In precious metals Tuesday, gold and platinum climbed, rebounding from their lowest settlements this month, while silver and palladium declined for a third straight session.
Gold for December delivery rose $10.80, or 0.6%, to close at $1,686 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Gold prices are higher in midday U.S. trading Tuesday, on short covering in the futures market and some bargain hunting and/or safe-haven demand in the cash market. A weaker U.S. dollar index and pullback in U.S. Treasury yields on this day is also working in favor of the metals market bulls," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Gold futures traded between $1,667.50 and $1,691.30. They dropped 2% on Monday, marking their lowest finish since Sept. 30.
Silver for December delivery declined 12.8 cents, or 0.7%, to settle at $19.487 an ounce. The close was silver’s worst since Sept. 30. Silver futures ranged from $19.22 to $19.73. They plunged 3.2% on Monday
In other precious metals prices on Tuesday:
-
January platinum added $3.30, or 0.4%, to $899.10 an ounce, trading between $884.10 and $906.20. On Monday, platinum also logged its lowest finish since Sept. 30.
- Palladium for December delivery fell $17.50, or 0.8%, to $2,150.40 an ounce, ranging from $2,121 to $2,203.50. The finish was palladium’s weakest since Sept. 27.
