Precious metals moved ahead for a second straight session on Wednesday, after falling on Monday. Their gains ranged from 0.5% for silver to 3.2% for platinum.
Gold for February delivery rose $10.50, or 0.6%, to settle at $1,825.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"The safe-haven metals are getting some support from a bit more risk aversion in the general marketplace at mid-week. A lower U.S. dollar index and higher crude oil prices are also bullish outside market forces working in favor of the metals bulls today," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,812.70 to a high of $1,830.70. They climbed 0.8% on Tuesday and they fell 1.6% on Monday, for their lowest settlement since Dec. 21.
Silver for March delivery tacked on 11.4 cents to settle at $23.17 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $22.89 and $23.30.
They advanced 1.1% on Tuesday and they dropped 2.3% on Monday, also for their lowest close since Dec. 21.

April platinum jumped $30.70 to $1,001.90 an ounce, ranging from $966.20 to $1,004.80.
- Palladium for March delivery rose $42.90, or 2.3%, to $1,902.60 an ounce, trading between $1,844.50 and $1,924.50.
