Two thoughts: 1) the mintage of the Liberty & Britannia gold drops another 10 coins and 2) it really bugs me that pre-2024 coins are still for sale from the Mint.
REB #2 Agreed totally, Not that I bought any, but the 2023 Morgan & Peace Dollars are now out of control Mintage wise, particularly the Proofs. Why? Because people whined in 2021–So what did the Mint do? They caved and increased Mintages, and let the Bulk big boys in on the action to boot(if I’m not mistaken). Next we’ll hear complaints of too high of Mintages, and bad coins returned from the big boys–a no go for any future upside for many(not to mention more & more Milk Spots it seems). The 2023-W Proof Silver Eagles are worse.. These Numi items… Read more »
Rick, I agree about the 2023-W Proof ASE. That one was particularly baffling to me with a mintage of 560,408 (combined total of 23EA, 23EA040 and 23RF), and it sold out in 42 weeks with that high mintage. Meantime, the 2023-W Unc ASE is still available after 43 weeks with a much lesser mintage of 161,332 so far (23EG + 23EG040); and the 2023-S Proof ASE is still available after 32 weeks (16 weeks for the Ltd Ed set) with a mintage of 232,972 so far (23EM, 23EM040 + 23RC). IMO, the S-Proof is the more desirable/valuable coin over the… Read more »
Hmmm… Excerpt from an article(2017) on WMNB(World Mint News Blog). Rick, E1 and any cent collectors should find this throwback interesting. “2017-P Cent Makes a Big Stir with Zero Marketing Dollars” Does the below excerpt, still ring true, to any of you? “Consider the context. The Mint has been criticized for years for being, or at least appearing to be, out of touch with everyday collectors. Moreover, there’s a growing feeling in numismatics that the tail has begun to wag the dog. At the birth of the hobby, people studied and collected coins that were struck by the Mint in… Read more »
Thanks for the Commemorative mintages and comparisons in the previous thread Major D! Also Reb said previously: “I agree with your take on sports. Maybe the silver football coin could be the first in the shape of a football!” This would be a first for the US Mint, however the Royal Canadian Mint has previously, issued a “Football” shaped coin in 2017. “It’s curved and convex as if inflated and ready for play, complete with all the texture and standardizedfeatures of a modern Canadian football: leather panels, “night stripes” and laces that were once part of the manufacturing process but… Read more »
Interesting stuff, CaliSkier. Thanks for the link.
Good thinking CaliSkier. Except Mint missed out on NFLs 100th anniversary couple years ago which should have been the appropriate time to produce a football coin.
Guess no one from Mint or NFL even thought about producing a coin for the NFLs century mark.
Chris, sorry to do my best attempt at Cliff Clavin….it’s not the sport’s creation date that was honored with commemorative coins but rather the creation date of its hall of fame and museum, which is a non-profit educational institution. With baseball, it was the 75th anniversary in 2014 of the National Baseball HOF; with basketball it was the 60th anniversary in 2020 of the Naismith Memorial Basketball HOF. According to the Mint, the commemorative coin program is about raising money for “organizations and projects that benefit the community” through surcharges on the coins. However, as was posted by Seth Riesling… Read more »
Any Au or Ag Canadian Maple Leaf lovers or collectors out there? Chime in if so, “Homey, has a little story for y’all”!
CaliSkier, I’m not in any way trying to collect the Maple Leaf series, but I have picked up some silver bullion (no gold) and also some of the specialty silver coins that RCM produced, as the article you shared penned “that exist only for the purpose of being collected”. Some of what RCM produces is way over the top for me as I want my coins to be round and unpainted. But I have made exceptions for gold plating and super incuse. For instance, I have the 2023 Five-Cent Pure Silver Coin with the gold-plated beaver + 1947 Maple Leaf Mark; the… Read more »
I should have said “generally unpainted”, as I do have the RCM 2005 and 2006 Tall Ships hologram coins, as well as the RCM’s 2021 100th Anniversary of the Bluenose Special Dime Wrap Collection with the first painted circulation dime. You can call me a sucker for ships. And the US Mint’s painted 2020’s basketball commemoratives, and 2022 painted purple heart commemorative…..
Gosh, the 2024 commemoratives are really not selling strong.
Weak designs, even GG not much to crow about, Again the half is best design. Prices too, way too high….some folk demand, pray for higher & higher price$…. Lower & lower sales, I’ll Ventris turn off the lights whe she leaves ❓
John, I agree with you about the half being the best design. I just received the Mint’s email about the Intro Pricing for GG ending tomorrow March 29 at 3:00 pm EST. I haven’t bought any commemoratives this year because of the prices, so the thought of even greater prices makes it worse. That said, the low mintages so far do make me pause. IDK, perhaps I’ll jump off the fence and buy a couple before the deadline tomorrow?
Nope, I decided to not buy any 2024 commemoratives after all.
Back in the day, the USM would be trying to jack up sales from these pathetic #s
John, my complaint is that the Mint is making way too many products. Perhaps efficiency and pricing could improve across-the-board if they eliminated half of their catalog? If pricing goes down, I believe sales would go up.
I wonder if the Mint lost plenty of customers a few years back when bots ruled the roost. I almost threw in the towel several times when issues sold out in seconds and showed up as confirmed on eBay seconds later. Talk about high prices! Try bidding against a group of other buyers going after the same sold-out coin. I hated having to deal with scalpers, scammers, and flippers. Recent purchases from the Mint have been MUCH more accommodating and peaceful.
REB, that’s exactly the beef I now have with RCM. Many of the low mintage specialty coins, such as the 2024 Super Infuse Maple Leaf, are gone before even released on their web site, and the only place to buy them are on eBay or directly from a dealer at highly inflated prices.
Chris Terp says: “Gosh, the 2024 commemoratives are really not selling strong. “ Well, there isn’t a whole lot of “bang for the buck”, for starters. Here’s a comparison, not a fair, nor apples to apples per se comparison, other than the type of meta(Ag), I’m talking about and category(numismatic). One, today, could purchase 6oz($148.92 spot melt) of Royal Canadian Mint, numismatic reverse proof silver for $174.95. Or, one could purchase 6($127.82 spot melt) US Mint, Harriet Tubman Or Greatest Generation(on 3/30) proof silver $1’s @ $87/proof coin, for $522.00. (Above/below calc. using $24.82 spot price) Another way to look… Read more »
Major D and any others that might consider Maple Leaf coins. Dang, gold at $2,227.60 @ 2:54 MST The spot price on gold has made for some interesting “deals”, if you will. That is, if you are buying anyways, whether, collecting, gathering, accumulating, speculating, stacking, cost averaging or otherwise? One can obtain today, either: 2, Random Year 1/10oz(.20oz) Canadian Gold Maple Leafs @ $248.99/ea($497.98) EBay and 1, Random Year Canadian Silver Maple Leaf $28.01, plus $9.95 shipping (Provident) for, $536.01. (Bullion) Or From GateWest for 527.95, plus $5.00 shipping($532.95) you can get a 2010 Piedfort Reverse Proof Canadian Silver Maple… Read more »
CaliSkier, my first thought is there’s a difference between 1) numismatic collecting/speculating; 2) bullion collecting/speculating; and 3) when bullion is treated like numismatic (or vice versa) and is even graded and slabbed the same. For 1) I’m looking at the coin itself, the design, subjective appeal, denomination, series, year, mint, condition/grade, finish, mintage, composition, rarity, demand, etc. etc (not in any particular order). The price/value has little to do with the actual metal content. For 2) All I care about is the price and how close to spot it is because the resale is going to be based strictly on… Read more »
