The U.S. Mint’s 2022 Proof Set and 2022 Silver Proof Set ranked first and second in weekly sales gains. They should maintain their sales dominance for the next two reporting periods until the Mint’s next product release on Aug. 9.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Mint’s 2022 Uncirculated Coin Set (2022 Mint Set) dropped 6,453 to 158,257 during its first full week of sales. Some product declines have become almost normal during this time when returns take hold. Last year’s set fell 626 during its first week of sales. This year’s set is likely experiencing more-than-typical returns due to an apparent problem in packaging that makes some sets look like their coins are damaged.
Update (Aug. 1, 2:50 p.m. ET): The U.S Mint addressed packaging of the 2022 Mint Set, stating:
"The United States Mint (Mint) has been producing Uncirculated Sets for many years. Recent feedback from customers has indicated that coins sometimes rotate within the plastic blister, leaving the coins pointing in different directions. To rectify this concern, for the 2022 Uncirculated Set (22RJ), the Mint implemented a new package design that included four evenly spaced tabs in each coin well to better hold the coins in place. An unintended consequence of this change was that the tabs give an illusion that the coins are damaged in the coin rim area. Please understand that this is not the case. The coins are undamaged and meet the quality standards of the Mint."

Silver is rallying, up .01 cent this morning! LOL 😉
Congrats First-On-Thread – Your Silver optimism is acknowledged oops! wheres my Code Red
I used to be a member of an Optimist Club. Then, I started dealing with the Mint.
Doesn’t the Mint ask for your opinion? I’ve filled out Mint surveys, so I think all of us are an influence on the Mint. Someway or another.
I have filled out those surveys multiple times. I always get the sinking suspicion that they go right into the Mint’s spam folder. They seemingly have tightened up a bit on the order bots clogging up noon sales rushes. So, maybe I DID make a difference. Or maybe just fewer scalpers were interested in speculating in coins this year.
Now we’re on the same page
True but still a little bit sad.
Kaiser —
Fyi, your comment reminded me that I dined at the Windows of the World restaurant in NY’s World Trade Center. Fortunately I cleared my bill before all hell broke loose ….
— Mike
To quote Martha Steward, “And that’s a good thing.”
Thank goodness for that. September 11, 2001 would not have been a good day to have a meal at either of the towers. By the way, their replacements look nice. Take that Al Queda!
Major — Yes, so I was not surprised by this “retreat”. I and several others warned everyone to examine their sets closely. Maybe one or two crimps … but ALL if them? Look at the pic I previously attached. Thanks — Mike
Hey Major — I just took a closer look at the Mint’s own picture at the top of this overall posting. And guess what? You can even see the problems on THAT picture! — Mike
I’ll check my coins today and get back with y’all. Couldn’t be as bad as my uncirculated 1996-W Roosevelt dime with a finger print on it (still in its Mint packaging).
Ouch.
Hello Mike Hunt, At least the article confirms the damage is to the packaging, not the coins. I will be interested to know if your replacement set has the same problem or is pristine. If I am recalling correctly, the last time this type of thing happened to me, the replacement had the same issue. I returned it as well and just gave up on purchasing that item entirely. At a normal company, if you tell them there is a quality control issue with a product, someone checks out the remaining stock and verifies the remaining stock is good. That… Read more »
You forget, you’re dealing with a government agency. It’s good enough for government work.
Jeff — I cannot tell you just how much I WANT to believe it was only on the outside of the packaging AND how much I wanted to open one coin to validate what you said. But knowing the Mint, I thought for sure they would claim I screwed it up, not them. So I sent it back and ordered another to replace it. The reason being I don’t want them to have another chance with me on that set. That said, I like your positive attitude but think your trust may be a bit misplaced. I guess I’ve come… Read more »
Exactly…………This will never stop until they purge every single person in that US Mint building and change the locks on the back doors to keep NGC out.
Like Murphy’s Law, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”
Major —
I just received the replacement (that I ordered instead of trusting them to send me a “new” one).
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news … the replacement was also bad.
But re your 7 day window, I think this quality issue is so bad that they will have to refund or replace your coins when all the shit that hit the fan on this one eventually falls off the walls.
Don’t drink the Cool Aid. Make them shoot you.
— Mike
At the risk of beating this quality issue into the ground … in addition to pointing this out on the CoinNews site, I also (very directly) pointed it out to the US Mint when I returned my set on July 17. Quoting my letter “Dear US Mint: I am returning the enclosed 2022 Uncirculated Set because its quality is totally unacceptable. My guess is that whatever machine you used to insert the coins into its packaging left FOUR gross “crimp” marks in EACH coin! The following picture is of just one coin in one set … but it was the same for… Read more »
We finally got you to post a photo of your bounty sorry about the circumstances – that’s SO UNACCEPTABLE
Good letter. It is also excellent you posted it here for the public to see. This might force the Mint to take it seriously rather than going straight to the garbage can. Thinking back to recent quality control issues at the mint, it does seem that they all could have been caught with touch alone. The ones I am thinking of are: this issue, the raised rim on SENZA’s medal, and the Coin and Currency set that had the bill only half in the holder.
