Precious metals climbed in their start to the new trading week on Tuesday after the long weekend with markets closed on Monday for the Christmas holiday. Their gains ranged less than 0.1% for platinum to 5.4% for palladium.
Gold for February delivery increased $18.90, or 1.1%, to settle at $1,823.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures traded between $1,808 and $1,841.90. They edged 0.2% higher last week.
Gold and silver prices rose, "boosted by chart-based buying and by two key outside markets are in a daily bullish posture for the precious metals — the U.S. dollar index is weaker and crude oil prices firmer," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Silver for March delivery climbed 29.7 cents, or 1.2%, to end at $24.217 an ounce. The settlement was the highest since last Tuesday, Dec. 20. Silver futures ranged from $23.97 to $24.50. They gained 2.5% last week.

April platinum inched higher by 10 cents, or 0.01% to $1,032.70 an ounce, trading between $1,014 and $1,047.60.
- Palladium for March delivery jumped $94.30 to $1,826.30 an ounce, ranging from $1,750 to $1,835.
Last week, platinum gained 3% and palladium rose 1.5%.
