2023-P Uncirculated Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars Launching

136

Undoubtedly, two of the most anticipated coins in the United States Mint line-up this year are making their debut today at noon ET with the release of the 2023-P Uncirculated Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars.

Production is limited to 275,000 each, and orders are restricted to 25 coins per household during the initial 24-hour sales period. Each dollar is produced at the Philadelphia Mint, struck in .999 fine silver, and continues the century-old program that was reintroduced two years ago with six different coins.

Morgan and Peace Dollar Designs

Both coins bear historical imagery taken from their 19th and 20th century counterparts.

The designs of the Morgan silver dollar were created by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan (1845-1925) and were originally featured on coins issued by the U.S. Mint from 1878 to 1904, with a reissue in 1921. The obverse (heads side) features a profile of Liberty, adorned with a cap, flora, and a crown incused with the word ‘LIBERTY.’ Surrounding the figure are 13 stars, ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,’ and ‘2023’.

The reverse side (tails) of the coin depicts an eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch. Below the eagle, there is a wreath. The reverse inscriptions include ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,’ ‘IN GOD WE TRUST,’ and ‘ONE DOLLAR’.

Designed by the renowned Italian-American sculptor Anthony de Francisci (1887-1964), the Peace silver dollar replaced the Morgans in 1921. The obverse features a profile of Liberty wearing a radiant crown. Inscriptions include ‘LIBERTY,’ ‘IN GOD WE TRUST,’ and ‘2023’.

The reverse of the dollar features an eagle at rest, holding an olive branch above the inscription ‘PEACE.’ Additional inscriptions include ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,’ ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM,’ and ‘ONE DOLLAR’.

Should be interesting to see how the The Waiting Room at the mints sight will be.

Roger

I got in the waiting room for both coins to see how long the wait would be but at noon was instantly allowed to purchase. I already had one each by subscription so I immediately exited.

Allan

Just like 2021 two today, two next month and two later this year. Hope the mint online can handle it and I hope we don’t have to wait months for delivery to start. I hope everyone gets what they want this time.

Seth Riesling

The Mint is selling these Morgan & Peace silver dollars today at their booth at the Florida United Numismatists convention in Orlando & the Mint’s 3 gift shops (Washington DC, Philadelphia & Denver).

This is new. Two orders (placed a long time ago via subscription) … dated July 10.
Next shipment? Changed this week from July 13 … to TBD.
No CC charges, yet.
TBD? What’s up?

TBD is for next year. 2024

Allan

it means, To Be Determined, a future unknown date. For me, if my CC has not been charged, I would join the 12 noon event, what you do though is up to you.

Adam L

I ordered 3 each. My Debit card shows pre authorization for the total amount.

Major D, I ended up cancelling my subscriptions. The processing delay was real. Weird as I watched posts about peeps getting their coins. Anyway, during the delay at my end, I also got an email to call them… that the same CC I use was not working or something. I got through to customer service promptly. I said, “just cancel” the (long) “processing” order. I like these silver dollars, but wasting time on processes (trying to buy) is getting old. Not just mint. Incorrect DoorDash deliveries, delayed Lyft drives, etc.. Plus, another 800,000 better-quality proof versions will be available soon.… Read more »

tried to get on 10 minutes early because never got an email showing purchase. waited in waiting room for about 3 minutes after sale began. was not able to see how many were left. i know data available no longer works, so just put available and cycled through,m could not find the number. when i click on order history it did not show my info because of the traffic. when i check the subscription it did not show my subscriptions. so checked my card and it showed 2 pending charges from 07/10/23. i presume i will get them but i… Read more »

My pending cc is all I got I guess. Like I said order history was unavailable and said should be back up in 24 hours, and under subscription there wasn’t anything listed, just red lettering. No email saying order processed. Only way other than cc would be call the mint, but as I learned, if I can’t see it, neither can they. It is what it is. What is the new phrase to check availability? Use to be data- available.

Craig

Kaiser,

I received the e-mails for all of my subscriptions that were charged to my CC on Monday. Received shipping notice for the same a couple hours ago. Maybe they know who butters their bread, no? Lol. I have to give credit to the mint for that as I’ve always received timely notification from the mint via e-mails.

Rooster

Last week I took a couple dozen off the table. I am not alone.

