Precious metals divided Tuesday with gold and platinum rising for their fourth straight gains and silver and palladium falling to mark their first losses since Wednesday.
Gold for December delivery edged up $2.80, or 0.2%, to settle at $1,830.80 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The settlement was the highest since Sept. 3 when gold closed at $1,833.70 an ounce.
"Gold prices are on the cusp of a breakout," TD Securities analysts said in a note reported by Reuters. "Considering the extremely poor sentiment in precious metals across the last few months, the bar is low for prices to slice through trendline resistance."
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,821 to a high of $1,833.40. They rose 0.6% on Monday.
Silver for December delivery declined 22.4 cents, or 0.9%, to settle at $24.318 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $24.09 and $24.57. They gained 1.6% on Monday, registering their highest settlement since Oct. 25.
