In past years, reverse proof Innovation dollars sold individually — no set was offered.

About the Innovation Program

The Mint’s American Innovation™ $1 Coin Program debuted in 2018 with a single dollar and has followed with four additional strikes every year since. Four more will appear annually through 2032 when innovation associated with each state, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories have been showcased.

About the Set

The reverse proof set of 2021 American Innovation dollars includes the following four coins struck at the U.S. Mint’s facility in San Francisco:

  • New Hampshire – the first home video game console by created by Ralph Baer
  • Virginia – the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel
  • New York – the 363-mile-long Erie Canal
  • North Carolina – the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the first public institution of higher learning in the United States

Each is minted with a reverse proof finish, featuring mirrored devices and frosted backgrounds — opposite that of the standard proof finish. The regular proof set of 2021 Innovation dollars launched last month and 56,267 have sold through Oct. 31.

Ordering, Price and Limits

Priced at $28, the 2021 American Innovation $1 Coin Reverse Proof Set is available directly from the U.S. Mint via its online store for American Innovation products.

It has a production limit of 50,000 and is expected to sell out. Orders are limited to five sets per household for the first 24 hours of sales.

Chris —
You’ve gotta be kidding! Against my better judgement I clicked on your link and about died laughing. OK. Own up. How did you do this?

I thought I could do some amazing photoshop-like tricks (like being blessed by the Pope but with my face masked). But yours is outrageously the best.

Yeah was wondering if folks would click link but figured seeing usmint.com would make them feel comfortable and then get a good laugh 🙂 😉

Chris Terp

Mistook Mike’s query. I did not photoshop that, it is an actual medal being sold at US Mint. There are two medals for Ryder for his 1st and 2nd terms as Mint Director.

Mike Hunt

Kaiser & Chris —
You mean this Ryder medal is actually real? No joke Kaiser, I thought it HAD to be a spoof. Chris had me fooled. A very good spoof, but still a spoof. I can hardly wait to see how many the Mint sells ….

Kaiser —
When I wrote my original response to Chris’ comment, I did not. I didn’t because I was certain it was a spoof and all it could possibly do is lead me to bad places.

But I did do it yesterday. And yes, I saw the other one and several other “surprise: medals too. Since I am not a “medal” collector I don’t explore that part of the Mint’s products.

Great catch — Mike

Daniel

well I belly laughed because I didn’t know that Directors of the Mint had their own medals made.

Then I went up a level to find a rogues gallery of Government employees with almost comical representation. In fact some medals look so bad, I am wondering if they were self-designed with finger paints. Maybe they should have used Comic Sans as the font.

Is this self aggrandising a new phenomenon? Or have they always been available?
Is anyone really buying a Steve Mnuchin medal?

Daniel

It is funny seeing Steve Mnuchin’s name pop up in movies as a producer … knowing that he is Secretary of the Treasury (he is a massive movie buff if memory serves me correctly). I won’t judge people who buy these. Heck, I’ve got a whole bunch of 45th President coin/medals which I bought from Aliexpress, however these are objectively more funny, as they are given away to nephews, nieces and other people who will get a laugh out of them (yes, that is what the rest of the world does for a laugh … make fun of the President… Read more »

Remember Mnuchin and Wife’ infamous visit to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing??? All uncut currency immediately sold out and has been unavailable since.

Because she stole it all to buy an $80,000 designer Hermes, Burkin bag to hold the purloined cash! What a waste of a human life she is! A parasite on his bank accounts worldwide. Lol.

Sorry mistook your query to me. No that is not photoshop, it is an actual medal the US Mint sells to the public.

Antonio

It proves what P.T. Barnham is reputed to have said.

Antonio

$160 for a 3 inch bronze (brass) medal for David J. Ryder’s first term as Director of the Mint. I say “how much”?!!!!! Almost had a heart attack. Who are they kidding?

Funny how that picture happened. My wife was taking a picture of me in St Peter’s Square and I sneezed. And then this guy appears behind me and says “God Bless You”.
Who coulda figured ….