Rooster

Could set up for a lower final mintage but we have a long way to go yet. They may have punched out too many of both. Time will tell.

Dino

The 2023 Peace and Morgan are both sold out.

I think triple h is already trademarked

Seth Riesling

There was so little traffic on the Mint’s website for these silver dollars, that the Mint removed the Waiting Room just 30 minutes after noon. Probably because almost everyone had a subscription to these & didn’t need to get on their website.
And, they are available for purchase in person today at the FUN coin show & convention in Orlando, Florida at the Mint’s booth on the bourse floor & at the Mint’s 3 gift shops (Washington DC, Philadelphia & Denver).

Seth Riesling

Major D,

That is so true & a great thing for everyone for sure. It will be interesting to see just how long it takes for these two coin options to sell out.

NumisdudeTX

Seth Riesling

Kaiser,

Yes indeed, more people are using the subscription option for products than ever before (the Mint used to call the option “Enrollments”).

NumisdudeTX

Antonio

Maybe that was the point of the fiasco of 2021. I subscribed based on comments I read here and everything has been going smoothly this year. Got my confirmation of my Morgan and Peace Dollars shipped and should see them at my home shortly. I look forward to the Peace Dollars, which have always been my favorite.

Seth Riesling

Antonio,

Yes indeed, this time worked great for sure. My Morgan dollars come in the mail tomorrow & my Peace dollars come on Monday. Excited to see if they look as nice as the 2021 ones I was lucky to get.

NumisdudeTX

Roger

My Peace dollar got to KC an hour before the Morgan and now shows Saturday delivery. Hopefully the Morgan will catch up with it.

Antonio

Received my 2023 uncirculated Morgan Dollar yesterday. It looks like the original Morgan Dollar design rather than a contemporary reproduction. Did the Mint do some die tweeking? It looks like it to me. Looks very nice and I hope everyone is as pleased as I am. Another thing, I can take the coin out of the box and not use a crowbar as I’ve had to do in the past. I don’t actually use a crowbar, of course, they’ve been difficult to remove from the box backing and this one was easily removed.

Jeff K

Order history is down due to high volumes. Ordered 1 of each, will wait and see how this goes…

my order history showed 2 days ago. again, really nice thing about the subscription.

The Mint’s website now shows these two coins are “currently unavailable” with the blue remind me button. I don’t believe for a minute that they are anywhere near a sellout yet.

I just got an email with the tracking # for 1 of my 5 subscriptions.

Seth Riesling

Major D,

Yes, the Mint is known for slow/inaccurate accounting sometimes, but it seems they are handling it in a cautious manner.

NumisdudeTX

Dazed and Coinfused

The deep pockets probably scooped up all they could afford. 1 to put on ebay to see how many they can sell for quick profit before demand wanes and return the rest for refund at no loss. 2. To corner market and get as many ms70 as they think they can and return the rest for quick refund. 3. To check for possible errors and return for refund.

The question I have is, will these be more collectible as they are first ones that don’t weigh full ounce.

Dazed and Coinfused

Ok. Not first non ounce coin. So I suppose they are exactly as the original peace and morgan. Since they were solid silver. Anywho. Should be interesting to see how it fares years from now.

Antonio

These’ll be %99.99 silver. In the future, I may discontinue with the ASEs and buy these instead, especially if the mintages of the ASEs continue to rise. Anyway I prefer how the Morgans and Peace Dollars look over the ASEs appearance.

Rooster

I have thought the same but will still get the ASE’s however fewer of them.

Seth Riesling

I just got an email from the Mint that my orders are now in the “Shipped” status (which means a mailing label & packing slip has been printed out at the Mint’s private vendor fulfillment warehouse in Memphis).

NumisdudeTX

Craig

Seth,

Are all of the mailing/packing labels printed out of Memphis? My shipping confirmation e-mail states my order has left the Coppell, Texas Distribution Center. That doesn’t sound like an efficient supply chain if one has to wait for the labels to arrive before anything can depart the facility. I would assume each Distribution Center creates their own labels. Of course, this is the government…

Seth Riesling

Craig,

For some strange reason, at some point during the pandemic, the Mint started shipping some items from Texas. The emails I got that my coins are in the “shipped” status show that my Peace silver dollars are shipping from Memphis & my Morgan silver dollars are shipping from Coppell, Texas. I’m in Austin, Texas, so I wish they all shipped from the Texas warehouse. The company that runs the Mint’s warehouse in Memphis also runs the Mint’s customer service center in Texas.

