Platinum declined on Thursday while gold, silver and palladium gained. Gold’s increase was its second in a row after ending at a more than 29.5-month low on Tuesday.
Gold for December delivery climbed $5.40, or 0.3%, to settle at $1,681.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Gold futures traded between $1,663.30 and $1,693.50. They edged 0.3% higher on Wednesday, they lost 0.4% on Tuesday, for their lowest close since April 3, 2020, and they shed 0.3% on Monday.
"Short covering in the futures markets was featured in gold and silver today, following recent losses. Rising U.S. Treasury bond yields and a very strong U.S. dollar index did limit buying interest in the precious metals today," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Silver for December delivery tacked on 13.7 cents, or 0.7%, to close at $19.617 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $19.25 to $19.89. They rose 1.6% on Wednesday, they fell 0.9% on Tuesday, for their weakest close since Sept. 9, and they dipped 0.1% on Monday.
In other precious metals futures prices on Thursday:
-
October platinum lost $10, or 1.1%, to $906 an ounce, trading between $895.60 and $918.80.
- Palladium for December delivery jumped $51.50, or 2.4%, to $2,175 an ounce, ranging from $2,084 to $2,194.
