Precious metals kicked off February the same way as they ended January — gold, silver and platinum gained while palladium declined.
Gold for April delivery rose $5.10, or 0.3%, to settle at $1,801.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The close was gold’s best since Jan. 26.
"There is some safe-haven demand coming into the gold and silver markets, amid geopolitical and Federal Reserve uncertainty. Short covering from the futures traders is also featured this week. The bulls have put together a two-day winning streak, following last week’s big losses," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Gold futures traded between $1,796.20 and $1,809.70. They rose 0.6% on Monday, trimming their January loss to 1.8%.
Silver for March delivery added 20.2 cents, or 0.9%, to settle at $22.595 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $22.40 to $23.06. They increased 0.4% on Monday, reducing their drop in January to 4.1%.