PS After I did this pose at Rio’s Christ the Redeemer, literally everyone there had to do it

Yep, and the 1.5 inch medal versions used to be only $6.95. Used to be great bargain for holiday stuffers for me, now I don’t touch ’em. … Not that I would of purchased this one though.

Exactly how does a 1 1/2 in bronze medal at $20 become a 3 in bronze medal at $160?? What ridiculous logic is used on medals…let alone who wastes the money?

Daniel

That is amazing

Antonio

Northern Lights, beautiful and free. David J. Ryder medal, unattractive and $160. Clearly the Northern Lights is a better value.

Hey Seth, how ’bout throwing in a pinch of ignorance to go with the arrogance since they go so well together. Double Lol.

c_q

well that’s just dandy. has any other mint director done such a thing for themselves? how’d you like to be the poor person whose job it was to engrave their boss’ likeness into a medal?

but still, $160 bucks for this or any other more popular design is way too much.

Chris Terp

I don’t know if other Mint directors got medals struck. Do know the Treasury secretary gets medals struck for them as they are departing.

sam tweedy

Don’t forget !! You can display this “JUNK” with your “BAT” quarters !!!! Yeah !!!! LOL LOL !!!!

Mammoth

The release of the ‘Bat Quarter’ could not have been more well-timed.
The Mint actually got it right, for once.

But then again, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

Gary Colon

How do you keep track of Products availability in real time?

Chris Terp

There’s a product schedule on the website giving you release dates for whole year.

https://catalog.usmint.gov/product-schedule/2021/

Also, you can sign up for email and text alerts from Mint on website.

Gary Colon

Sorry Chris, I was referring to keystrokes as Right Click Product Page, Source Code…Available?

Chris Terp

Can’t help you with that Gary. Maybe send an email to customer service at Mint?

Antonio

Can you believe the 2021 reverse proof ASEs are still available? I ordered a set Thursday and the Mint sent it to me today. I’ll keep checking when it arrives at my place.

Antonio

Thank you KW. I see the data-available is 0. So it finally sold out, or did it? It’s like the new math. Mine is on it’s way to me and that’s what I care about. Now to see how good it looks. I only missed the first ASE proof. Doesn’t matter, there’s always next year.

Rich

Gary Colon, here is what your looking for, courtesy of Daniel (our brother) verbatim from one of his earlier posts:

“Right click the product page and click “view source code” or whatever your browser says along those lines. Then CTRL +F and type in “data-available” (without quotes) and the number to the right of it is the quantity remaining.”

SENZA

First you must take control of your console with the simple command: CTRL+SHIFT+J then you just have to use your knowledge acquired via your computer science degree to access the specific parameters you desire – hope this helps………..

The negro league baseball coins in January is an interesting choice.
I’m obviously not close enough to the ground to get a sense of how that would be perceived in the U.S., though I can definitely say it wouldn’t pass the sniff test in my country which has a large amount of wokeness injected into community sensitivities.

Chris Terp

Well stated Kaiser. Too many “blue blood” Americans believe that America was always a united and an English white country, forgetting that black slaves, native Americans, Spanish, Dutch and French nationals lived in the Colonies, Mexico and Canada – also can not forget Russians up in Alaska and California. So America and Western Hemisphere has always been a melting pot and not something that “invaded” USA and this Hemisphere. Enough of the politics for me in this thread and … Looking forward to see what the Negro League coins look like and will consider one since I missed the 2014… Read more »

I made a post that still indicates “waiting approval” (for days???). Not sure if anyone else can actually see it yet? But I linked to the Mint’s site with the models … I’m kinda likin’ the artist rendering of the coins, even if rather 2D / “flat”. https://www.usmint.gov/news/image-library/commemoratives#2022nlb https://www.usmint.gov/news/image-library/commemoratives#2022purpleheartMay make another dent in the bank acct next year? He made one simple mistake he forget step 2 of his two part plan.
1.) Free the slaves
2.) Return them to their home lands

