In futures trading Tuesday, palladium advanced for a second straight session while gold, silver and platinum gave back a portion of their prior-day gains.

Gold for December delivery shed $8.20, or 0.5%, to settle at $1,655.80 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"Gold and silver prices are lower in midday U.S. trading Tuesday, once again pressured by a higher-valued U.S. dollar on the foreign exchange market and by rising U.S. Treasury yields that see the benchmark 10-year note yield above 4.0%," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.

Gold futures traded between $1,650.60 and $1,666. They rose 0.9% on Monday

Silver for December delivery declined 11.9 cents, or 0.6%, to settle at $18.60 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $18.49 and $18.87. They rallied 3.6% on Monday.

In other precious metals futures Tuesday:

  • January platinum lost $6.30, or 0.7%, to $907.30 an ounce, trading between $902.40 and $925.10.

  • Palladium for December delivery added $14, or 0.7%, to $2,013.90 an ounce, ranging from $1,997.50 to $2,037.50.
