Precious metals divided on Wednesday with gold and palladium rising and silver and platinum falling. Gold posted a nearly 7-month settlement high, and extended its winning streak to four in a row.
Gold for February delivery rose $12.90, or 0.7%, to settle at $1,859 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The finish was gold’s highest since ending at 1,875.50 an ounce on June 10.
"Safe-haven demand is featured so far this first trading week of 2023, amid shaky global stock markets and global economic growth worries. Bullish technical postures for gold and silver are also prompting more chart-based buying interest,” Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.
Gold futures traded between $1,842 and $1,871.30. They tacked on 1.1% in the start to the new trading week and year on Tuesday.
Silver for March delivery fell 27.2 cents, or 1.1%, to close at $23.964 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $23.74 to $24.64. They gained 0.8% on Tuesday.

April platinum dipped $1, or 0.09%, to $1,092.30 an ounce, trading between $1,086.90 and $1,112.10.
- After dropping 5.9% on Tuesday, palladium for March delivery rebounded $103.80, or 6.1%, to $1,796.70 an ounce. Palladium prices ranged from $1,705 to $1,805.50.
