Precious metals kicked off the new trading week on Monday with losses that ranged from 0.1% for gold to 2.4% for palladium.
Gold for February delivery dipped $2.50 to settle at $1,797.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Gold and silver prices are a bit weaker in midday U.S. holiday-type trading Monday. Prices have traded both sides of unchanged today amid a quieter start to the trading week and as the holiday season begins. Traders are awaiting fresh fundamental inputs for the metals," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Gold futures traded between $1,793.20 and $1,808.60. They edged 0.6% lower last week. Last Tuesday, gold at $1,825.50 an ounce marked its best settlement since June 24.
Silver for March delivery declined 12.9 cents, or 0.6%, to end at $23.199 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $23.03 to $23.63. They gave back 1.6% last week. Last Wednesday, silver at $24.136 an ounce registered its best close since April 22.

January platinum lost $12.30, or 1.2%, to $987.70 an ounce, trading between $984.40 and $1,013.40.
- Palladium for March delivery fell $41.70 to $1,664.90 an ounce, ranging between $1,656.50 and $1,740.
Last week, platinum fell 3.5% and palladium dropped 13.3%.
