Two figures from the U.S. Mint’s latest sales report stand out: the starting total for the just-released reverse proof set of 2023 American Innovation Dollars and the reduced total of the recently issued reverse proof set of 2023 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars.
Released Nov. 14 for $28, the reverse proof set of dollars celebrating innovations from Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, and Mississippi opened with six-day sales of 33,467, which represents 60.8% of the possible 55,044 sets, making it the Mint’s best weekly seller. This initial sales start, however, is the slowest in the product line to date.
Last year’s set debuted with sales of 39,327, while the one for 2021 opened with sales of 38,056. Still available, last year’s set has registered a weekly sales increase of 3 and now stands at 49,473. It may not be sold for long, given its 50,000-limit. The set for 2021 was also limited to 50,000 and is no longer available, with its last reported sales of 49,541.
In 2019 and 2020, reverse proof dollars were launched individually. Excluding the reverse proof 2020 Maryland dollar, they are still available for $11.50 each, with sales ranging from 41,058 to 70,319. The reverse proofs from 2019 each have mintages of 75,000, while those from 2020 are limited to 50,000 each.
Sales Retreat for 2023 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollar Reverse Proof Set
Meanwhile, the two-coin set featuring a 2023-S Reverse Proof Morgan Silver Dollar and a 2023-S Reverse Proof Peace Silver Dollar saw its sales total drop by 14,195 to 206,117 sets. Released Nov. 9 for $185 and limited to 250,000, the set lasted for about 24 hours before becoming unavailable. It has remained unavailable.
The U.S. Mint also offered the set within its Authorized Bulk Purchase Program, allocating up to 10% of the set’s mintage for the program. The Mint has not reported how many sets were sold to bulk buyers.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 368 numismatic products.
Among these products, 35 outperformed their sales from the previous week, compared to 69 in the prior report. Excluding the new set, 4 products experienced an increase of more than 1,000 units, whereas only 6 did in the previous report.
Meanwhile, 8 products experienced a decline in weekly sales, compared to 2 in the prior report. The only product to show a significant reduction was the already mentioned reverse proof set of 2023-S Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars.

Yep, 14,000 Morgan & Peace Reverse sets returned. Guess some folks weren’t pleased w/the quality? Or the bulk buyers didn’t have 70 but only 69 or below quality sets.
Actually, the 14,000 is a minimum return number. the totals for this past week included might include 10,000 bought and 26,000 returned for a net return figure of 14,000. my understanding the Mint does not resell returned sets, so one really won’t know until a few weeks from now when the weekly sales figure change minimally.
by the way, I bought 2 sets, and maybe they would only be graded a 69 by the ‘experts’, but darned if I think they are as fine as set as you could get.

I have no idea what the Mint does with returned items. I’m sure they review and inspect them following the return. Guess we’ll see shortly if there’s an extra 14,000+ available on the Mint’s website.

There were numerous reports of quality issues with the RP coins.Im general, a lot of buyers have little patience for the Mint s lack of true quality control and won’t shy from returning….. Or big boys guaranteed 70’s dump the ☠️
QC probably diversity or quota hire, not qualified for the job, no education on the subject, blind in both eyes. Only a few million actually qualified, educated, and trained to do the job ahead of them, but you know… ancestors and colonialism and more white man bad.

Since US Mint Director Ventris Gibson’s signature is featured so prominently at the bottom of the COA, doesn’t it seem to reason, she signed off on the COA, via internal e-mail prior to going to press? How in the heck does a US Mint MEDAL, get produced or into production, produced, shipped to fulfillment then to customers, packaged and labeled as a COIN, as well as Legal Tender??? CaliSkier, Good points for sure! Notice that U.S. Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson did not sign the letter sent to customers with the corrected COA – nobody at the Mint signed it! Typical, pass the blame on to lower employees & not take personal ownership of a major error that cost the Mint at least $30,000 in postage (63 cents per letter sent out, plus the mailing envelope & letter paper/ink & new, corrected embossed glossy COA printing costs, & probably cost them more to correct a glaring error of numismatic terminology. Dazed, Judging by the coins I’ve received from the Mint over these last few years, I can honestly say the quality of the coins, at least for me, appear to be as advertised. I haven’t had to send a single one back because of defects. Is it possible they are hand picking out some of their finest specimens, just for me, because I’m such a good customer? And… Perhaps the Mints own website contributed to the confusion of the American Liberty Coin COA and Legal Tender vs Medal for 2023? What is the program labeled or listed as on the website? I was going to check to see what the sales figures are showing for the 2023 Morgan & Peace Reverse Proof Sets but I don’t see them listed on the cumulative sales figures page. After entering 23xs in search I was able to find it but otherwise I don’t see it just looking down the column of different coins? Kinda odd. Graded examples aren’t bringing much so I can see why people would cancel or return them. It’s also odd that it’s showing as unavailable when the sales are only 206,000 or so on a supposed 250,000 mintage.