The other thing is I got both of those (what are the odds) unless the Mint is pumping out large quantities of this junk.
That is exactly what I did. I lost a lot of respect for the Mint that day. That is also why I am looking forward to hearing how Mike Hunt’s replacement looks. I pretty much expect it will have the same issue. If it does not, I will be encouraged to try a defective exchange the next time it happens to me. I was pretty sure (90%+) the coins were not damaged this time (now confirmed), otherwise I would have returned mine like Mike did.
Major D, Jeff, SENZA, Kaiser, Antonio & The Rest of My Virtual Coin Collecting Enthusiasts — Just to tie up this loose end … I just got confirmation from my July 17 return of this incredibly horribly shrink wrapped (or whatever they call it) abortion that they have processed my return request and money. But to save you all some time looking for my prior followup, I received the replacement set (that I ordered as a new order, not as a replacement in their eyes) about a week ago. And it was just as bad as the first. As a… Read more »
Hi Mike, Sorry to hear that your return/exchange went just as I thought it would. The Mint really needs to revamp (create?) their quality control department. If this was their plan to shut you up, it is the same plan they have been using for at least 5 years now. I put a printout of the mint saying the coins are not damaged with my set, since I probably will not be the person who sells them. If I thought mine were damaged, I would have returned mine, too. I am still not 100% certain they are not damaged but… Read more »
Knew this wasn’t going to end well – quantity minus quality = garbage
Congrats First-On-Thread – Your Silver optimism is acknowledged
I received the 2022 Uncirculated Mint Set last week and did not notice the four crimp marks until mentioned in the comments in a previous article. The packaging for the set I received had the marks that everyone is referencing. I have opened the packaging and removed all the coins. There was no damage to any of the coins. All coins included in the set are quite nice.
The US Mint recommends keeping all coins in the original packaging to retain full value and quality of product.
Just kidding, well not really,
Sorry to hear the US Mint has taken another victim
Yes, love that Mint packaging. Grade them, grade them all! Slabs are the only way to go.
No Antonio, No………………………………Damn them all to Hell
No, no, no, just no.
First thing I thought of when I read your post
Jiminy cricket.
BDP — I don;t know what you’ve got running thru your veins but you sure are a self-assured person. Sorry, but I don’t have the you-know-whats you do to do what you did. That said, I am very pleased your coins were not damaged. For what I could see on mine I thought they all looked good on the obverse and reverse. But it sure looked to me like the edges were crimped and damaged. But the Kennedy half looked almost proof-like. Many times the Original Government Packaging (OGP) is as important as the coin itself. So I’m not really… Read more »
BDP,
Thanks for confirming no damage to the coins. Even with the Mint saying there was no damage, it is nice (maybe crucial, in the Mint’s case) to get independent confirmation.
Kinda surprised to see the 2022-W Purple Heart Colorized Silver Dollar had sales loss of -511 coins (-2.05%) since it is a remarkable looking colorized silver coin. The color “purple” is the essence of the purple heart and attenuates the true, deep meaning of the coin. The “purple” heart accentuates the rest of the coin in a bold, conservative manner. I was very impressed with the one I received last week. The long 4 month period between pre-sale ordering and fullfillment /shipping of the orders can increase the likihood of cancellations and returns.
Flippers Failures and Buyers remorse – that 4 month holding period is a B and Finally, there was probably a lot of junk in there too
so why is ryder still signing all the new product COAs when he’s not even there?
does that mean they aren’t authentic? are they sending stuff to him to verify? or does it mean the COA isn’t really certifying anything? can I make my own COA since I don’t work at the mint either?
Many of my customers ask me to make up COA’s for their coins for a variety of reasons so it’s not unheard of.
The Ryder COA’s are just mass produced copies of his signature limited only to the amount of ink ink in the printer – he doesn’t even have to be there
Senza —
I totally agree with you with regard to the mass signature items. But I got 2 Ryder originals on my Colorized Basketball coins and they were so different (both in the amount of Sharpie Ink but also in the actual signatures) that they were real.
Problem is I don’t know whether they added or subtracted to the value of the coins. I can make a case for both ….
— Mike
mIKE
I’m a collector and I know the sharpie is a trusted tool and method of the trade – so you have value there and an authentic signature CONGRATS
Just noticed this while browsing Feebay – the asking price is $445.00 and indicates 1 sold and 4 more available
Reminds me of that saying ‘A fool and his money will soon part ways’
Reminds me of ME the day after a US Mint purchase
Mega Millions Jackpot is over $1 Billion – we could start our own Mint
First I want to say, auctions will no longer be out of range, should I win that jackpot.
