Anticipated by many, once delayed, and likely not available for long, the United States Mint’s 2021 Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle Two-Coin Set goes on sale today beginning at Noon ET.
Officially named the "2021 American Eagle One Ounce Silver Reverse Proof Two-Coin Set Designer Edition," the collectible is is expected to be one of the most popular U.S. Mint products released this year because it contains a West Point Mint-struck 2021-W American Silver Eagle with the original or classic design (Type 1) and a San Francisco Mint-struck 2021-S American Silver Eagle with the new design (Type 2).
Sweetening the pot, the pair are in a brilliant reverse proof finish which showcases polished, mirror-like design elements that attractively contrast against frosted backgrounds. Further, the set’s mintage/product limit is capped at 125,000. This instantly makes both coins key issues in the entire American Silver Eagle series.
Initially, the two-coin set was scheduled for a release on Aug. 24. A few days before the 24th, however, the Mint pushed the release back just shy of three weeks to land on a less-typical release day of Monday (today).
Those interested in the set should be proactive. Recommendations include making sure your account with the U.S. Mint is up-to-date with a valid credit card, and logging in several minutes before its launch to be prepared. Anyone who has attempted to purchase a popular Mint release can attest that both patience and frustration will be part of the equation. The Mint has taken steps to alleviate past issues, but demand for this product is expected to still strain the Mint’s website. In some good news, orders are limited to one set per household for the first 24 hours of sales. This restriction will help more people get one.
American Silver Eagle Designs
The classic 2021-W Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle contains the original designs (Type 1) as seen on American Eagle program coins since their debut in 1986. This includes Adolph A. Weinman’s "Walking Liberty" design as first used on the 1916-1947 half-dollar obverses and John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle with shield design used on original Silver Eagle reverses.
Weinman’s Liberty design is also showcased on the obverse of the 2021-S Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle. However, the design was refreshed using modern technology and historical Mint assets to more closely reflect Weinman’s original intent. It also carries Weinman’s unique artist mark.
The redesigned reverse offers an eagle as it approaches a landing, carrying an oak branch, as if to add it to a nest. The new reverse design, created by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, will appear on all American Silver Eagles going forward.
Redesigned American Silver Eagles also feature enhanced security features, including a reeded edge variation.

Brilliant !!!! Run Forrest Run!!!! You forgot to tell them you are “HUMAN” !!!! OMG !!!!
Kaiser;
That’s as long as I expect it to take before the dreaded ‘Remind Me’ status appears. Since the Mint can now handle a little over 13,000 orders per minute, unless the increased traffic actually disrupts this order flow, I’m looking at a bomb with 10 minutes remaining on the timer. At least I still have 4 hours to try and figure a way to diffuse it. I have to say I was feeling much more opportunistic about this issue before last Thursday’s release. At least when its over it will be over!
Kaiser,
Yep, that sizes it up just about right, ‘Do you feel lucky today?’ Good luck with your endeavor today, as well as all on this thread! In less than an hour, we’ll know who’s still standing!
Kaiser, I was able to secure my set at about the same time as you! I went for a 30 mile bike ride this morning and yet this 45 minute ordeal to secure 1 freaking set of coins has me totally frazzled and worn out! I was kicked off the website instantly and had to order as a Guest. I figured better to pay an additional $4.95 in shipping than forfeit the opportunity to purchase the set. Glad you were successful with this ordeal as well! p.s. I’m glad I was wrong about how long it would take to sell… Read more »

An actual picture of me prepping for today … And yes, that dark spot just in front of my barrel is the bullet exiting it.

PS Did you turn out to be a Monkey’s Uncle after all?
Doomsday Monday!
Just received the expected email from Pinehur$t offering to buy sets for $400/ea.
Good quick few hundred bucks right there. Long term deal is better I think.
Younger generations don’t need these coins. They rather have digital everything. And when US belly’s up nobody would care for these premium coins either. They would worth same as the bullion. Flippers and resellers are my list concern.
