Proof Morgans, reverse proof Morgans, S and W mint proof Eagles Innovation Dollars, women nobody ever heard of quarters, this series of medals, that series of medals its endless. The mint’s prices have gone crazy, $130 for the silver proof set and another $24 for the Innovation Dollars proof set. What are 1973 Bahamas proof sets worth today? About the same as all the junk the US Mint is putting out today will be worth in 50 (or a lot fewer) years.
With most 1982 through 1994 proof sets hovering around $3 and 1995 through 2006 ranging from $5 to $7, I’m not going to get excited about proof sets. And that’s what dealers wholesale them for, take a couple sets in and it will be even less. I just paid $40 each for a batch of 2009 silver sets that contains $34 in silver and $5 in face value dollars. That means I was getting the 4 proof copper pennies and nickel for $1. 60 years ago there was nothing out there but worn out Barber and Walker, along with Buffalo… Read more »
Major,
How many kids do you know that are collecting coins from the mint. or even know we have a mint? I’m not a gambling man, but I’d be very confident in taking the ‘death throes’ side of the bet. Of course, like you, I won’t be around in another 50 years (I’d be happy with another 25-30 years)…Lol!
Today’s kids are collecting the invisible gold and silver coins. I think they call em digital currencies. Like the gold bitcoin or the silver etherium. And the Gen before them started diverging to buying the paper golf and not physical. And there’s the rub. Paper gold is worthless when you can’t exchange it for physical (sold 100 to 1 or some estimate like that) except when the power goes out you can burn it for heat or as toilet paper in case covid 23 or 24 pops up. Gold on the other hand is presumed valuable but won’t serve a… Read more »
Good read, Dazed. The mint sure has gone ‘woke’ in the last few years and I’m curious to see if the ‘Bud lite experiment’ affects their bottom line as well. It doesn’t matter to me what image they mint on a coin as I’ll only buy what I like. I was a bit surprised the 2017 Liberty gold coin was such a flop. I thought it would be a hit with black collectors but I guess there aren’t that many black collectors interested in buying expensive gold coins. As for me, I gravitate to the classic designs on coinage. I… Read more »
Hi Craig, Everything goes in cycles, I am sure they will go back to “sleep ” soon enough. I do not think there are many Black collectors that can afford Gold coins. For example, from EarthWeb “HOW MANY BLACK MILLIONAIRES IN AMERICA ARE THERE IN 2023?” July 20, 2023: Among millionaires, Blacks make up 8.8%, Whites 76%. Do you thinks Black are the majority of any of the income levels except the lowest ones? I don’t. Already being a minority, that means there was not a broad base of Black customers to start with. Maybe the Mint was actually hoping… Read more »
The silver proof set sells for $130 and contains 1.3 ounces of silver, at $23 that’s $32. Ignoring the non silver coins that’s a 306% markup. The quarters set sells for $80, that’s a 281% markup over the $21 silver content.
Yes, but they’re beautiful in proof and silver. I prefer them over the copper nickel clad. Maybe one day they’ll sell for more than paid for them from the Mint. Just adding to my retirement. Everything helps. I enjoy them while I have them.
I agree Antonio.
That difference being the extra steps involved in manufacturing proof coins over bullion ones.
Few mint sets from 1971 to 2011 sell for more than pennies over FV. The 1973 set, the only way to get the P and D Ikes, still is under $10, a poor return after 50 years on the $6 issue price. The 1981 with the 3 exclusive SBAs sells for within $2 of FV, well under the $11 issue price. I have obtained the 1987 mint set with the exclusive P and D Kennedy halves for $2, or 18 cents over FV. The 2009 mint set is the biggest disappointment, with the satin finish, 6 quarters and the 4… Read more »
There are always exceptions especially over a several decade run. Like Morgan and peace. Some years not made, others made en mass. some coins alternate metals used or only way to get a coin is by sets. Even magic mike says on his show he’s cracked many many many sets just for the rare, exclusive coin. But the norm is the sets rarely have a ROI. Why the mint thinks that adding a cardboard with a few words make them worth almost double what they were asking just a few years ago is a great idea is beyond me. Why… Read more »
I may mistaken, Dazed and Coinfused but I think this may be the first time I recall seeing you make a comment here without any partisan political digs included. Was that an accident? That was a joke, just to clarify.
