US Mint Sales: 2022 Gold Buffalo Debuts

Later last week, on Thursday, May 12, the United States Mint released the 2022-W $50 Proof American Gold Buffalo for $2,790.

The 24-karat gold coin was the U.S. Mint’s top weekly seller, logging four-day sales of 11,495 for 71.8% out of the possible 16,000 pieces.

Last year’s coin debuted at $2,740 and posted three-day opening sales of 14,254 for the best start since 2010. Excluding it and coins from years 2016 and 2010, which had early totals of 12,001 and 15,071, respectfully, sales of proof Gold Buffalos in each of the past dozen years logged early sales ranging from 4,110 to 7,899.

  8. 2022-P Proof Negro Leagues Baseball Silver Dollar (+303 to 19,333)
  9. 2022-S Proof Purple Heart Half Dollar (+240 to 17,630)
  10. 2022-W $5 Proof Gold Eagle (+227 to 13,907)

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 233 numismatic products. Forty-eight outperformed their prior weekly gains against to 57 previously. Not counting the just released American Gold Buffalo to compare apples to apples, 1 product increased by more than 1,000 units against 2 in the prior report.

In addition, 13 products registered lower sales compared to 19 in the previous sales report. The reductions ranged from 1 to 3,355, with the latter tagged to 200-coin bags of the recently released 2022 Kennedy Half Dollar. Two-roll sets of the half dollar also fell 703. Two other products saw high declines — the single-coin 2022-W Proof Silver Eagle fell 2,008 (the 40-coin bulk option also declined by 125 units) and the recently released 2022 Zachary Taylor Presidential Silver Medal fell 1,257.

Lightning fast regular shipping on the Buffalo – I ordered Thursday and got the coin yesterday. I think that’s the quickest turnaround from the Mint I’ve ever seen.

While I think this Buffalo beauty is a bit of Americana that rivals the Type 1 ASE, Indian Head Penny, and many others … my skeptical side tells me the real reason may be the Mint’s attempt to reduce the time for Buyer’s Remorse.

But since I (and hopefully you) buy these coins for their beauty and history, that shouldn’t matter for us, right?

I am indeed a slave to the Mint’s wishes (a.k.a., a “collector”). The worst Buyer’s Remorse I get is having to pay even more on ebay for a coin that I should have been able to get from the Mint. But wow, the packaging on these items had gone steadily downhill. They used to come in sturdy clamshells & wood-looking or leather-bound boxes. Now they’re set in cheap plastic with boxes that look like they’d contain a clad quarter. I have several Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns in those nice boxes. Sometimes the Royal Canadian Mint has nice presentation boxes as well. The U.S., the richest country in the world, a cheap cardboard box. You don’t get what you paid for.
