s orders. One shows as “Processing” and the other as “Backorder”.
I never noticed it before. Can anyone explain the difference? Or do I need to call my Doctor to have him come over and jump-start my heart?
Backorder indicates your order will be shipped at the future scheduled time. I received a confirmation with the backorder. Processing indicates the order was received but not yet filled.

With pass experience with the mint, I didn’t even attempt to order. I quit collecting last year because of the failure of the mint.
Billy,
Thank god our Forefathers weren’t like you!
Even though I was able to purchase 3 sets of S&D, I won’t believe it until they are delivered. Have had subscriptions canceled in the past for American Silver Eagles.
This is a side issue question. Do you know of any swap/trade coin forums online. I’ve tried collector universe – but can not figure out how to input any comments. I’m looking for an avenue to swap/trade mogran cc’s if I strike out tomorrow like I did with the D & S issues last week. Appreciate any suggestions you or someone might have. Any speculations on what will be in the 2021 ASE Reverse Proof Set? They only show a ‘S and W’ mint mark Proof SAE with no further information as to its composition.I’m thinking (and hoping) that it’ll be a 2021 S Type1 Proof ASE paired with a 2021 W Type2 Proof ASE. It seems to me that it should include one of each version just as the 1/10th Proof AGE Designer Set did. This would escalate the importance and value of this set since there were no Type1 S Proof ASE’s minted earlier in this year.
I think it will just be the type 2’s. And I agree with you that the set should contain all 3. Would be a much more better set (is that proper grammar asks a sarcastic one?).
The Mint still hasn’t posted the product limit. Got a feeling the release date or at least the shipping date, is going to be pushed to later in the year. Can you say “advance release”?
Carl, The Mint sure seems to wait as long as possible before they post any information on upcoming releases. The Reverse Proof Set will go on sale in just over 2 weeks and all we know is it contains a ‘S’ and ‘W’. As I said, I’m hoping for both a Type1 and Type2 ASE coin to be included in the set. If it is two Type2 Reverse ASE’s, I’ll still try to get one. I love the Reverse Proof coins and have most of the ones released so far. I got shut out of the 2019 S Reverse Proof,… Read more »

Did you see the latest from Mezack on Coin Vault last night? He was hawking for $400 two 2021 ASE bullion coins, one type 1 and one type 2. The hook was exacerbated by the US Mint and NGC. Supposedly the Mint set aside 4 green boxes of the type 1 (supposedly the last 4 boxes) and 4 green boxes of the type 2 (supposedly the first 4 boxes), and NGC created a label identifying them by the first and last boxes with pictures of two green boxes on the core. What made them especially “rare” according to Mezack was… Read more »

I tried for 1 peace dollar and after two “human” checks and multiple other errors and screen freezes I got 1 peace dollar and 2 minutes later both were sold out about in less than 23 minutes. Hope you had better luck!

Something I haven’t seen mentioned in all the news on these coins is that all the Morgans are using the reverse of 1879 with 7 tail feathers. That is probably the normal reverse for the Morgans, but interesting anyway.
Excellent observation – be careful the Vamer’s might disagree with you.
The Mint just posted the particulars for the 2021 American Silver Eagle designer set that goes on sale on August 24th. Two reverse proof Silver Eagles, 1 type 1 (W) and 1 type 2 (S). $175. 125,000 mintage. Another day where the website will be taxed.
This is breaking me – all the good coins in one month – I don’t want the type 1 so I’m going to go for the S tomorrow and that’s it for me other than I collect the American Innovations releases and may try for the George Bush Coins and Chronicles.

I had not run into the Capcha issue until this morning. Had to click on the pictures of trucks 4 times to get to the product schedule screen, entered 2 Peace Dollars and after it was in my cart, and I went to order the Morgan from Philadelphia, got a bad gateway message 3 times. Finally added 1 Morgan, and went to quick checkout and made it though the payment and final order process with no problems. Got my acknowledgement email by 9:01 am (PT).
The Peace and Morgan Dollars are still available for pre order as of 9:12 am (PT).
Sold out at right about 9:23 a.m.
12:23 Eastern Time
The Morgan (P) and Peace (P) Dollars are unavailable as of 9:30 am.
Well, I submitted my order for 3 Peace and 3 Morgans probably 30 times before the Peace ran out. I submitted for the 3 Morgans and that finally went through. I am done with the mint. In fact, I am done with the US government.
My honest opinion on these coins is they would be nice to have but no big thing. Lets compare the old coins to old classic cars.I would rather have a 1967 corvette then a 2021 corvette–I would rather have a 1969 Camero rather then a 2021 Camero. And that goes for these coins also give me an origional CC Morgan dollar compared to the remake of a CC dollar that is just a remake of the classic coins. What I am saying is the new dollars are like the new cars nothing like the classic old ones.
