Remarkable the 2024-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle was able to top the Mint’s weekly sales list despite this coin having its second slowest start since 2011.
Kaiser, it’s not surprising given there were only 2 Mint releases for the week, the Uncirculated Silver + Uncirculated Gold American Eagles. However, the weaker 2024 sales look to be across-the-board for all of the American Eagles. For instance, the 2024 W-Proof ASE is greatly underperforming vs. the 2023. After 21 weeks, the stand-alone 2024 W-Proof ASE is at 253,620; whereas the 2023 W-Proof was at 335,209 after just 3 days of sales (3-2-2023 sales release to the 3-5-2023 sales report) and at 21 weeks it was at 424,546. So, after 21 weeks, the 2024 is 170,926 sales below the… Read more »
Good point, Major D, about those being the only new releases for the week. Besides, perhaps it isn’t all about declining coin sales but also about rising prices for so many other things. The peoples’ money can only go so far and in so many directions; in times of inflation the kind of discretionary spending that coin purchases represent might just be one of the first places to take a cut.
Not with me Kaiser. I’m spending 30K on replacement windows, 10K on a new patio door, and upgrading my fridge and washer/dryer this year. I’m hoping this year is just an anomaly, with regards to money going out. I’m also not surprised in the least that sales of precious metal coins are down from the mint. Personally, I have to see value in these products and at $76-$80 for an ounce of silver, ‘I’m out’ as they say on Shark Tank! Most of my time is consumed with my source for paying for all these items, the stock market, I… Read more »
Craig,
Copy that. Jensen is the Man.
The Magnificent One.
NVDA = More Money for Coins or a new roof
Cheers
E 1,
Jensen is a true genius and I’m holding his companies shares, not trading them. I’m just hoping he isn’t the one the ‘Terminator’ movies were based on.. Lol. And to think he started out washing dishes at Denny’s! Only in America.
Cheers to you.
As has been stated here before and with good reason, Craig, each to his own, and that’s becoming ever more evident, here on this site and everywhere else out in the big old world. I myself wouldn’t spend $30,000 on a new car much less for replacement windows; all I can say, however, is more power to you. I purchased my sub-compact Toyota Yaris (with crank windows yet) for $16,000 in 2012, have since put fifteen thousand miles on it and plan to make that tough little vehicle last many years more. I totally agree with you regarding the price… Read more »
If the Mint was offering the 2024-W Uncirculated American Gold Eagle for the identical percentage amount over its own current spot price as it is applying to the 2024-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle over that precious metal’s concurrent spot price, the 2024-W Uncirculated American Gold Eagles would be selling for $5,979 each.
Kaiser, I’m having trouble doing the math equivalent. Were you comparing 2024 and 2023, or another year?
In looking at the 2024 W-Unc 1-oz AGE its Mint debut price is $3,170 and current spot is $2,315.64 so it’s selling for $854.36 (36.9%) over spot; whereas the 2023 W-Unc 1-oz AGE had a Mint debut price of $2,670 and spot at the time was $1,960.75 making the sales price $709.25 (36.2%) over spot. It looks awfully close to me over one year’s time.
Major D,
I think I see where the discrepancy is. I was comparing those relative factors in regard to the 2024-W AGE and 2024-W ASE and not two years of the AGE by itself.
Kaiser, yes- my bad! You did indeed explain it right, but it was late at night, and I should have stopped right there. Yes, the ASE is priced at 155% over the spot price of silver. Another way of looking at it is if the ASE was priced at the same percent over spot as the AGE, the ASE W-Unc should debut at $41.
No problem whatsoever, Major D. In fact, not only do I like your “amended” version of that comparison better than my own but I’m also thrilled by the alternative suggestion you came up with. After all, a $41 2024-W Unc ASE is a heck of a lot better deal than a $5,979 2024-W Unc AGE, at least for my money!
I’ve come to believe the reason silver isn’t sold for ten times its current price is that the monetary powers that be must think it is economically prudent to keep at least one of the precious metals within the reach of the more financially limited citizen.
Sorry to disagree Kaiser, but I think that is the least concern of the moneyed interests that control this commodity.
And here I thought, Major D, I had finally pulled the curtain on The Big Bankers!

I love these charts. Keep ’em coming, Major D. The Mint better have a brisk-selling Christmas season to save the ’24 releases from humiliation. I wonder if the lack of a 2023 commem had any effect on sales this year? Did collectors simply get out of the habit of buying them?
The funny thing, REB, is that one could alternatively think the opposite might have been true, that since no commemmoratives were available last year it would seem there ought to have been at least some degree of pent-up demand for them, but as we can see by the numbers that didn’t turn out to be the case.
REB, I think Mint sales are down across-the-board due to a belt-tightening that’s occurring throughout US retail sales in general. Sales of the ASE W-proof are down almost 60% from last year’s sales so far. But I also think that the introduction of the Morgan and Peace dollars as annual sets is likely cannibalizing sales from the commemorative silver dollars and ASEs especially. And if you’re on a (Mint) budget, perhaps decisions are made as to where to allocate the green dollars for silver dollars?
The Morgan and Peace are at least related to classic series. The fact that many of the commemorative issues are on topics that leave some collectors somewhere between apathetic and alienated does nothing to help sales.
✔️…
And the lower the Mintage the better for those who buy them, regardless of their initial intentions in the first place. First Spouse Gold comes to mind at the moment. True, the Spouse’s are not technically a Commem, but my greater point is stated…
Who knows Rick, Jackie Robinson bu was king, until it was melt. Chasing low mintage wonders is fine but tough whe you pay through the nose
Major D,
What I have to say about all of that is BINGO!
