I just looked, the next innovation dollar (for release Aug 28) shows only 6 of the 25 roll D mint left under subscription and only 73 P mint mark.
The 25 coin roll seem to be a bit of a hit at the moment.
On the other hand, sales of the silver proof set slowed way down, although those purchased under subscription still ahead of last year’s amount under subscription.
3 weeks until the proof Morgan and Peace. looks like plenty still available under subscription. I thought they had been ‘sold’ out, but I guess people have cancelled big orders
Yet somehow with so many open subs, both sold out in under an hour last week. Well, still a couple thousand unaccounted for according to the headline numbers. And despite many posts of subpar coins, not many have said they would return and are happy to have them. Except for Major D and his comment below about not sure about return despite the mars and scratches. Even still, not so bad as to warrant a definitive Karen moment of let me speak to your manager I wanna refund. Perhaps best route is to max your sub to 25. Sort em… Read more »
One in her hand is not as good as one in her bush. I think that is how it goes
Kaiser,
Lol. They found a lost tribe of Bush Women in the Amazon rainforest & gave them all razors & shaving cream & now they are centerfold models in the porn magazines…
NumisdudeTX
And money pits
Beards and mustaches
Also, notice the statue of liberty has no armpit hair. Perhaps before Gillette marketed razors to women they used torches to singe it off.
But what if your coin identifies as an ms70
Might be a lot of returns, but from what I understand not many morgan or peace from 100 years ago grade over 60. So a 67 68 or 69 from 2023 would be more detail and brilliance without toning and look closer to what the original did. Or they will end up in a hoard and presented 100 years from now on hsn by magic mike the 5th as AU or BU coins
I have to disagree on the proof coins. Being that Proofs of either original coin runs are expensive i think they will have much demand even at 400,000 each.
Mine look fine. Probably MS68. I see no issues with them.
“It took one month to sell 400,000 W-Proof ASEs”….that’s just it….an older series. These proof Morgans and Peace will be the first in a hundred years. I’m still hedging an early sell out.
After my issues with the Uncirculated versions, I also have cut back my future orders significantly. I can’t imagine it’s anything other than that. The mint had 2+ years to get these right and instead shipped out damaged and dirty coins. I’m very upset.
I saw what appeared to be damage on the Peace dollar in a then-tweet on July 10, 2023 from the U.S. Mint. that featured Director Ventris Gibson. Post still public. I cancelled subscription.
Closer look. Both coins.
Mine already went back – ordered 3 – 2 were spotted & heavily scratched
I’m done with these- a lot of hype for nothing. I’ll stick to the old Morgans
just cancelled the proofs too – had enough
Would be nice for Y’all to do a story about Quality issues with the new Morgan/Peace Dollars. I ordered 3 each of the Uncirculated versions on subscription. I received the 3 Morgan’s first, red threads/lint on the inside of ALL THREE of them. I haven’t really seen anything else on those, but I’m a lamen and casual collector as well. Then I recieved the 3 Peace Dollars and 1 of them had a HUGE gash/knock on the front of the coin. I louped it at first, hoping that it was just more lint, but alas no. So now I’m returning… Read more »
I’m of the opinion, only my opinion, that the favored dealers got their hands on coins first, returned those they weren’t happy with and us collectors/investors got what they returned. I didn’t see any issues with my coins but I have serious doubts that any will be graded higher than MS68. It pays to be rich and have connections.
The Peace Dollars look good – the Quality of the Morgans is terrible
See my comment/photo above. My Peace were messed up and my Morgans were “fine” just had lots of red lint inside them.
Back in the day, red hairs in your weed meant it was primo. Mayne you got an ms71 or XI coin. Roman numeral 11, not the guy that signs Bidens paycheck
My Morgan is good. I suppose it’s because I only ordered one. I’ve only ever had an issue with ONE coin, it was a 1996-W dime, a finger print on it.
You took the words right out of my mouth as that is exactly my opinion as well. Far too many issues to date from regular collectors like us who ordered directly from the mint.