Victor,
You say the younger generations only want ‘digital everything’, I wonder how that would change if our electric grid was attacked (EMP) or severely damaged and no one could access anything. Our country is way too complacent and never considers the possibility of radical changes to our life styles. I think about this because a lot of my wealth would also be in peril. One of the reasons I like to collect precious metal coins. And boy, did I collect a couple of beauties today!
Larry,
I understand your point. I collect for the same reason. My point is when times get harder nobody pays more then the spot price, whatever it maybe, for SP coins. Maybe 100s of years from now, give or take, these coins will worth a lot, we of corse will be long gone. Just hope your decedents hold on to them.
Victor, I think most of us on this thread agree with you about the price we have to pay for these coins. I bought the 2021 4 Coin Proof AGE set and paid $5055 for 1.85 oz. of Gold. I’ve bought AGE sets years ago (with the old design of course) for under $2000, so was I thinking I’m a bit crazy buying this set, you bet I was. But I wanted the first issue of the new design, the money issue isn’t a concern for me, and I knew if I waited the set would be gone. Same for… Read more »
Hi Victor,
As long as there are some rich people left in the world, they will still be valuable. Do people turn their noses up over Roman coins? After all, they did go belly up quite a while ago.
America has played a pretty large part in creating the world every person in the world lives in today so even after America is no more, our coins will be pretty desirable. Rare ones like this set, more so.
Jeff,
I hope you are right. There’s always a chance some generation will take correct turn and the past is respected again, but we’ll be gone by then. Just hope your kids or grand kids don’t dump these coins at a dealer for quick cheap cash not realising what they have.
It was nice of Robbie to show up today and accuse me of being a robot.
oh the pain, the pain!
LMAO!
They already have this set available on eBay for $500 plus!
Alright. Which one of you clowns broke the Mint’s website?
Oops, sorry about that, Daniel
Shouting out to the Colossal One, Mammoth! Just grabbed this headline from CNBC news for you:” Lab-grown woolly mammoths could walk the Earth in six years.” … what a wonderful world it will be.
Hey Rich, they can try copying all they want, but there is only one living Mammoth.
Were you able to snag one of those reverse proof sets?
Right On Mammoth. Yes, I was able to snag one, but it felt more like trying to shag one.
Rich, I also met with success after over an hour of trying, and got a confirmation email this afternoon.
We should all be feeling smug about having outlasted the flippers this time.
That TV guy probably. Chinese will make their own.
What a bunch of $#!+
this is bull*hit
Had it in cart, would not accept CC and site crashed
Bad gateway
The web server reported a bad gateway error.
The we get:
Web server is returning an unknown error
There is an unknown connection issue between Cloudflare and the origin web server. As a result, the web page can not be displayed.
I got that message multiple times, then finally got to the very end of the order, hit the final button, processed, then the page went blank. The mint page, but no info on it. My cart showed empty at that point. This was around 20-25 minutes after I placed it my cart. I have no idea if the order went through, and that is what was hidden in the blank area, or if it meant to tell me there was nothing in my cart. For the first time, I am not sure if I got an order through or not.… Read more »
That is exactly what my experience was. However, while staring at my blank screen afraid to touch anything for a couple long mins, I received acknowledgement email. So, I hope I’m good.
At this point I just tried to log off, but got nothing but errors, so I just closed the page.
I tried to determine if I had really got one after my post (called my CC company), and it doesnt look like it. I went back to the mint page, looked around, saw the item is still available, Put one into the cart without being signed in and then signed into my account again. Took many tries, but got back in finally. Showed one in my cart. Not sure if that was the one I added without being signed in, or if my original one reappeared. Multiple attempts to check out again and finally I actually was told my order… Read more »
Kaiser,
I hear that! I thought I was used to all the blockades & errors, but came across a cpl new ones for me this time.
Anyway, as the site settled down, I went thru the order process once more to satisfy my anxiety. I had reached the HOL, so hopefully my blank order confirmation screen & acknowledgement email were enough to secure a set.
I’ll be hoping for another confirmation email soon. I sure have a lot of those, lol
Jeff,
I kept ordering until I got a Confirmation! Never assume..you know what that gets you. This reminded me of the first Morgan (CC and O) fiasco. I’m just glad no one could hear me yelling at my computer screen about how the Mint had ‘fixed’ their ordering software Lol.
