Holy Cow! Its great to see the Negro Leagues Baseball coins bouncing in the right direction. I’m glad their popularity is on the rise, and hope it keeps going, going, and gone!!
The price increase was the factor. True test will be the coming weeks and what ads the mint uses to intice buyers. IE we shall see.
I checked the amount available for the medal set a few minutes before 3pm on feb 7 . There were about 4170 left . Which means under 11,000 medal sets were sold
Total sales of the medal
Set are 10682!!
The Negro League Silver dollar without the Privy mark is on track to have a lower mintage the one WITH the Privy mark.
Chris, a couple of weeks ago Sir Kaiser made a similar observation. However, you have to look at the numbers across all options and make the distinction between Uncirculated versus Proof Silver Dollars for comparisons. With that said, here are the relevant numbers for the Negro Leagues Baseball Silver Dollars through Feb 6th: Proof Privy sales = 19,997 Proof sales = 26,316 (across all options) Uncirculated sales = 6,019 To put those figures into perspective, the lowest mintage Modern Commemorative Proof Silver Dollar is the 2017 Boys Town [mintage = 31,610] and the lowest mintage Uncirculated Silver Dollar is the… Read more »
Rich, thanks for clarifying. That being said, I think the mint would be wise to market these to baseball fans during the season when./ if the season starts.
I wouldn’t blame racism for low coin sales. Putting “Negro” on a coin isn’t a good look.
I think it’s more racist to buy this coin as it celebrates exclusion.
I’m over this woke shit
Sir Kaiser, in general and especially in more recent years you are correct, as it seems the appeal of commemorative coins has waned over the years since 1986 . However, it has not always been this way and there are even some relatively recent exceptions. Perhaps the Congress still has a big head from the highly successful sales of the commemorative coins commemorating themselves, the 1989 U.S. Congress Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Program, which had the following sales figures: Gold Coins = 211,589; Silver Coins = 897,401; and Clad Coins = 931,650. Here are some other staggering examples of commemorative coin… Read more »
Major D, with respect to your question on the process of design selection for commemorative coin programs, you are correct in that when Congress legislates a commemorative coin they have no idea what the design will be at the time. “Commemorative coin legislation generally has a specific format. Once a coin is authorized, it follows a specific process for design and minting. This process includes consultation and recommendations by the Citizens Coin Advisory Commission (CCAC) and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), pursuant to any statutory instructions, before the Secretary of the Treasury makes the final decision on a… Read more »
Sir Kaiser, your prediction could very well come to fruition, and I hope so. In order for the 2022 NLB Uncirculated Silver Dollar and Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar to set a new record for lowest sales/mintage for their variety, they have to beat the 2021 National Law Enforcement (NLE) Uncirculated Silver Dollar (mintage/final sales = 9,422) and Uncirculated Clad Half Dollar (mintage/final sales = 10,176) which both currently hold the record for the lowest mintage. The only yard stick for comparison of the 2022 NLB and 2021 NLE at this time is their first 30 days of sale sales figures,… Read more »
Better there than fallout’ New Vegas!
I’ll submit the hoops coin was a bust cause design was blah. A guy, a girl, someone in a wheelchair all headed for the rim? Weak, trying to be too inclusive & not offend, imo of course.
A bold design of someone doing a windmill jam or reverse dunk…something actually cool, would have increased sales. Mighta even reached kids, who aren’t really into coins.
Phil, Right On! Like Michael Jordan’s Space Jam flying like an Eagle bold.
I never called a black man a negro, I just called him a man.