I bought only one of each this time and each were less that perfect. I based my opinion on what I received and by simply reading and observing comments on different articles and threads on the issue. I am not convinced it is limited to the Morgans, although so far perhaps the Peace dollars to a lesser degree. My suspicion is like in every other industry, production schedule pressures and the shortage of qualified employees mixed in with providing the big boys first dibs at the products. I am very curious about what other collectors have experienced with this product… Read more »
Hi Kaiser Wilhelm,
Your comment led me to momentarily daydream about the Mint grading and encapsulating whole or partial production runs and then selling them at various price points matching the grade the coins received. The Mint would then be able to capture some of the profits for themselves that the grading companies exclusively capture now.
It was only a momentary daydream, but I do not see either of those as unsolvable problems. I do not see an issue with the Mint guaranteeing the grade. Any craftsman will do the same for their own work, why not the Mint? And it is not like the graders do not have a conflict of interest of their own. I thought they tend to grade high to please their customers. As far as errors go, you just make a rule and follow it. They can make sure no errors ever leave the Mint again or they can grade them… Read more »
However, if the mint grades and retains the errors, that kind of ruins the hunt for collectors. The ones that search rolls, or pound bags of junk silver for those unicorns. It isn’t like 40 years ago when only those interested knew of the rare. Inherited coins would be bulk sold, or pawned. Not many would buy a book and go through effort to find rarities and treasures. Or send in for grading. Heck even I haven’t bought a red or blue book. Now you just click a coin, ai checks, and tells you what it is and worth. People… Read more »
So I have to amend my previous statement to “The only losers here would be the current grading companies (though I assume at least one would win the contract to grade for the Mint. We contract out everything now), the error hunters, and the bulk dealers.“. The error hunters could still hunt for old errors, but there would be no need to even look at coins dated after the program started. I thought about the angle of no more chance for a perfect coin for me, but also no more chance of a defective coin. I did not remember the… Read more »
Oddly enough if no errors ever made and only perfect 70s populate, only need for graders would be old coins and counterfeit testing. But sales show even avid collectors are buying ms68 and ms69 from hsn or other Avenues day of or shortly after release. Also if they were all identical, It would lose appeal to many. Most people want something different, to stand out. That’s why they hunt errors. That’s why they pay extra for fdoi or advance release. The process for mint perfection has come a long way, but still has bad days. Can you imagine if the… Read more »
Or mint them all, grad3 them all and only slab 70. Destroy the rest. And first ordered gets it, rest go to APs. But then cries of artificial rarity and 70s tossed to reduce population.
Does the Mint QC rely on humans to visually examine these coins?
There are well developed technologies used by industry using cameras to detect/reject flawed product which it seems could be employed to detect the problems being found by collectors.
The only issue for the Mint would be what to do with the rejects. But that might also push them to improve their processes to reduce flawed coins.
Yes they do. They always have people assigned to check coin production examples. At what frequency is unknown to me but I would hope these “special” edition products more frequently than common circulation coins.
I believe they hired Ray Charles, Ronnie Millsap, and Stevie Wonder as QC and work from home
Thanks you too sir. I enjoy the feedback, thoughts and opinions on this site. 60 years collecting and always learning.
You are welcome, Kaiser Wilhelm. I thank you right back for your consistent, welcoming, and encouraging presence on this site. The same presence that made me feel comfortable enough to post my first comment here many years ago.

And thank you too, for without others I would have no sounding board to bounce ideas, theories, stories, and get under the skin content. And love or hate it, it does open a pathway for discussions no matter how taboo they may be.
My response to that is if the mint won’t even name the privileged buyers, I am certain that they have special arrangements and tolerate many more returns from them than they would otherwise tolerate from us mere minions. I have never returned a coin because I believe even if I did, I may not get a replacement and even if I were lucky enough to get one, I believe I would simply get one that was already rejected by the big boys. That Mint knows that and that is by design. How many folks buy the maximum allowed per household… Read more »
You’ll get what we give you and you’ll like it. I have only bought from mint since about 2016. I don’t know anyone else that collects coins (I got my sister to get a couple for me and some she kept but she isn’t die hard about it). From that time I recall release day limits to be 1 or 3. Usually 1. And not all the coins selling out day of (very few did, mostly bots that picked up the ultra rare) so 24 hours later it was buy all ya want. Also. With the waiting room. What is to stop them from keeping collectors in the rear of the line and giving the scalpers front of line woke disney fast pass. Maybe that’s the Mar on your coins, Mike and company got their greasy mitts on em. Scalpers sending enforcers to volunteer to grade their purchases
AFTER reading all the negative comments, I thought maybe I was just happy to get one of each, and looked at them through “rose colored glasses”. so just re-opened both boxes, and nope , they look flawless, and in ideal condiition
I bought 3+3. The Morgans are all scratched on the reverse rims and Peace are possibly (maybe) 70’s. Hey USMint, howz about tuning up the presses? Returned 4 of 6.
