Precious metals gained on Tuesday after falling on Monday. Their advances ranged from 0.8% for gold to 1.9% for palladium.
Gold for February delivery rose $14.50 to settle at $1,814.60 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Bulls are enjoying the near-term technical advantage as prices have been trending higher recently, and that is prompting mostly chart-based traders to step in to buy the recent dips. Bulls are also showing strength despite this week’s sharply rising bond yields and a rally in the U.S. dollar index," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,798.10 to a high of $1,817.20. They fell 1.6% on Monday, for their lowest settlement since Dec. 21.
Silver for March delivery gained 24.6 cents, or 1.1%, to end at $23.056 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $22.65 and $23.41. They dropped 2.3% on Monday, also for their lowest close since Dec. 21.

April platinum climbed $17.20, or 1.8%, to $971.20 an ounce, ranging from $946.10 to $983.60.
- Palladium for March delivery added $33.70 to $1,859.70 an ounce, trading between $1,825 and $1,896.