Craigslist listing in my area shows lot of ase for $35. With silver around $22 spot. I didn’t buy many silver offerings this year, but I think they were $72 to $82 and not full ounce for some of the coins. 400% is close based on spot, 300% over the $35 is $105. So depends on the metric I guess. But raw materials are usually cheaper than refined products such as jewelry or coins. I got the verify mail from mint so I guess my order for 2 limited sets will be sent shortly. Wondering if I should reduce to… Read more »
Perhaps I spoke to soon. I see the one of yours I just commented on was from 2 days ago, this one says 1, but I know the timestamp is not very precise. I hope you didn’t add more partisan political comments to this one because I did not comment to your first one by the time you generated this one. Anyway, let me ask you about this one: “I got the verify mail from mint so I guess my order for 2 limited sets will be sent shortly. Wondering if I should reduce to just 1. Since it’s first… Read more »
HI Dazed and Coinfused, Nice Post. I don’t agree with everything with you said, but this was well put together. You are still slipping in a few potentially inflammatory comments but this is light years better than your older ones. Thanks! Let me ask you about this paragraph: “With current inflation, economy, threat of war on at least 4 fronts (Russia, China, N Korea, and Hamas) the 200+% markup on most silver offerings is abysmal. Especially with coins not being 99.99 or 99.95 pure and a full ounce. Bars and rounds will probably be more preferential as time moves on,… Read more »
My 15 year old nephew has no idea what a silver dollar is, and may not know what silver is. When I gave him a Baseball Hall of Fame silver dollar, he scoffed and said its worth 2 dollars. With the national debt surging past $33 trillion and the 2024 deficit headed toward $2 trillion, today’s kids will learn the value of Silver and gold the hard way.
Ford retracted billion to advance their EV program. Toyota said EV aren’t feasible for quite some time. Honda and chevy have cut their goals of production from 2 million ev to 500k. While it may be a good idea to go green, you gotta have the tech and infrastructure. We’re currently diving into the pool without checking to see if there is water. If you are 97 congrats, and also my condolences as you have seen America in the Golden age turn to crap in the modern age. My mentor was a greatest generation member. I am one of those… Read more »

With ev taking back burner, silver platinum etc will go back into a higher demand as more ICE vehicles are made til the car companies can reap larger profits. Which after Ford giving uaw such a huge boost in pay will be a while. Plus rockets and missiles and drones use lot of metals for the computer aspect.
Speaking of points, you just made a “point” I have been telling you for a couple of months now, Dazed and Coinfused. The conversation was about why kids are not collecting coins, with a side mention of housing. What do EVs/ICE vehicles and the precious metals have to do with why kids are not collecting coins? It could have an effect in the future, if/as prices go up again, but it does not explain why they are not collecting now. Then you bring up 97 year olds. I am again not getting the connection to kids not collecting coins or… Read more »
Hi Craig, I tend to agree with you. Death throes. Will we even be using and minting physical coins to collect in 50 more years? It might all be digital currency by then. The government might eventually offer us a small premium to our digital accounts for turning in our physical coins. I won’t be here in 50 years either. At my age and income level, even 25-30 more years would be surprising to me. Last time I saw a doctor was for an employment physical in 1997 and last time I had health care was 2007. As far as… Read more »
Hi Kaiser Wilhelm,
Do you read Archeology magazine (archeology.org) by any chance? I think it is great. Something they do that few other magazines do is include a map with each article showing where exactly the area is that they are talking about. If you do not know of it already, I think you would like it.
I got one of each Morgan/Peace dollar offered so far from the mint. With between 275K and 400K minted, which offering is considered ‘more popular’ is a moot point for me. I want to collect all of the M/P dollars the mint produces. I don’t think they are going to do much in the secondary market (might even lose value) so I’ll be buying just one of each to have a complete collection. I did like it much better in 2021 when one had to scramble, and have a bit of luck on your side, to acquire the coins. That… Read more »
Kaiser,
Never been and never will be a flipper. It is funny how terminology changes over time as the only flipper I was aware of was a certain dolphin on a show during my youth. BTW, I just received my email from the mint to verify my info for the upcoming Morgan/Peace RP Set. They’ll be here before long!
I too went to the New York World’s Fair with my mom, but I believe I went in ’65. Enjoyed a nice tour of New York, still remember Rockefeller Center with the impressive water fountain. The New York subway, I still have a token my mom gave me. I don’t remember when I started watching Flipper, maybe about the same time The Time Tunnel and Lost In Space. That tacky theme music, still in my head.
Hi Craig, I also want to collect all of them (in proof), with a caveat. I do not really like the scramble because of that. I also got all the ones I wanted in 2021. I didn’t want the fake O and CC ones, actually minted in Philadelphia. I just thought that was a money grab so I couldn’t support it. If the mint had done the same in 1921 (the only old Morgan’s I own), I would have considered picking them up this time. I cannot afford the markups on the secondary market, so if I wouldn’t have scored… Read more »
Hi Major D,
Seems to me the way to tell which is actually more popular would be to see which reached 275000 first. Not sure if the Mint shares that info. The Mint obviously believed the proof would be more popular. I still think the Mint should base mintages on subscriptions received plus a small percentage more.
