Silver advanced slightly for a second day in a row Tuesday while gold, platinum and palladium declined for a second time in three sessions.
Gold for December delivery lost $8.10, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,814.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"The market is fixated on when the Fed will taper and Friday’s jobs number could determine how soon that may happen. The near-term outlook for gold is still bullish, but two robust nonfarm payroll reports could put a wrench in that theory," Reuters quoted Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,809.50 to a high of $1,817.40. They rose 0.3% on Monday.
Silver for September delivery climbed less than a cent, or 0.03%, to settle at $25.582 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $25.27 and $25.61. They edged 0.1% ahead on Monday.

October platinum fell $9.40, or 0.9%, to $1,046.90 an ounce, ranging from $1,036.30 to $1,055.40.
- Palladium for September delivery declined $38.80, or 1.5%, to $2,645.30 an ounce, trading between $2,634.50 and $2,708.50.
