U.S. Mint sales for one of their flagship products, the 2022 Proof Set, is nearing the 250,000 milestone in the one-and-a-half months since its release. The clad set of 10 proof coins saw its sales most recently climb by 5,468 units to settle at 247,810, making it the Mint’s best weekly seller.
The Mint’s second strongest seller was last year’s Proof Set, rising by 1,455 units. Its sales of 499,489 are now a smidgen over double that of this year’s set. Elsewhere, the Mint’s sales data showed noticeable negative adjustments to the 2022 baseball coins commemorating the establishment of the Negro National League. Declines ranged from 18 for the uncirculated $5 gold coin to 3,384 for the privy-marked silver dollar.

And just like that…….The privy baseball dollar became the lower mintage of the 2 proof dollars!
Taking into account the old sales of 13,979 for the 2022-P NLB Proof Silver Dollar contained in the Medal Set and 3-coin Proof Set product options with the single Proof Silver Dollar old sales = 19,333, you get total old sales = 33,312 for the Proof Silver Dollar, compared to the total old sales = 19,909 for the Privy Proof Silver Dollar.
Guys, these are commemorative coins you’re talking about. If you enjoy collecting them, that’s your pleasure, but most of us only want to collect real coins. Personally, I could care less about anything baseball related or the mints ‘look we are Woke too’ releases. And that’s not even mentioning the sky high pricing the mint is demanding.I’m buying a couple ASE’s, the W and S minted coins, and that’s all for the rest of the year. Unless, of course, they reverse their decision to cancel/postpone the production of the Morgan and Peace Dollar.I’m not holding my breath on that!
Agree, commemoratives are real monetized coins. But their secondary market values are a bust for gold and silver which is why you can get a Liberty dollar for spot. No reason to buy these commemorative coins from the mint. If you want one wait a few years and get it a lot cheaper… if at all as I find I usually don’t want them after the release and mint buzz is done. I still have my enrollments for the ASE’s and I don’t know why as I don’t care for the weaker new design. I’ll need to reevaluate for next… Read more »
Hi Major D and Larry, If the commemorative coins are legal tender (important tip for kids: do not ever use them that way! Remember: first stop after raiding your parents coin collection, coin or pawn shop, then the candy store!), then I would say they are as real as any other coin. Like Larry, I am not big on commemoratives but I have purchased a few in my lifetime. I believe the last one I purchased from the mint was the 2009 proof Lincoln silver dollar. I thought he was a great President so I thought it was worth commemorating… Read more »
1995 W ASE is not a commemorative. It’s more of a type coin due to the different mint mark. Nor is the Lincoln commemorative ( I have one too) worth more than the issue price these days. Silver needs to go much higher to get a decent return on it as the silver in this commemoratives is only .7734 oz.
Hi East Coast Guru,
I do know the 1995-W ASE is not a commemorative.
I perhaps was not clear in my writing, but what I meant in referring to the 1995-W ASE there was more like “are there any commemoratives that have increased in value that much compared to its original mint selling price?” I figured that would give me an idea if someone will ever have the possibility of becoming wealthy collecting commemoratives. Thanks!
Jeff,
I had to chuckle with your reference to a Trump commemorative coin. As I’ve said before I liked his policies, not his persona. And no, his profile on a commemorative would be as worthless to me as any commemorative. I didn’t even buy any of the 2001 Buffalo silver commemoratives and they have appreciated nicely since their release. By the way, the 1995 W ASE is not a commemorative coin.I’ll bet even Donald would know that!
Thanks for the comments, Larry. Informative and amusing. As you might have already seen in my earlier post to East Coast Guru, I do know the 1995-W ASE is not a commemorative. I just did not convey my point properly. “You talk the exact same way you write!” I once was told by a co-worker I exchanged work emails with for months before we met in person.
There will be a Trump Presidential Dollar one day, after he dies and if the government decides to continue the issue of Presidential Dollars (as for George Bush).
Antonio, you can always pick up a Trump presidential medal @ $20 for a 1 5/16’ or $160 for 3” at the US Mint. No need to wait for the coin.
I can’t stand anything about Trump but I am a slave to precious metals proof coins. If the DJT dollar is included in the silver proof set, I’ll buy it. I suppose I’m more likely to purchase the Melania gold spouse coin (assuming I survive her).
Thanks for the info, Major D. I even vaguely remember the 2001 American Buffalo and I definitely remember when the March of Dimes set came out. I also like WWI stuff (the planes mostly). I remember I was tight on cash in 2018, or I might have picked that one up.
It depends on how good your manners are, and big your pocket book is. (said with a knowing smile)
Major D,
I know a commemorative is real, it’s just not a fungible coin. And why would what I think about a certain coin or series of coins be ‘bothersome’ to you? Am I supposed to buy something I don’t see value in just so people will think: ‘Oh, he’s Woke!’ I don’t think so.
Here, here, on producing proof S Morgan and Peace Dollars. The Mint needs to make it happen. First they teased us with the prospect of it. Then they withdrew the offer. That’s like in 1905, no more silver dollars because they ran out of silver. Yeah, right. They should have admitted they had a glut of silver in their possession they couldn’t unload.
The 2022-P NLB Proof Silver Dollar with Privy Mark sales loss reduction = -3,384 (-17.00%) most likely represents pre-sale orders cancelled just before the expected shipping/fulfillment date; and as of 3:15pm ET data-available = 3,190 for the privy coin which is back on sale.
Surprised this is still available as of 9:52 am 5/26/22. Picked up a couple more yesterday.
9:52 am EST
Looks like they may be around for a while; as of 11:50am ET (5/26/2022) data-available = 3,113
Yeah, yeah, got mine. I’m waiting for the Mint Set now. Also the Unc. W ASE on Wednesday. Is that uncirculated or burnished? I’m so confused.
They also sell for a different price than the uncirculated coins. I suppose the mint mark makes a difference, but I look at the mintage rather than the mint mark. I do know I won’t be collecting coins forever. One day biology will catch up with me.
Uncirculated, brilliant uncirculated. I try to buy the MS70 ones. I won’t say I have the complete series, but it’s a lot of coins.
I’ve still never received word one on NLB coins I ordered. Privy & set cause I wanted the JR medal. I’m completely putting the US Mint in my rear view mirror. Frustration too much for me.
My pops just passed & I was given huge stock market coin from when his Co went public. It’s probably now my favorite coin.
Peace
Ok, so I made a post this am that I would say wouldn’t offend a fly. & it got axed?
Peace
Phil, that makes me wonder if Sir Kaiser and SENZA are trying to post comments but they too are getting axed.