Hi Larry, The reason I stopped at that time of my first post was because my cart showed empty. I figured I either got the order or they were all sold out. Either way meant I was done. After I realized it might have been missing for a third reason (the screwed up mint website) and saw they were still showing as available on the site (when I was able to put one into the cart without signing in), I jumped back into the fray. Believe me, I know not to stop trying until they tell you your cart is… Read more »
Hello Kaiser Wilhelm, I enjoy seeing your comments on this site. I got my confirmation email 2 hours 40 minutes after my 69 minute ordering ordeal above…..but then I got another one 2 hours and 40 minutes after that. Each with a different order number. Both look complete and totally normal. Now I am confused. I guess the first order went through (20-25 minutes in) after all. How did the system let me order 2? Please US Mint, you have my permission to cancel one of the orders, just do not cancel both! I am not sure if I should… Read more »
Hello Kaiser Wilhelm, I just got an email from the Mint telling me that they have canceled the 2nd order because “If you did not request a cancellation, it was cancelled because the item(s) are no longer in our inventory and are not available for backorder.” Now I am curious if they were on the ball or possibly they monitor these comments (if they do not, they should) and discovered the violation from here. I will never know unless I hear of others who managed to place two orders that day and whether their extra order was canceled or not.… Read more »
Paul,
I got all of those, plus a myriad of others! I think I know how it feels competing in a triathlon!
Kaiser, I really believe the ‘Coin Gods’ were looking out for us today, and no I’m not referring to Mike Mezack. I couldn’t even access the mints website for 20-25 minutes and then was repeatedly terminated by the computer demons( bad webpage, etc, etc.) I didn’t know if any of the sets were still available as I never accessed the product page! I was amazed after all this time to finally see they were available and that gave me my second wind to secure a set. Like you, I considered throwing my hands up in defeat, but knew I was… Read more »
Or this. Which for some reason annoys me.
After 30+ bad handshakes, server not responsing, LA gateway is down, and refreshing my computer over 30 times, I finally got my order for one set through. Acknowledgment from the US Mint arrived 1 minute later. All done as of 9:08 am. Thank you, thank you and thank you.
Another s*it show by the U.S. Mint. How come Jeff Bezos was able to get this right… in 1995?
I was so close 🙁
just rec’d an email for order acknowledgement – hope I actually got it
usmint charged my credit card – maybe it went through
just rec’d email from Mint – Order Confirmed
I had that message too – but I hit place order & it went through
I was “so close” too. About 8 times.
Close only counts in Grenades and tidily winks.
I got that far twice before I finally got one order in.
Same here.. I just kept closing the tab and opening a new one. 20 minutes later, my order finally went through.
crash, crash crash gateway timeouts
17 minutes in and I got one! Not without hundreds of Bad Gateways and Web Server Down Messages but got one nonetheless.
I think the mint should stop selling coins. They aren’t very good at it
ya think?
They suck at this!
22 minutes and probably 50 failures later… got one. This really sucked
Had the same problem. Even reloaded the mint’s home page a couple of times, after numerous bad gateway, handshakes etc. Somehow my order remained in the bag. After 19 minutes was able to checkout. Received mint’s confirmation email. So I guess I’ll get one.
Screwed up even worse than usual but after 23 minutes of trying every trick in the book finally got one. Thank goodness for the household limit of one otherwise these would have been LONG GONE by then.
24 minutes of a shit show but finally went through.
Perseverance paid off for sure. Thankful that there was a household limit of 1. This was a crazy process.
it worked!
after a mere 23 minutes, and only getting the bad gateway error and web server down screens about 1000 times, and re-entering my cc info a paltry 25 times, voila it actually went through and I already got the mint email and order number.
i don’t know why everyone is complaining… /s
(seriously, the mint web site despite all the fixes they have done, and reducing the order limit to 1, is just still too darn busy. they need to rethink what they are doing)
As expected. Absolut sh t show. Got one after 27 minutes.