My Peace is damaged, see my post/pic above. I’m sending back 33% of both. Thinking of canceling the proofs and pulling back on the RP’s. I don’t know ANY way to let the mint know that we’re not standing for this than to return bad QC back to them. That’s the only way.
Hi Major D, First question that comes to my mind after reading that is: Has the Mint ever suspended any accounts for excessive returns? Second is: What are the return rates for all those “trusted vendors” they allow to make bulk purchases before regular people can even place an order? That is how it is set up, isn’t it? I seem to recall that they get to purchase some percentage of the stock before it is even available to the rest of us or did I get that wrong? The return policy sounds good on paper (If a little vague.… Read more »
Kaiser,
True, and now we know why the U.S. Mint & its Director Madame Ventris C. Gibson refuses to release the names of the 18 coin dealers who are in the Mint’s Authorized Bulk Purchase Program & get 10% of the limited mintage of each product & can pick them up in Memphis at the warehouse 3 days before they are offered to the public.
A shameful, unfair & reeks of cronyism program Madame Gibson!

Magic Mike proudly proclaims he is one of the privileged 18 which gives some idea of the scruples involved with at least some people allowed to participate. If more of the 18 are hucksters, I can see why the Mint might not want to tarnish their brand by releasing a list.
Mike is a limited edition. He is 1 of 18. If he mints himself at fiji mint with his exclusive label and grades out ms70, but you can only get him in a pine box.
I don’t think they make red oak coffins. But maybe for him they will.
If I was musk, I’d have a hard time deciding which was cooler, top down blasting the same song on a loop with a suit on or; wearing whatever and cruising around in a rocket for all eternity. To a spaceship a rocket would be more of a motorcycle. Add a sidecar and a Shiba Inu and the alien women may love him for his cool dog. Unless they are crazy cat women. I don’t know why I said crazy., commonly known in the unibidimultiverse that all women are crazy. So… just a cat woman. I will make an exception… Read more »
Just watched Magic Mike on an HSN show from June 26th in which he said he represented two of the 18 dealers.
He was already hawking 2023 ANACS MS70 Advance Release Morgans for $250 of which he claimed to already have 676. An obvious lie as when they showed a closeup of the slab which said 2023 the coin inside was a 2021 Morgan.
On July 16th he was pitching 2023 PCGS MS70 Advance Release Morgans for $300 claiming to have only 200.
On his Peace dollar pitch on July 16th he claims to represent 3 of the 18 dealers and have 676 2023 ANACS MS70 Advance Release Peace dollars for $250.
Reminds me of a modern day max headroom, with multiplicity disorder.
Also the monster truck ticket guy. You know, you’ll pay for the whole seat, but you’ll just use the edge. (Even in standing room only section) in that his pitch, you won’t need to use your entire credit card, just the last 16 or so digits (card dependent)
I wouldn’t say it’s tarnished. I think they prefer the term toned
I bought one each of Morgan and Peace…. Both looked flawless. Maybe i lucked out.
Same with mine (bought one each) and they look flawless (maybe not a 70, but I wasn’t worried about that. Sorry to hear if others received coins that were scratched, etc.
I feel fine.
Someone said “the unaccounted for thousands”. The US MINT and other hold back a few thousand for returns/exchanges. If in 14 days or so (the mint has a 7 day return policy) they see not many returns/replacements, then they will release the rest.