NumisdudeTX

Roger

I wonder if they only use the TX site when they are shipping multiple Mint items the same day to speed handling. The shipping time from both locations is the same for me in KC.

Seth Riesling

Roger,

Probably, and both Memphis, TN & Coppell, TX (a suburb of Dallas & near DFW international airport) are basically in the middle of the country for even distribution purposes & are near major airports. (FedEx has its world headquarters in Memphis).

It will be interesting to see if the same split occurs for the proof versions August 9th.

Antonio

Mine are all coming from TN.

Domenic Vaiasicca

Just got my text mssgs and emails that my subscriptions shipped!

Craig

I see the Morgan/Peace Dollars are all sold. If you didn’t get yours yet, just wait until the ‘Big Boys’ return those that don’t grade out. I received notice that mine have shipped so keep your eyes on those mailboxes.

Darkesmoke

Very pleasant experience. The subscription option worked beautifully. In fact, yesterday my bank posted a “transaction pending” from the US Mint for two coins of each variety, so I know it would go through. A tip: some issuers, (Chase and Wells Fargo come to mind) will randomly “deny” a purchase, texting if it wa “you” who made the transaction. This could happen when buying from the Mint using a credit card for the first time. To avoid losing time, call the issuing bank a few days in advance and ask them to post a note stating a transaction from the… Read more »

Jeff K

Ugh, just found out that my Morgan subscription (which I signed up for on 7/11) was not in the 3 day window, so I missed out. Could have gotten in the Queue this morning if I had known. Oh well! already sub’d for the proof coins, so we’ll see how it goes…

Rooster

Did you sign up for the reminder? I’m sure they will open up again to order.

Domenic Vaiasicca

Sadly you waited too long on subscription…..many of us got them as soon as offered.

Dazed and Coinfused

You have to sign up much farther in advance, the 3 days before sale only refers to cancelation or changes to order before they charge your card. I did mine over a year ago so details are fuzzy, but I think it’s 30 days prior to sale, I’ve only done this as a subscription so not much experience setting up a subscription. You said you signed up on 11th, but mint charged card on the 10th. So you were late to the party

Dazed and Coinfused

Does it include holidays and weekends?

I could have sworn I saw something that said more than 3 days prior to sign up, but as I said, that was over a year ago and was my first and only enrollment or subscription.

But I did say I wasn’t sure. And I always encourage people to trust but verify.

Kate

For safety I had an enrollment for today so both my coins have shipped. However I gave it a try and was able to order another one of each before they sold out in 45 minutes for the Morgan and an hour later for the Peace. The purchase process was very easy. I just received notice that my Peace was accepted but the Morgan was back ordered! Glad I had the safety net of the enrollment.

Craig

‘Which is more likely to happen next year?’…I’d say neither! Unless you’re talking about slabbed coins with a 70 grade. With 275,000 of the Unc. Morgans/Peace Dollars minted, there will be a plethora of sites offering them for sale and these sites will want to move them. I might be wrong, but I think the price will be static for years, unless the Mint ceases production of both series or if the spot price of Ag suddenly spikes to all time highs.

Seth Riesling

Major D,

Check out the prices on the 2021-D Morgan silver dollar in MS-70 slabbed by PCGS or NGC…very few are grading 70 due to poor quality at the Denver Mint on that coin and some dealers are asking $1000+ !

NumisdudeTX

Dazed and Coinfused

If I recall, wasn’t there a lot of people complaining about damaged coins and sent them back for the 2021 Peace and Morgan’s even though chance of getting a replacement was small. My guess flippers looking for ms70 only to maximize profit while the blood still fresh in the water. True collectors would know that these are cornerstone and highly anticipated and even with relatively high mintage wouldn’t return because they know it’ll pay out in long run no matter the condition. Also with the mintage numbers the 2021 Morgan’s came from several mints and peace was a single issue.… Read more »

Craig

Major D, I see APMEX is offering the 2023 Unc. Morgans/Peace for $109.99. The FOMO always brings in the suckers on sites like this. We’ll see after the hype fades what the market will demand. With an extra 100,000 minted over the 2021’s, I just don’t see the price stabilising at $150. Hell, you had almost a year to secure one of these, via subscription, and yet they were still available on opening day. The 2021’s each sold out in about 20 minutes and that was with a HOL of three! I hope you’re right, as I now own them, but… Read more »

Mint charged my card on file for my subscription for these two coins on the 10th. Mint informed me the morning of the 13th that coins are shipped 🙂

Rooster

Hey Chris! How you doing? Good judging from your comment. Gotta love those subscriptions.