Kaiser, what can I say other than great minds think alike! LOL. I received my complimentary 2 sets each of the AWQ coin boards today. Thanks again for the tip!
You’re most welcome, Major D. It is indeed my great pleasure to have pointed you to those AWQ coin holders and I’m glad you’ve already received them! As to the “great minds” category, I’ll be sure to check with my wife (of 32 years) to ascertain if I qualify for that; who else would know better?
To Rick, AKBob and any others suffering through the PCGS grading dilemmas, that they continue to present you with, I truly feel your pain, re: the predicaments outlined. I know, I for sure would have an issue keeping my blood pressure and tone of voice in check! LOL They have compromised the trust bestowed by many, many, many; collectors assuredly. The stories and real life examples you’ve both provided, are maddening to say the least. For the amount of money, exchanging hands, either pay, qualified employees more money, hire more people to handle the hiccups and or, be completely forthright,… Read more »
Cali,
Agreed on all points, and thanks for the article. I did know that ANACS(ANA)has been around a long time.
I’ll read the article next up, but first I had a comment for AK Q’d up that I will post now so I don’t lose it.
Talk later
CaliSkier,
Your inclusive 365 degree view/description of both the normal expectations and the unfortunate realities of current grading and encapsulating services by PCGS ought to function as a very complete yet compact tutorial for those finding themselves mired one way or another in this currently confusing, convoluted and murky operation.
Kaiser Wilhelm said in the previous thread re: the 2023 “Extra V” cent: Rick, Why in heaven’s name would having the Obverse of the Lincoln Cent, the side that this is all about because it is the one with the extra V on it, facing forward on the label side of the slab not make any sense to the PCGS encapsulators?” Exactly and beyond appropriate question Sir Kaiser! SMH Seems like a no brainer? Guess not? Then again, maybe it(Obverse or Reverse) is or can be attributed to a no brainer? Ponder…
If the recent sloppy shenanigans at PCGS continue to go about their merry way, CaliSkier, even the poor Scarecrow will be considered over-qualified to work there.
Major D said in previous thread: “This is intriguing, The Royal Mint just released a new commemorative in silver and gold, designed by John M. Mercanti (of US Mint fame) called The Lion and The Eagle.” In case you or others maybe missed the news in November 2023, here is the Press Release from the Royal Mint in regards to the partnership with previous US Mint Chief Engraver, John Mercanti. “The Royal Mint Launches British Lion and American Eagle Commemorative Coin” (2023 First year of issue) https://www.royalmint.com/aboutus/press-centre/the-royal-mint-launches-british-lion-and-american-eagle-commemorative-coin/#:~:text=27th%20November%202023%3A,design%20with%20British%20minting%20excellence. Thanks for the info. I’m late to the party. Per the Royal Mint: first seen in 2023, it has been enhanced (for 2024) with new elements, including a privy mark featuring the Liberty Bell. So, it looks to be an annual offering. I wonder if the Liberty and Brittania will be the same?
Major D,
Also a reverse frosted finish in 2024 which I think is reverse proof.
VinnieC, I have the 2023 Tudor Beasts Bull of Clarance 2-coin proof + frosted reverse proof set. I really like the frosted finish.
AKBob on PCGS, That sounds tough, those mistakes, neglect, and probably many misunderstandings to boot! I feel lucky to have had two relatively minor issues(so far!?)compared to yours! I’d start out with patience, although yours has worn paper thin! You probably already have, but identify every single issue very specifically, line by line, in the order that each submission form reflects. Do it on paper/email, one by one so there is a record of your issues. Obviously there are some miscommunications(and distance)between Isidro & company and the grading dept.(sweat shop lol)… Talking on the phone sometimes doesn’t get very far(but… Read more »
Rick, thanks for the encouraging words! I needed that. I appreciate the others here that have commented on my adventure with PCGS. Rick, I still haven’t received my Au Lib/Brit. Did you receive yours yet? I’m getting anxious as I really want to see and hold it in my hand. I was going to start collecting the Morgan/Peace dollars but I’ve decided not to. I had the sets from 2021-Present but I’m selling them. Actually I already sold both of my First Strike and FDOI sets. I’m currently selling the rest off individually. I’m going to stick with Au coins… Read more »
AKBob, Yes, collecting coins has no right or wrong. One can easily be totally satisfied with collecting the Women’s Quarter program coins of today, to the $3 Gold Indian Princess coins of yesteryear, or both! https://davidlawrence.com/inventory/782654 I will say that I don’t think I’ve heard of any coin collector who doesn’t care about an upside. They do. Some just don’t bring it front and center very often, if at all. I know I was, and I would guess that you too were at least in part influenced by the MNB days of old. Which consisted of a lot of flippers,… Read more »

I thank you ALL, here for listening to my venting, whining, etc. I do feel a great deal better as here, you ALL can feel my pain!! Rick, my Au Lib/Brit Coin & my Ag Lib/Brit Medal will be shipped out tomorrow!! I can’t wait to get my hot little hands & eyes on them both!! I’m excited to get them, Finally, lol!!
Well, as always, Good Luck ALL!!!
Rick and AKBob,
It just occurred to me that one of my very favorite parts of being on this coin site is being able to read various people’s (like the two of you, as prime examples) descriptions of the coins they own/owned, they’ve sold or they’ve bought. I do get a good amount of vicarious enjoyment out of that!
Buying these burnished thinking is like buying a NEW car, once you get it subtract 25% in resale value….. collectors ain’t stupid, demand destruction achieved….somewhere a Cag is smirking
Could be the price they’re charging for silver bullion coins? Maybe.
