Quarter products honoring Edith Kanakaʻole practitioner, hula master, and champion of preserving and revitalizing traditional Hawaiian language, arts, and customs, saw sizable sales increases, according to the latest figures from the United States Mint.
Denver and Philadelphia bags of the quarters ranked second and third highest, respectively, in U.S. Mint weekly sales, with each experiencing a rise of over 2,000 units, totaling more than 415,000 quarters. The gains were bolstered by events held in Hawaii last week to commemorate the release of the Edith Kanakaʻole quarter, capitalizing on the already strong sales made early following the quarter’s debut.
Overall, roll and bag products containing the coin now account for 2,918,140 quarters.
As the seventh and most recent release in the Mint’s four-year series honoring the achievements of American women, the Edith Kanakaʻole quarter has become the highest-selling quarter in the series, propelled by these latest gains. The rankings and corresponding sales totals are as follows:
- Edith Kanakaʻole quarters at 2,918,140
- Bessie Coleman quarters at 2,867,160
- Anna May Wong quarters at 1,760,720
- Nina Otero-Warren quarters at 1,757,500
- Maya Angelou quarters at 1,757,660
- Dr. Sally Ride quarters at 1,756,780
- Wilma Mankiller quarters at 1,753,640

Still haven’t come across one of these.
Many were shipped to her native homeland of Hawai’i & the rest are at PCGS & NGC getting graded! (Momma is praying for a MS-68). Lol.
NumisdudeTX
is this like the first time we’ve had the denomination on a US coin written with actual numerals (25) rather than with words (one cent, one dime, quarter dollar, etc.)?
and no I don’t count roman numerals either (liberty nickel’s V reverse)
The first U.S. Mint quarter dollar coins with
“25 C.” on them were the Draped Bust quarters of 1804-1807 & the Capped Bust quarters of 1815-1838.
NumisdudeTX
ah ok thanks, I don’t have any of those in my collection, they are a bit on the pricey side for me. still that’s almost 200 years which is a pretty long time to go without a numeric denomination
Hawaii only has 16 letters in their alphabet. Q is not a letter. So quarter dollar wouldn’t be possible.
that would make sense for this design, but I’m also wondering why the US typically don’t use arabic numerals on coins like most other countries do. makes it hard for the foreign tourists
I was noticing the jovita idar quarter being unusual with all the usual required coin verbiage worked into the art itself. i’m sure once they go into circulation someone will complain about it and it will cause a big fuss
c-q,
You sure are right about that. I love the design of the Idar quarter, but the obverse looks more like an art medal or token & the denomination is “hiding” inside the design. Most cashier’s at stores will not know what the heck this coin is…
NumisdudeTX
the design of the jovita idar coin is one of the best and most innovative the us mint has adopted in years. if someone doesn’t realize this is a washington quartrer — hint: there’s a portrait of washington on the flip side — then we’ve got a real serious problem. of course, all this assumes that people are aware that it’s washington on a washington quarter.
morgan,
Believe it or not, many people still do not know Lincoln is on the 1-cent coin since 1909…sad but true.
NumisdudeTX
for the record i’m sure >99.9% of people will recognize it as a quarter without issue, probably because most people barely glance at their change to notice anything unusual. but a few will notice it and most of them will say something along the lines of ‘hey that’s neat’. but there will be a few who will be upset about it being ‘not normal’ and then complain about it enough that it could become a PR problem for the mint, and then the mint will have to apologize and promise not to do anything too ‘unusual’ like that again, and… Read more »
Major D,
It is indeed the “dead presidents” side of our current 5 denominations of circulating coins that is the obverse of the coins.
Fun fact: On the China Mint’s popular annual panda bullion coins, the panda design is the reverse (with a new design each year) – the obverse is the date/temple side.
NumisdudeTX
I couldn’t agree more Sir Kaiser! Unfortunately there are quite a few complainers out there who will take any opportunity to vent and bitch about anything under the sun.
Sir Kaiser, I think you misunderstood my comment. In fact, I was in agreement with you regarding your reply to Major D, who was registering a complaint and you questioned his frivolous complaint. I must also say that I have NEVER questioned your intentions. As for claiming that “this kind of response” has occurred on “all too many occassions,” what are you talking about? I have treated you with the utmost respect, not to mention being in agreement with you 95% of the time. Let’s all of us chill.
Sir Kaiser, thank you for your most eloquent response. Your detailed and most thorough explanation is most heartedly received and appreciated. Yes, we are on the same page apparently. As you know, Sir Kaiser, I do not post comments frequently, only when something strikes me in a way that I must respond. Thank you again for all your sentiments and the excellent comments that make this site so very entertaining. You seem to be the backbone and principal player to keep things interesting as well as educational. Stay well my learned friend!
