Last week, the United States Mint started selling their 5-coin set of silver 2024 quarters honoring Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, Honorable Patsy Takemoto Mink, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Celia Cruz, and Zitkala-Ša.
It was released on April 2 for $80, and it posted 6-day opening sales of 33,792 units, making it the U.S. Mint’s best weekly seller.
For comparison, the set from last year remains available at the same $80 price, and debuted with 5-day sales of 38,782 units. Most recently, it saw a weekly gain of 101 units, bringing the total to 44,954.
Looking back further, the 2022 set opened with sales of 57,735 units, was not available for long, and eventually settled with sales of 57,699 units. This set had advantages such as a lower price of $73 and marked the introduction of silver quarters honoring women, coinciding with the launch of the Mint’s series of American Women quarter dollars.
Elsewhere, Mint data shows many of its silver products enjoyed some extra attention and stronger sales, supported by recent surging prices for silver.

John Q. — You said — Bring on $30 Silver!…Well.?…
Cali, is there a Lone Ranger & Tonto Coin?
Hi-yo Silver, away!!
Hey Rick let’s roll man….as w MarkFL $30 give me$50…uh $40! Gold now getting the mining stop to pop. No more $2,050 62 $20Libs….$2,500!,,
Friday gonna be interesting, An old Uranium stock I bought a decade ago is now a darling on Wall$t Cameco……USM sales kinda weak kids
ZeroHedge has analysts explaining how gold could go to $3000 or $4000. Good for those who want to sell, but not for collectors. Maybe E1 is smart getting into cents and half dollars. If gold is $4000, who can afford the coins? But by then bread may be $20 a loaf and minimum wage $50 an hour!
Cag, he’ll love it, pushing the PF 4-coin Eagle set & PF 1/10 Oz’s, then laughing all the way to the Bank–Saying Bam! But still not a high enough Premium lol.
Talk about parsing the Mint balance sheet..( $ _ $ )…
Wonder what that’s going to $ launch at in around 3 weeks?(4-coin PF set)
Stop on by Cag, rouse up the crowd! Make people go(¬_¬ )…
I forgot about ZeroHedge, back on the click list.
Yes, wow, gold’s over $2400. That’s up almost $600 in about 6 months. And silver’s over $29. Now if it would just go to $40 I’d dump a lot. Or, rather, trade it for gold.
Those “undesirable “ First Spouse coins that were being thrown away at very close to spot are looking pretty doggone good nowadays 🙂
Not as good as my stash of 2006 Au buffaloes which only cost me $800! Of course, if your point is to make the most money from Au, then just buy bars at a reasonable premium. Why in hell would I want to buy a coin with the effigy of a First Lady on it?
Craig, Perhaps, among other things. some, like me, may have more confidence that the “coin” contains what it is/was represented to have ( i.e. gold) as opposed to the “bar”. There have been a lot of “fake au bars”. But, when resources allow it, I still will go with ag over au at the approximate over 80 to 1 current ratio. Of course, such a ratio might be meaningless as history has shown ratio’s of 8 to 1, 16 to 1. 35 to 1, 125 to 1. But now some even believe that the price of ag will exceed the… Read more »
When I started buying silver coins in 2021 it was just under $28/oz with all kinds of talk about how silver was going to keep going up. Some “experts” were even predicting $100 silver. Then it dropped down to $22 just a year later and has hovered around $23 and $24 for much of the time since then- until this upswing. As much as I would love to see silver take off, I think this is just another market hiccup (some would say manipulation)- and it will fall right back to $23-$24. As to the huge ratio, it is a… Read more »
Major D.
When I first started collecting coins silver was about $0.92 an ounce (silver $ a dollar) and gold $35 an ounce (double eagle about $50). If I only had the smarts and $ back in those days.
Agree silver is not 80 times more plentiful than gold. Call it supply and demand and/or pumping and dumping one for the other.
My mentors always said be careful for what you wish for you might just get it and learn that it was not what you wanted after all.
That is sage advice for sure!
Has the First Spouse series ended? I haven’t heard anything about Rosalynn Carter. The mintage for Barbara Bush was terrible; so, I wondered if the Mint just gave up.
