Last week, the United States Mint introduced two product lines for collectors: Edith Kanakaʻole quarters and proof American Gold Eagles in four sizes and a set. New U.S. Mint sales figures show how many of these products were sold in their first few days.
The Edith Kanakaʻole quarter is the seventh issue from the Mint’s four-year series of coins honoring the achievements of American women. It was released on March 27 in rolls and bags, with prices ranging from $40 to $60.
Across the roll and bag products, Mint figures show combined sales of 2,328,400 coins, already making it the second-highest selling quarter in the series. For comparison:
- 2023 Bessie Coleman quarter debuted with sales of 2,745,380, now at 2,834,760
- 2022 Anna May Wong quarter started with sales of 1,740,120, now at 1,760,720
- 2022 Nina Otero-Warren quarter opened with sales of 1,720,160, now at 1,757,420
- 2022 Wilma Mankiller quarter debuted with sales of 1,738,440, now at 1,753,640
- 2022 Dr. Sally Ride quarters started with sales of 1,755,480, now at 1,756,780
- 2022 Maya Angelou quarters opened with sales of 1,753,280, now at 1,757,420
Each of the new Edith Kanakaʻole quarter products was among the Mint’s best weekly sellers. The three-roll set, which sold out within a few hours of release, led all products.
2023-W Proof Gold Eagle Sales
Released March 30 at prices ranging from $330 to $5,332.50, the new collection of proof Gold Eagles saw a combined 36,274 coins ordered within four days. In contrast, last year’s proof Gold Eagle products launched at the same prices and recorded combined sales of 54,222 coins during the same period.
Typically, the four-coin set sells the most units early on, but this year, the trend was different. The smallest coin sold the most initially, followed by the set.
To offer a better understanding of their sales performance, here’s a breakdown of their sales through Sunday by product option:

On Mar 18 there were a little over 467,000 in total across the board of the Morgan/Peace Dollar. Then they lifted the limit and the next two weeks they sold like hotcakes under subscription, down to under 110,000 available and it looked like they would sell out. Suddenly the last few days they are back to selling at a trickle. I guess the big boys have been able to order all they want at this point.
With over a million Morgans and Peace dollars sold and slated to be shipped, do you suppose the mint will be cleaver enough to start shipping before the catalog release date?
worse, if I, 2 days before the release date decide to cancel my order, then what? I had only wanted 1 coin but increased the preorder to 2 when things looked like they were going crazy. now I’m back to think I won’t order a 2nd coin of each – the plan had been too give to a relative.
ok, make it 4 days before. I think 3 days before the subscription ability disappears and if you subscribed the credit card sort of shows a pending transaction. But regardless, how much earlier can the mint ship, except for the big wigs who ordered great quantities, only to return a number that are by the eyeball method would not be ay least a 69.
A perceptive observation as usual Kaiser. Still it would be to their own disadvantage to undersell the price they paid. How does one manage a massive sales event like this?
Philosophers are going to philosophize and speculators are going to speculate. ‘No way are any of these Morgan or peace dollars going to be considered rare. The mint has come up with some issues far more popular than any of the commemoratives that congress has mandated for the mint to make. I suspect the other national mints are envious the the US mint sales.
Buy all you can. Do it again next year and the next. Then guess what. 2021 peace and morgan will be the rarest releases. Jackpot.
You are so right. These “tribute” Morgan & Peace dollars for 2023 are going to be so very common. You can buy “real” original common date Morgan & Peace dollars struck from 1878 to 1904 & 1921 to 1935 graded/slabed by PCGS or NGC for $80 or less! But, the Mint didn’t produce any in 2022 & the lower mintages of the 2021 issues which many were unable to get due to sellout, has created a FOMO situation for the 2023 issues. The big dealers are salivating at being able to offer these in 70 grade with all kinds of… Read more »
I am tempted to cancel all except 2 coin set. I passed on the silver quarters this year. And gold. Probably pass on palladium. Just not seeing anything special.
CURRENTLY ….SAME HERE
A good commemorative would be Vladimir Zworykin, known as the “father of television,” invents the iconoscope – an electronic camera tube used to scan an image. Think of what 100 years has brought us: We’ve gone from rudimentary television to cutting-the-cord, streaming channels with optional commercials. As many channels as magic mike is on, I mean that one exclusive channel he sells on, it would be a fitting tribute. Or could honor tuts tomb opening. Since it was loaded with gold. Knowing the mint they make a copper medal of it. Lol. Or they could stick with their woke theme… Read more »
Oh my gosh Seth, are you saying that even though the mint has explicitly said that the order coins are shipped has nothing to do with the order in which they are minted, and that grading services don’t provide certificates detailing what aspects of a coin it has excelled in, there are dealers that will charge a exorbitant prices for an coin with a label early release MS70, I am shocked.
Kia99,
Yep! I wish the U.S. Mint would issue that press release at least once a year. Unfortunately, the Mint’s public relations department isn’t as savy as the coin grading services & the wealthy coin dealers who promote such nonsense. The uninformed people get ripped off – sad, but true.
NumisdudeTX
Rest assured, the same company that handled the roll out of the obamacare website and the overhaul of the VA hospital website are on it. If anyone can handle it, it them
They won’t ship early. Perth mint finally got cleared of China claims of subpar purity in gold. Chase is done with the trial of spoofing. Well the 3 fall guys are anyway. When metal goes up prices skyrocket at mint almost immediately, or released at last minute what cost will be. But if metals fall, even by 50% it’ll take forever for the mint to drop price. So why ship 2 days early or whatever when they can add another 5 to 10 bucks per coin.
Kaiser, also check reply in the error coin story
Kaiser,
I remember when the U.S. Mint issued some commemorative coin sets in hard wood solid cherrywood presentation boxes. Of course, back then you could get a silver $1 coin for $29.95 & a $5 gold coin for around $200 in the 80s & 90s.
Good times!
NumisdudeTX
Seth, I bought the burnished 2006 ASE for $19.95 each! The proof ASE’s obviously would cost more. I’ve bought and stored (stacked) a lot of silver and gold coins from those “good times.”
I remember the 1996 Olympic box well. What a beauty!