They must discount or at least tell you if you got a coin that was returned right. Because as soon as opened it isn’t new. Just because you didn’t roar when you took battlecat out the new box doesn’t mean you weren’t playing with it. Seems returned coins for defect shouldn’t be considered new. And price adjust according. Next week will show the updated counts but not how many returns. It would show difference in new sales and returns combined to be factored in. My guess is the coins shipped on 10th so the advanced sales would have until 13th… Read more »
Is it like most federal or state government rules? What I mean is, your taxes aren’t late as long as you file by midnight on April 15th, we may not open it until December because we know who usually owes and who gets refunds, so we try to open the owed column last to charge late fees or interest. But as long as the post mark shows before midnight you are considered on time. Now cut off notices are different as in they say must be paid by say the 20th. You mail midnight of the 20th, and if they… Read more »
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what causes the spotting on newly minted coins?
Scratches and dings have obvious causes but the spots seem to be from some sort of contaminant that may not be apparent until after the coins have gone through QC.
Seems like something the Mint could eliminate if they new the cause/source. I have a lot of circulated classic silver coins and have not seen this sort of problem. Maybe it is unique to pure silver.
I wonder if the encapsulation process in some way has an impact. I’ve never seen this on my silver bullion and I have a lot of them. I’ve only seen it on encapsulated coins. Of course encapsulated coins also have a different finish than bullion coins so it could be a planchet problem.
You tube has several mint stamping videos of the process. Some from the mint itself
Perhaps a lubricant or coating on the die, or Perhaps the bar wasn’t 99.99 silver and evenly distributed before cut into blanks.
I saw a Mint video on Youtube about making proof coins that said after the annealing and rimming process the planchets form oxidation so they are washed with soapy water and chemicals and burnished before pressing. Sounds like multiple places the spotting could occur.
I usually wash with soapy water before my rimming, but that’s because they usually wanna kiss and cuddle after.
Yes, they are nice. My collecting of Canadian coins started when I got a 1937. in my change. I noticed the period after the 7 and thought it was a rarity. Turns out, all the five cents that year have a period after the seven. It’s the oldest dated coin I found when i lived there in the ’70s. I have some others but the dates are worn off, like the buffalo nickels and standing liberty quarters my dad gave me as a kid. I only collected the Canadian cents (1937 – 1977) and the WWII five cents (1943 –… Read more »
I didn’t find such a coin, even in Canada, and I lived in Montreal. When I lived there, silver 10 and 25 coins were still circulating and I kept all the ones of King George VI and turned in the newer ones as silver bullion to a dealer for money to buy other coins. I still have the coins I saved to this day, since they probably aren’t going to be bought by anyone, this side of the border. Now I live closer to Mexico. I have some Mexican, no longer legal tender coins, and they’re just nice to have.
I have coins from Peru Argentina chile Brazil Ireland Iraq (paper money with saddam on it too) places that I’ve traveled or deployed to. Might try to get more Peruvian silver. Sells pretty cheap.
Most of the coins I used to collect were from a different mint I think. I am pretty sure it was ancient Latin inscription (maybe ancient Aramaic as the obverse had initials on it). Something to the effect of One Day Sober. And AA on the obverse. But it could also be British or UK as it is commonly referred to as a chip and not a coin or medal.
Large mintage #$…..$ for mint no aftermarket really with 1M+ in the pipeline, buy the classics
Well. At the time, those old coins also fresh from the mint.
WTF, weird, looks cast almost…..I’d return and use the $ to buy a classic Morgan slabbed 65 u can easily get,a,common date…
Production at the Philadelphia Mint of Uncirculated 2023-P Peace dollars included 200 coins struck July 10 by U.S. Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson and packaged with certificates of authenticity and “Congratulations” cards announcing the special strike.
So ya gotta send unopened in brown box or you can’t get designation. Since ya gotta submit through the nifty 19 or hateful 18 or whatever, wonder if they slip the graders a couple hundred bucks to grade that coin sent by individual as found in the scalpers hoard and swap out a regular coin to return to the individual
Interesting point by Dazed. As trust in society collapses, speculation about what goes on behind the curtain causes a concern for all. Someday, OGP coins may be valued more than graded coins as the integrity in third party graders has been diminished. Or maybe graded coins pre 2010 are still considered honest grades while everything graded post that are suspect.