Tom

I received a note saying the Morgan Dollar has been shipped, but nothing yet on the Peace (though I have been billed for both)
Jokingly I say, I guess I can claim my Morgan is a ‘first day’ but not the Peace.
yeh, right, nobody actually knows when the coins were struck. certainly all this was done months ago

Dazed and Coinfused

Fake news Brandon. We all know those Morgan’s and peace available at the Orlando coin show were freshly pressed in a van in the parking lot. Blasphemy I say. Those at the show got theirs today, guess you can say they cut more lines than hunter biden

Chris Terp

Didn’t Mike Mezack press these last year to actually be on the centennial? And you get a better presentation box 😉

Chris Terp

I hope you get notification quickly Tom on your Peace Dollar shipment.

Will be reassuring news to start your weekend that both are on there way to you.

Tom

didn’t get the shipping e mail on the Peace dollar until last night.
According to shipping, I am supposed to get the Peace Dollar Saturday and the Morgan on Monday.

Chris Terp

Yep Rooster, the subscription was easy peasy.

Wonder if these will be pressed again next year?

Rooster

Chris I am hoping they will.

Chris Terp

Great! Will enjoy seeing that.

Rooster

Chris: Can you believe a year has gone by since you mentioned the subscriptions for these coins? Now we have them in hand. Thanks again!

Deep pockets are the ones that take the max, plus able to pay over asking and overnight shipping to many many others to buy their 25 coins, many times over. That fdoi really adds to the markup and is hard to do without overnight shipping, and I’m sure they don’t pay asking price. Maybe they can’t pry all 25 from buyers, but you know there is a network. And Deep pockets would be adding several thousand more coins. Also. Maybe these coins show unavailable because they don’t know how many didn’t sell at the shows that kept getting mentioned in… Read more »

Kaiser, Instead of constantly complaining about the rich, why didn’t you learn from them and implement a strategy to make your family rich, or at least richer. I’m not jealous of anyone who has a net worth of millions or billions, as for the most part, they earned what they have. I did a lot of research, learned about the stock market, started a business, and with hard work and discipline now have more funds than I ever thought I’d have when I was young. But.. most of the rich are rich through business. Like musk. Even though he comes from money, the gubmint paid for all his endeavors. Win or lose. Until recently, unless you were worth 1 million bucks excluding your home, you couldn’t get in on ground floor deals, I’ve seen ton of things on early shark tank episodes I wanted to put money in, but not worth enough to do so. By the time they go public you’ll need years to get money back and make profit. Even so, if their business fails, their personal credit didn’t take a hit, and… Read more »

Side question for everyone. Is their such a thing as a collector book for encapsulated coins where the coin stays encapsulated and not opened from its mint container? Say you want to get all the Morgans in a new book to continue a collection WITHOUT opening them?

Roger

Not that I’m aware of. The closest are the CAPS albums for Air-tite capsules but the Mint capsules won’t fit in the Morgan/Peace albums.

https://www.valleycoin.com/supplies-books-cd-dvd-s/coin-albums-and-folders/caps-album-products.html

You might find a blank page intended for a larger size air-tite that could work.

The album page with the largest capsule size I’m aware is one for Air-tite I size with a Maximum outside capsule diameter of 51mm. What is the diameter of a Mint capsule?

They will fit this  ENCAP44/45 page from lighthouse. CAPS and Lighthouse both sell blank albums and slip covers that will fit the pages.

