It should be the most exciting month this year for many coin collectors with releases like the proof Morgan and Peace silver dollars, the newly designed American Liberty gold and silver products, the Jovita Idar quarter, the Mississippi Innovation dollar, and the 2023 Silver Proof Set.

Aug. 8: U.S. Navy Bronze Medal

The U.S. Mint’s first release of the month happens on the 8th, and it’s the U.S. Navy Bronze medal for $20. This is the bronze version of the Navy silver medals issued as a part of an Armed Forces series that honors all six branches of the U.S. military.

The Mint’s silver medal program comprises a 2.5-ounce and a 1-ounce silver medal for each branch. These are followed by companion bronze medals. The Navy 2.5- and 1-ounce silver medals debuted on March 11, 2022, and July 17, 2023, respectively.

Aug. 9: 2023-S Proof Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars

The highly anticipated proof editions of the Morgan and Peace silver dollars debut on the 9th for $80 apiece, with 400,000 available for each. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, these coins will sell out as the designs are highly desirable in proof finish.

Last month, the uncirculated versions sold out, with mintages of 275,000 apiece.

Aug. 10: 2023 American Liberty Gold Coin and Silver Medal

The American Liberty 2023-dated 1-ounce, .9999 fine gold coin and .999 fine silver medal will launch on Aug. 10. The price of the gold piece will be revealed on the 9th, based on the prevailing price of gold, while the silver medal is $82. (Read an earlier article about the pair.)

Both are in proof finish, and the gold coin has the extra desirability of being in high relief. They each also have relatively low mintages, with the gold coin at 12,500 and the silver medal at 75,000.

Issued with new designs as part of the U.S. Mint’s American Liberty series of gold coins and silver medals, which celebrates modern interpretations of the concept of American Liberty, the pair’s obverse features a bristlecone pine, a species native to California, Nevada, and Utah, thought to be the oldest living organisms on Earth. Their reverse showcases a young bald eagle standing on a rocky outcropping moments before taking flight.

Aug. 14: Andrew Johnson Presidential Silver Medal

The Andrew Johnson Presidential Silver Medal recognizes the 17th President of the United States, and will be available on the 14th for $75.

Minted in an ounce of .999 fine silver, the medal has no mintage limits or sales deadlines, exactly like past program issues that are still available.

Thus far, sales have ranged from 11,881 for the James Buchanan Presidential Silver Medal, released earlier this year, to 34,632 for the George Washington Presidential Silver Medal which went on sale in 2018.

Aug. 15: 2023 Jovita Idar Quarters

On Aug. 15, the Mint will introduce the circulating quality 2023 Jovita Idar quarter. It’s the latest addition to the U.S. Mint’s ongoing American Women Quarters™ program, which began in 2022 and aims to recognize the remarkable contributions of women to American history, with five new designs being released each year until 2025.

400k morgan and peace. Seems like a lot. Apparently they finally sold out of the uncirculated ones, though the sales updates didn’t indicate that. And I guess it costs $6 more than the uncirculated since you gotta press the button twice to smash the coin. Navy bronze medal, pass. American liberty. Gold too expensive and the other is a medal and not a coin. Plus $82 is what, worth $8 more than morgan or peace because only roughly 5% of mintage. Weird how silver price already nailed down, but gild will be given day of sale. Thought they went up… Read more »

Tom

It could be the uncirculated totals are less on the coins due to returns.
As for the proofs, suddenly, magically the subscriptions indicate there are now over 25,000 available.

Antonio

The Mint is compensating for the silver proofs promised last year and then reneged on.

Jon Mase

Guess you would pass on the Navy medal. Especially if you haven’t served in the Military. Glad you have no interest in it. Leaves it for someone who Does appreciate our Military and those who serve our country.

Educate a woman, educate a family. Now not historically accurate, but most oldie tv shows and movies women were teachers. Even way back in the little house on the prarie days. Apple for teacher blah blah blah. So who taught them? Musta snuck off with their doctors without borders husbands and got teaching degrees at middle eastern university. Them steamboat back to America in time to teach kids while their sons fought war, then played nurse and volunteer for red cross in their spare time from making dinner, filling the oil lamps, cleaning the home, sewing holes in clothes, crocheting… Read more »

your comments on kids/teaching etc reminds me of a Star Trek. remembering that the original series was taking place sometime around 2250 the following comments from one of the shows make no sense KIRK: Then he was a very strange small boy. One the other hand, he was probably doing things comparable to the same mischievous pranks you played when you were a boy. SPOCK: Mischievous pranks, Captain? KIRK: Yes. Dipping little girls’ curls in inkwells. Stealing apples from the neighbors’ trees. Tying cans on (He’s stopped by the look of horrified incredulity on Spock’s face.) Kirk refers to dipping… Read more »

I think my grand parents had inkwells. I doubt my parents and aunts and uncles did and they went back to the 1920s. Ah the days of Wheatie cents, Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters, Walking Liberty halfs, Peace dollars and forget gold. Who could afford them? But I digress.

Antonio

Mr. Cautier.

Rooster

Looking forward to these proof Morgans & Peace dollars. Going to be a fun month.

East Coast Guru

I have 3 proofs each ordered. I am thinking of dropping it down to one each and use the savings for something else. Perhaps a ASE-S, Liberty medal, or who knows what. not sure I need 3 each. One good one of each should be enough.

Rooster

ECG I was subscribed to 14 of each but also pared back.

Rooster

Lol. My favorite designs. And in proof.

East Coast Guru

Major D. I agree, that’s why I bought 3 each of the 2021 Morgan peace thinking there will be a demand later. I don’t see it with the 2023’s unless it’s the reverse proof. Maybe. Dropped my subscription down to 1 each on the proofs. Still have my 5 reverse proof subscription. I may drop those down closer we get to issue date. But for now, looking to spend elsewhere or nothing at all and keep my powder dry for a coin show.

Rooster

3 coin limit on the American liberty gold.

Rooster

Indeed. I am considering 1. This will probably price around $3k.

Frankie Fontaine

I refuse to subscribe, so I will still try for the proofs. But, if I don’t get it, no biggie,I already dumped the mint basically. Been at it since I was a kid in the late 60s, seen it all, used to be a decent buy, now NO

Antonio

There are always pennies from your pocket change.

Antonio

I have an Ike collection from the mint (uncirculated, proof, uncirculated silver, proof silver, bicentennial uncirculated and proof silver). Pretty heavy.