Major D, Agree!! If I am going to shell out serious money on an old coin, I’ll want it graded so as not to pick up a cleaned or counterfeit coin. But new mint products, OGP is the best. Such as the Apollo 11 coins that had great extra material packed with it. Or the St. gold high relief from years ago.
It isn’t just that, but people can’t accept their side is also wrong. Prime example. But Hillary. Destroyed evidence, even if innocent looks like what criminal would do. Then trump for docs and insurrection and rioting, blame Jr and kushner for being related to trump and doing dirty deeds. Insinuate Russian dealings. But biden can’t be guilty too. No way. Trump is guilty so we can’t be. They all can for justice, but when their team gets under the lights they cry foul. You or I in jail for tax evasion or buying gun with a felony. I think we all start off good. Intend to do good. Lift each other up. Then we encounter others and they mess us all up and jade our expectations. What is clear, is that divide and conquer seems the norm, but their math sucks. 8 billion even divided 100 ways still leaves large numbers in each group. And even those groups agree on the enemy of my enemy, and strength in numbers philosophy. Even 160 years later, some want or demand or deserve payback or to be made whole. About 75 years ago, those differences cast aside and they wanted… Read more »
I’m disappointed in the quality of the 2023 Morgans. Having enrolled and bought 3&3, 2&2 were returned. My pet peeve has long been scratches and skuff marks on Morgan Liberty’s cheek. Although the 23Morgs were not as damaged as many classic Morgs seem to be, the surface blems and fine scratches were also apparent on the rim into the field. I also had fine red fibers on the reverse trapped inside the capsules. Peace was better with less blemishes but side by side the pressing was obviously lighter and less detailed on two of them. Fine, almost razor-like cuts on… Read more »
I don’t know about obvious blems. I expect the technology of modern metals manufacturing to eliminate processing flaw like strange red fibers and handling scars and scratches to be reduced or eliminated knowing the customers are expecting better. I don”t buy cars, clothing, appliances, or any product in defective condition. Your point of “not for sale” is understood but don’t ask me to pay for MS70 and get MS63. Sloppy shop work is avoidable, especially when coins are highly automated in their manufacturing. So I buy several and return the ragged. Modern skill-focused metal fabrication is advanced enough to never… Read more »
Hi CoinNews. So do Y’all plan on doing any story/post on the Quality issues with both the Uncirculated versions of the 2023 Morgan/Peace Dollars from the US Mint??? I’ve seen numerous comments and posts from collectors that have had issues with both. I returned 33% of both of my subscription orders due to dents/dings/defects and red hairs/lint. I could have returned even more, but wanted to keep at least 2 of each. This is ridiculous. The mint had extra time to get these right for taxpayers and collectors. I’m very disheartened and am thinking of reducing/canceling my future subscription orders… Read more »
Hi Benjamin G, The few times I have appealed to the people who run this site, I was never answered, so I expect the same for you. You are doing all you can by voicing your opinion here and reducing or cancelling your subscriptions. If enough of us do that, perhaps the Mint will wake up. Unfortunately, it looks like so far they just keep raising their prices to offset the people cancelling or reducing their subscriptions. I did the same in 2019, I am down to 1 coin each subscription instead of multiple coins. I am also less likely… Read more »
Jeff- Given that collector/numismatic production is probably less than 5% of Mint operations, it’s no surprise to me that the collector part of the market gets short shrift. 95% or more of Mint production is making coins for circulation. And, yes, absolutely, the Director is a political appointee. Always has been, always will be, since it’s not an elected position. That said, I’m voting with my wallet, as many others here seem ready to do. I went through the 2021 Morgan/Peace dollar fiasco; got locked out of the D & S coins. Finally got a few of the P Morgans… Read more »
Jeff,
Im right there with ya. I ditched the ASE this year with the exception of the “s” mint. So far i have managed 1 each of the new morgans and peace including 2021issues…. a series i have MUCH more affection for as a collector. For me the ASE has kinda run its course…it was fun. The ONLY other coins im getting from mint this year is 1 silver proof set. I have not been thrilled with the mints packaging of these coins…..skimpy…i miss the actual cases especially with the price hikes. The more they hike the less i buy.