At 10 pm I got my morgan ship notice. So 9 hours between first order and second order. But at least I got both. Watching hsn2 and deep pocket magic mike. He showing a 1922 or 23 peace dollar. Says 90% silver in the panel. But he says in his pitch they are solid silver. I even took pic with closed caption on. And it said solid silver. I thought solid meant 100%. Guess with bidenomics 90% is the new solid

Oh dear. I was able to order 2023 Morgan and Peace dollar, one each, this morning and the email confirmation was sent at 12:01 (1 minute after release). Or they might be ‘banking’ on returned coins sold to those that only want MS70 graded slabs (Magic Mike and the ilk) to come back into stock.

Kate

Yup, I now have a confirmation it was mailed. Thanks for the heads up.

Federico Hernandez Becerra

Did the Morgan and the peace dollars 2023 was sold.

Antonio

They look sold out, all 275,000 of each. It’s returns or from dealers now.

Dazed and Coinfused

another possibility. People that ordered 25 and scared to change their order amount and returning to mint in unknown condition because finances are way different than a year ago. So slight chance you can still get a good one.

Antonio

My Morgan, which I received yesterday, looks nicer than the 2021 ones. I may be biased but it looks like the original Morgan Dollars to me. It’s possible the Mint refined its dies. It’s a nice looking uncirculated one. I have yet to have it graded.

victor

Well. I got 2 each of the Morgan and Peace yesterday afternoon. This morning I see Peace were available again so I ordered another 2. Just my 2 cents.

Rooster

Victor: That’s nice to have them in hand on the day of issue. Seth earlier mentioned the coin show in Orlando having them and also at three of the mints stores. I am expecting my coins on Monday.

victor

In Michigan, there are never any shows unfortunately. Mine haven’t shipped yet. Maybe I will sign up for subscription to get my coins sooner.

Rooster

Misunderstood you. Thought you actually had them. Yes definitely subscribe.

Test comment. No longer have old email address, trying to rejoin board with new email address.

Dave

Well, just rec’d my Morgan’s today – what a disappointment – ordered 3 of them. 1 had spots all over the coin, the other was all scratched up.
At least they providing a free label to ship them back.

Kate

Interesting, both my first coins had tons of black threads all over the capsule (box lining?). The Morgan has an interesting indented feature just outside the rim across from the nose that I swear looks like a Star Trek communication badge. I assume that is not going to be a 70 LOL. Now waiting for the extra two I got on order day.

Mike Petraitis

So who was lucky enough to purchase the complete set of the 2021 Morgan and Peace dollars when they went on sale?Do you think it is worth paying $1200 for the 2021 set.Give me your honest opinion.

Rooster

Mike: That price trend is holding. The love for the Morgan and Peace run deep. The privy mark from New Orleans and Carson City IMO has a lot to do with that premium. Doubtful those privy marks will ever return. If not owning them I would be tempted but would probably restrain from buying at that price. I have not been looking but is it cheaper to buy individually and build your own set?

Roger

APMEX is selling just five of the coins (minus D) for $1300 so in todays market $1200 for all six seems like a deal.

Check https://www.usacoinbook.com/ to see what others are asking for individual coins.

The only complete set offer I found is $1375. I probably would not pay that much but then I already have them at Mint prices.

Well. To be fair. $99 for a 76 coin slabbed ain’t bad. You know what grade you got. You don’t risk getting a dud from the mint or.a bad run, and it is close to what it would cost you from the mint and to grade. Now granted you don’t grade yours, but you can smash the case and admire it naked (the coin, not you… well you can be too but that’d be kinda weird) at its finest. But I give it to you. Decades (I’d wager almost a half century) of collecting and only 1 coin ever purchased… Read more »

Received my Morgan today. Like the Peace dollar I received Saturday, less than perfect as the Peace has a slight scuff / scratch and 3 tiny rim dings on the obverse while the Morgan has a slight scuff /scratch above the wing on the reverse. Not thrilled with the quality of either of them but I am happy I at least have one example of each for my collection. At the premiums we pay, I expect better. Dave

really disapointed in the quality. there is just something about these coins that I just don’t like, but I bought them anyway. I collect the original Morgans & Peace $$. Maybe that’s why I don’t care for them. I even sold off all of the 2021 Morgan’s & Peace $ I had. Probably do the same with these.
Hope the proofs are better

Roger

I’m not thrilled with the finish the mint chose for the modern version but I have all of the original Morgan & Peace dollars and there is no way I could not add these to my collection.
