Gold Marks 9.5-Month Low on Monday, July 11

16

Gold, silver and platinum declined on Monday, while palladium gained. Losses in gold and silver were modest, although the former still registered a 9.5-month low.

Gold for August delivery ended down $10.60, or 0.6%, to $1,731.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The finish was the lowest since Sept. 29 when gold ended at $1,722.90 an ounce.

"Gold and silver prices are modestly down in lazy, summertime U.S. trading at midday Monday. Bearish daily outside market forces squelched the metals market bulls today — a sharply higher U.S. dollar index and weaker crude oil prices,” Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.

Gold futures traded between $1,729 and $1,743. They declined 3.3% last week.

Marking the first loss in four sessions, silver for September delivery gave back 10.4 cents, or 0.5%, to settle at $19.132 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $19.01 and $19.31. They fell 2.2% last week.

In other precious metals futures prices on Monday:

  • October platinum fell $22.10, or 2.5%, to $860.70 an ounce, trading bewteen $856.90 and $886.

  • Palladium for September delivery added $15, or 0.7%, to $2,176.60 an ounce, ranging from $2,081 to $2,188.50.

Last week platinum gained 1.3% while palladium rallied 11.3%.