“Doomsday Monday”, starring 2021 (S)(W) SP Set. Oh by the way it is available as of 10:13 am September 14. The day after.
After numerous attempts, think I got one 24 minutes after the hour. Credit card not charged yet but did receive US Mint order acknowledgment. Kept retrying on tablet but was successful on cell phone using cellular service!!
I THINK I got one. Got the email that order was received, but I never know with the mint. Ordering, like always, was more stress than it ever should have been.
Your order is currently being processed. Please do not click the ‘back button’ or refresh the page.
Dont you tell me what to do!!!
Don’t let them take your freedom away!
It took 34 minutes, but I got one .
just went with my new way for getting coins. If I get it within 30 minutes GREAT. If not then I don’t really need it. And I saved the expense at the very least. I would say 90% of collectors can’t compete with Dealers like Pinehurst so why get upset. Keep on doing other things that help your soul instead of your pocket.
It’s still available!
Thanks, Larry T, I went on Mint Site an hour and 15 minutes later to check another order status only to see Set in my original cart placement. To my pleasant surprise and completed order with confirmation. So I broke my own method. I am not ashamed of admitting that I got a second opportunity and took advantage.
I can do everything else on the shitty website but order the coin! Such a scam and they fixed nothing. All in cahoots with the big boys.
Same difficulty as everyone else it sounds like…rec’d a confirm at :11 past – ran every play in the playbook, still couldn’t tell you if it was refresh, or using my phone, – or laptop. This is turning into a consistent “show”, and maybe that’s by design???Interesting article on a competing coin current events website about the ongoing ..Challenges of Demand Spike and Pandemic… on recent US Mint releases. Juicy tidbits in said article about 18 merchants with contracts with the US Mint who gov’t officials are unable to name…even after a FOIA request???Might need the body politick of U.S.… Read more »
Success! I couldn’t get the proof versions of either coin but somehow, and only after 30 min of trying and several restarts and all the same issues everyone has, I was able to get this one.
Keep trying! It’s not sold out yet.
This is really not the mints fault – ordering concert tickets can be like this too. The demand outstrips the supply….
FInally got through to process my order after 45 minutes…. and it asks me to verify that I’m human…. I manually typed in all of my info, this happened with the morgan releases, but at least the site didn’t crash right after dashing my hopes.
still theoretically available at 45 past the hour.
amazing how long it lasts when almost nobody can get through
Holy Schnikes,
I snagged one after relentlessly clicking the links, finally getting good at this. Kinda figured the website would be this chaotic. US Mint still hasn’t straighted out thier website woes one bit :/
After 48 minutes of bad gateway and server not responding I finally got one. This was the worst experience yet.
I think it seems bad due to the fact it took so long to get.
For me the worst ones where they sold out almost instantly.
Holy schmoly after about 150 tries in 45 minutes I scored one.
Goooooooooooool!
It’s been almost an hour and I’ve reached the order confirmation page twice, site crashed. Still no order confirmation.
IVE CONFIRMED 5 TIMES AND CRASSSHHHH
Hi folks,I was met with all the error messages that everybody has posted. I used every ounce of patience i had and lots of prayers………..I prevailed!!!! I spent half an hour refreshing the page after numerous attempts, rejections and re-entering my cc information for my long established account i got the “Thank you for your order” message with the date and Order Number, followed shortly be the Confirmation Email. Finally cracked the nut on a limited rub set.
Best of luck to everyone.
Persistence pays off, put one in my cart at exactly 9:00 am pst, and after countless attempts even to login, I was able to confirm and check out at 9:48am.
Don’t worry, Mike Mezack and ANACS has got you covered for a great “DEAL” Understand !!!!
at 1248, I was finally able to confirm that I got 1 of these. This has to be the absolute worst that I have ever seen the US Mint’s web site. Absolutely terrible!!!
Still available at 1:03 PM EDT
So are the hiccups and crashes. The fight to get one rages on!
The site is running smoother now, for me anyway. I just breezed through another order and got stopped by the “household order limit reached for this product” message.