REB, Believe the President must expire/die too before the expired spouse is honored with the coin. Jimmy is still hanging in with us. Think the series will continue unless we no longer have a President. Can not see it ending because politics likely would not allow that Not sure what you mean about “Bush terrible mintage”. The mintages were higher than for some others even thou price much higher at mint for Bush. Someday in the future it will be interesting to see how many coins are minted for current day survivors. After all we might like some more and… Read more »
]chuck,
Thanks for the info. I didn’t realize that the Prez had to predecease the spouse. I had thought the Bush total was low. Time for Major D to post mintages of the series. I agree with you, chuck, I’d like to see the program continue indefinitely.
REB, unfortunately that’s a series that I don’t have a good handle on. I found mintages on USA Coin Book, but they combine proof and uncirculated: usacoinbook.com/coins/bullion-coins/first-spouse/
I’m sure there must be better figures somewhere else. As of the Mint’s 4-7-2023 sales report, the Bush Proof (20PB) is 2,967 and the Unc (20PC) is 1,967 for a total of 4,934. Based on USA Coin Book’s numbers, 2014’s Eleanor Roosevelt looks to have the lowest combined total mintage of 4,236; with 2014’s Grace Coolidge close behind at 4,264.
Thanks for the info. I guess the red book would break it down by proof/uncirculated. Anecdotally, the Bush coin seemed pretty low to me. I’m surprised Eleanor Roosevelt would be the lowest mintage. She was frequently like a co-president with possibly the highest profile of any first lady. Grace Coolidge – perfectly understandable that the mintage would be low.
REB, Major D, “Coin World” has had several articles on the “spouses” in recent years. One that has a lot of information is the Coin World .com November 2020 issue which breaks out mintages by proof and unc. However, this information likely will be misleading. Why because many were likely melted especially the early year ones (and Madison). A Coin World article in their November 18, 2019 weekly cites, in part, the mint’s former fulfillment contractor: “mistakenly arranged for the incineration, without metal reclamation, of more than $1million worth of First Spouse gold $10 coins.” These were Dolley Madison per… Read more »
One last thing.
According to the Coin World11/18/2019 article the Mint’s more than $1million worth of coins was compensated
“for the lost claim totaling $1,015,941.87.”
Wonder what we would have/had to paid for these coins? Likely, our premium charges would have been much higher than the premium (if there was one) charged on the claim.
Chuck great info, I remember the destroyed spouse coins story. I carried the conversation over to the new article earlier today. It was not intentional to step on your toes. I have followed the Spouses back in the day, so I spoke about what limited info that I have ‘upstairs’..
Thanks, Chuck. That is some interesting history and story. I did not know that you could incinerate gold and not be able to reclaim it. How is that even possible absent some kind of nuclear reaction? I’ve heard stories (perhaps a tall tale) that the people working with the Ft Knox bricks have to have their clothes tested for gold dust so that nothing leaves, and yet $1 million in gold coins can vanish like that? Pretty amazing if Treasury and Secret Service wasn’t all over that one. It sounds like the plot of a movie, if one hasn’t been… Read more »
Good stuff, chuck. I’ll check out the article. Thanks again.
I suppose Dave SWFL that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder…
Gold is beautiful to most people, regardless of the form that it has been gifted…
I like that Jackie coin for sure.
I’ll take a gift of gold any day, even if slabbed…
First Spouses, First Cousins, doesn’t matter- it’s all good if gold.
Several 1st spouse coins were unique, a Gold Seated Liberty coin, flowing hair, etc. and the price for many was about $490. Loaded up on Jackie’s, none since but missed Eleanor R, she was the price queen, wonder if still true, need a Hrey sheet…..I sell silver many x, gold I don’t like to sell, always been a mistake
Liberty & Britannia is down another two coins. Does the mintage on this coin go below 5,400 when all the dust settles?
You just never know with the Mint’s accounting.
I’m surprised to see there are still some past gold products available at the Mint: 23EL, 23EH, 17XA, 18XF.
18F will be there unti,2044