Senza, Don’t you think after over 200 years of slavery in America, that the majority of freed slaves were native born Americans and had as much right to stay here as anyone? There was a group called the American Colonization Society that did send freed slaves and free born Blacks who wanted to leave to Liberia from 1822-1861. Lincoln was a supporter of that program, so I guess he didn’t make a mistake at all. I think few men on earth at that time would have done as good of a job as he did. Empathy is the key to… Read more »

Its way out there and no definite date (Fall), but looks like “S” mint only so far, including the Peace. So at least thats only 2 coins we need to hawk over at noon on some date. Wonder what the max mintage will be and the household limit?

At 1st I had to dig for the 2022 schedule. It wasnt on the home page, but a few clicks away. And now I see it in the main page (browser caching perhaps).

Rob S

Hmmm, a colorized purple heart silver $. Nice.

Rob S

I know. I got the Basketball HoF colorized coins … the colors? … black white and … “basketball (hoop)”??? They were the only ones that interested me in the series, and they DO look much better in person.
(I just got note their grades are in – the 2 $s are 70s, the 50c are 69 and 70.)

Purple and black would be expected colors for the PURPLE heart coin. 😉

Chris Terp

I picked up the Silver Dollar coin. Didn’t get any colorized ones. Nice coin. Wish I got the Baseball Silver Dollar. Considering the Negro League Silver Dollar. Wonder why the NFL didn’t get a Silver Dollar for their 100th anniversary last year?

Rob S

Hmmm, perhaps 2023 W-mint reverse proof Morgan / Peace $s?

Rob S

The hover-over drop down from the main page only shows 2020, 2021. But click on the Prod Sched link, and 2022 DOES show up.

Phil

Apologies for previous post. Obviously a dumb thing. That’s all I’ll say aboot that. But, late to the party, obviously. My M & P’s were disappointing to say the least. Purely packaging. Only 3 coins out of 22 were ‘tucked’ into holder. The rest were loose. 1 of my 3 Peace coins wasn’t encapsulated! All the parts were there, just someone didn’t do their job. 3 loose pieces, that doesn’t occur no matter how bad delivery is! It’s frustrating, but I do enjoy flipping my peace buck in my hand without a capsule. 1 peace dollar was pristine to my… Read more »

Phil, that is so freaky. Sorry to hear how poorly handled and packaged your shipment of Mint products were. It would probably benefit everyone if you could report this mishap to the Mint for their review and investigation.

Rob S

It’s frustrating, but I do enjoy flipping my peace buck in my hand without a capsule.

I just picked up a bullion ASE II so I can “handle” it. I plan on using it as golf ball marker on the greens next year. 😉
I didnt want to do that with any of the proofs I’ve been getting – almost did that with 1 of my Peace $s, but decided against it. A ~$40 ball marker vs ~$100s worth of a Peace $, easy choice.

Antonio

Ah the days when you could flip silver coins like nothing at all. I miss the good ole days. I flip my real 1922 Peace dollar anytime I want.

Rob S

heh – For over 4 decades I’ve been getting proof coins or sets. Only cracked the seal on 1 coin in that whole time – to check if a blemish was on the coin or capsule. (It was capsule, so exchanged it.) NEVER touched 1 tho. I been a good boy.
I have several older below-UNC (some WAY below) coins I could handle, like Ikes and such – even a Morgan and Peace. But never touched the proofs, nor any Eagle – til now.

I had one that wasn’t correctly placed into / came loose in box. Came from Texas. Wonder if all the bad processing came from Texas as that was a new contractor to help out Memphis in getting coins out quickly.

Jeff Legan

Do not forget the owner of said facility is probably politically connected to the state of Texas or friends with management of the mint. Did any of you ever notice they never mention who owns the companies we give these government contracts to? In my state, a few years ago they changed the contractor that handles the lottery equipment. They really screwed it up (could not use pencil anymore, had to use black pen. If you had a stray mark outside of any box, it would not read your bet ticket at all ((my common sense says any marks outside… Read more »