After 55 minutes, I got an Order Acknowledgement email. Althought I submitted the order multiple times, I never got a confirmation through the website, just errors after hitting Submit Order. Maybe I got one?
After 1 hour and 4 minutes, and probably 100 bad gateways and three timeouts after hitting place order, my order went through. Whether or not I will get anything is left to be seen. Haha. What….An….Ordeal
Finally!!!! After over an hour of time-outs, bad gateways, proving I’m human, failed handshakes… Got an order confirmation. Starting to regret getting into collecting coins… This is by far the worst experience I’ve had in buying a coin set. I need to go lift some weights to get rid of this anxiety now.
Almost gave up but got one at 1:03, very pleased. I believe in miracles and this was one for sure.
OK im scared…i placed order numerous times….never with a confirmed order screen….now i got a household limit reached message???? Did i order 3 sets without a confirmed screen???? I only wanted 1!!!
HOL is one for this set.
Whew….thats a relief..So i wonder if i actually snagged 1
oh and now because of the message im locked out from even ordering!!!…well i guess its a wait and see now!!!..AAAAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!
O M G ….1 of my “place order” went thru!!! I got a email!!!! And i never got the mints message of a conf order screen when i placed it!!! I wonder how many of us are in that boat!!! Happy i scored it…. Only took 1 hour and 15 minutes. !!! This mess has just proven the mints website needs WOOOOOOOOOORK!
At 10:07 order went through. Wow. Almost gave up
One hour and seven minutes later, my order FINALLY went through.
Thank goodness this is the LAST coin I need to order from the Mint this year!
This cool!
One hour five minutes of trying. Finally got one! Don’t give up!
Just got one at 1 hour 10 min! Keep trying! Must have tried well over 100 times
Don’t give up people, I finally snagged one at 1:09 PM. I was bumped out probably 50 times or more.
Keep trying folks.Got mine after 70 minutes
That took OVER an HOUR!!! 😮 I *think* I got 1, got an order # and an ack email. I was surprised there was any left it took so long, I didnt hold out much hope, but kept trying. Also, given my previous B/O experience, I have no true idea tho?? But what an exercise in FUTILITY *AND* PERSISTENCE!!! Hmmm – also looks like some are still available??? How is THAT? The site has been so DOWN they couldnt START processing orders until 45 – 60 mins after it went on sale? Looks like most of us had the same… Read more »
(Yeah – repeating myself) …
Well … CRUD!!
Got 2 emails at the same time ~ 6pm EST –
1 said confirmed, #2 said call us. So I did.
The order in my acct does not show my CC info. There were a TON of problems getting my CC info FROM my account to load properly.
The agent said the order cannot be placed because of something with the payment method.
So…
CANCELLED.
Waah waaaaaaahhhhhhhh. 🙁
Cant win ’em all. Cant have everything.
This whole process made me feel like … 7 years of college, down the drain!!! 😀
It seems like they should have corrected any problems and leave your order intact. Any other business would. At least look at your past order history and confirm any discrepancies with you. So wrong.
When I called they said they cannot modify any order in any way??? GREAT! /sarcasm Great system (as we know by now)
Sorry, I’ve got the I didnt get 1 blues. Feels like I got zonked, gonged, punched in the junk, TPIR tromboned, my dog died, girl that said she was going to the prom with me told me she changed her mind and is going with another guy, AND my truck broke down!
Monday the 13th!! lolz 😉
I’m gonna have to see if a reputable (?) dealer gets one, like APMEX (you pay, but they deliver). Yeah, I’m gonna pay a LOT more 🙁 , thats IF they get any, but thats how the baby bounces.
Got one ! Acknowledgment at 12:06PM. I guess I am happy, but that was a MESS.
Had in bag immediately…but when trying to pay/confirm kicked out continuously…finally went thru after almost an hour of attempts. Order acknowledgment arrived…now hope for confirmation within24 hour! Yippie!
1:12 got order confirmation after many, many, service down messages.
It took me 1hour and ten minutes of trying, but I finally was able to get my order in. Usually by that time the item would be sold out, but I guess everyone was having the same problems I was.
The bots are coming for you Barbara…….
